Rolling with the Punches4
“Whip It” is surprisingly good in spite of itself, conventional as a sports movie yet mature in its development of character. It’s also an entertaining spectacle, which is relief for me since I’ve never given much thought to women’s Roller Derby (or even sports in general, but that’s a topic for another day). Drew Barrymore has done well to hype it as her directorial debut; she proves that she not only has the technical skills, but also the ability to move a story along through dialogue, pacing, and emotion. Having practically grown up in front of the camera, I think it’s safe to assume she knows a thing or two about what a film needs in order for it to work. The first thing she did right was cast Ellen Page, who has repeatedly demonstrated just how versatile an actress she is.

She’s no exception here. She plays seventeen-year-old Bliss Cavendar, who was raised in a middle-of-nowhere Texas town and gets by as a diner waitress. Her overbearing mother, Brooke (Marcia Gay Harden), a product of a very different set of standards, pressures Bliss into competing in beauty pageants, believing you have to make do with what you’ve got when you’re young and attractive. When Bliss is made aware of a Roller Derby match in nearby Austin, she decides to go and see what all the fuss is about. Lo and behold, she likes what she sees. She then meets Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig), a teammate for the Hurl Scouts, and is encouraged to try out for the team. Maggie is one of several teammates that has adopted a clever nickname; some of the other Hurl Scouts are Smashley Simpson (Drew Barrymore), Rosa Sparks (Eve), and the Manson Sisters (Kristen Adolfi and Rachel Piplica).

Under the guise of taking an SAT studies class, Bliss sneaks away to Austin every week for practice. Conflict abounds: Not only have the Hurl Scouts never won a single game, Bliss’ teammates are also unaware that she’s underage (you have to be twenty-one in order to be considered for Roller Derby). By the time she starts participating in matches, she develops a rivalry with Iron Maven (Juliette Lewis), the confrontational leader of undefeated champions of Roller Derby, the Holy Rollers. Nevertheless, Bliss has never felt more alive. At long last, she has found something she loves to do, and she does it with people she enjoys being around. Eventually, she will have to find and maintain that delicate balance between her passion, her family, and her life back home, a process that isn’t as easy as it might seem.

One could see this film just for the satisfaction of watching an uplifting, inspirational sports film, as has been done so many times before. For me, what made this movie so enjoyable were the characters, most so interesting and well developed that they seemed authentic. Bliss, for example, is willful and determined, yet not so haughty that she only seems like a spoiled brat. There’s a remarkably tender side to her, and yes, some of it is reserved for her mother. It would have been easy to write Brooke as a controlling, spiteful stereotype, but all of that is avoided–despite having unrealistic expectations and a dated ideal of successful womanhood, she genuinely cares about her daughter, and we sense that all throughout. The only character who poses a bit of a problem is Bliss’ father, Earl (Daniel Stern), seemingly included just for the sake of physically and morally clashing with his wife.

Other characters function as quirky interludes, like Bliss’ supportive best friend, Pash (Alia Shawkat), the Hurl Scouts’ eccentric coach, Razor (Andrew Wilson), and the boisterous Roller Derby announcer, “Hot Tub” Johnny Rocket (Jimmy Fallon). The screenplay even has room for a teen romance between Bliss and a guitarist named Oliver (Landon Pigg), who eventually swaps his coat for Bliss’ Stryper tee shirt (which she claims is the only cool thing her mother ever gave her). Most of these characters, the last one especially, are expected, as is the inevitable final match between the Hurl Scouts and the Holy Rollers. And yet, it all comes together smoothly, making for a fun and endearing film that you’ll want to see through to the end.

The game sequences are quite effective on their own, not only because of the well choreographed skating maneuvers, but also because of the camerawork; every shot exploits the spectacle that is Roller Derby, gliding in time with the actors as they zoom over and around each other on an inclined track. Other shots reveal the grungy feel of a Roller Derby event, from the makeshift arena to the ramshackle benches to the screaming fans, most of whom look no older than twenty. This is interesting in and of itself, given the fact that, save for Bliss, all the teammates are in their early to late thirties; one of them even has a young son. Knowing these women are mostly in it for the love of the game, one wonders how long Bliss can keep playing right alongside them. But if there is a message attached to “Whip It,” it has nothing to do with what the future may or may not bring; this movie is all about living in the now and loving every minute of it.

Whip it good!4
It’s official: Until further notice, I will happily see any movie featuring Ellen Page. As in previous movies, Page does an outstanding job in bringing her angsty teenage character to life. This time, she’s a slightly lost seventeen year old being herded around by a pageant-passionate mother. The first glimmering that she might have goals of her own comes when she sees roller derby girls dropping off flyers for an upcoming event. Of course, she sneaks out to see it using a pretext transparent to everyone but her parents, and she is transfixed. After the show, she tells one of the skaters, “You guys are my heroes!” The tattooed derby girl answers, “Come to the tryout - be your own hero.” And she does.

The rest follows an inspiring and hilarious season of sneaking around the parents, doing her part to bring the last-place team to the championship. As you might expect, the poo hits the fan when pageant-panicked Mom finds out that her little beauty queen has another life as Babe Ruthless. I found the parent/teen flareups somewhat milder than realistic, but then the rapprochement was unconvincingly minor, too.

But, if that tension had been much tenser, a lot of the movie’s core fun would have been hidden. Barrymore, in her debut role as director, clearly had fun making this and the fun comes through in the final product. The girl-power, be-who-you-are messages come through without shrillness, and Page’s navigation of teen heartbreak leaves her character convincingly in the lead. One scene near the very end, her father with hammer in hand (wait for it) was a bit predictable, but satisfying none the less. As was the whole movie. I don’t always want a movie that takes itself too seriously. When you want a fun bit of fluff with plenty of physical comedy, give this one a shot. It’s well worth the time spent seeing it.

Blu-ray: Enjoyed it more than I expected. Solid PQ, AQ could have been better as well as special features.3
Roller Derby. I can easily remember turning on the television and watching the Los Angeles T-Birds. Personally, I didn’t know if this was a true sport or if it was like wrestling and it was just sports entertainment. But I was hooked. Not sure if it was the blonde women with poofy hair throwing other women out of the rink or that one person who didn’t look should be on the rink, actually kicking butt. Needless to say, that roller derby has had its following for decades and now here we are with a film based on a character who takes part in roller derby competitions.

“Whip It” marks the directorial debut by actress Drew Barrymore (”E.T.”, “50 First Dates”, “The Wedding Singer”, “Charlie’s Angels” films) and is an adaptation of the novel “Derby Girl” by Shauna Cross, a fictionalized book of skating with the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls.

The independent film was released in theaters during the fall of 2009 and now makes its Blu-ray and DVD debut. The Blu-ray edition comes with a second disc which contains a digital copy of the film.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“Whip It” is presented in 1080 High Definition (Widescreen 2:40:1), AVC @ 36 MBPS. The film sports vibrant colors with the Hurl Scouts green outfits, while amber lights shine on the roller derby rink. You can see details in the surroundings, especially injuries ala bloody noses to bruises. Even the tattoos on Kristen Wiig are seen much clearly on HD. Skin tones are natural and blacks are nice and deep. Everything is visible from the freckles of Pash, to the sweat and tears of Bliss and the other girls during competition or the more emotional scenes of the film. I will say that at first, I thought this was a period film shot in the ’80s but you realize that the film focuses on Bliss living in a very small town.

There is a fine amount of grain in the film and I didn’t notice any compression artifacts, banding or any sign of DNR. A solid Blu-ray release in terms of PQ from Fox.

As for the audio, “Whip It” is featured in English 5.1 DTS-HD MA and Spanish, French 5.1 Dolby Digital. The film is front and center channel driven. Dialogue and music are both crystal clear but there is minimal use of surrounds. You can hear crowd ambiance and the women racing on the rink and hitting the side rails and hearing the skates but its not immersive as I would have hoped but still, the film is not all about the roller derby and there are plenty of dialogue scenes and music-driven scenes that are very clear, with some songs having a nice kick of bass. A pretty interesting soundtrack as well from ’80s 38 Special’s “Caught Up in You” to music from the Ramones and the Breeders.

Subtitles are in English SDH and Spanish.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“Whip It” comes with a digital copy of the film and comes with a few special features:

* Deleted Scenes - (16:14) Included is an alternate opening and eight deleted scenes.
* Fox Movie Channel Presents Writer’s Draft: Shauna Cross of “Whip It” - (3:04) A short featurette with an interview with novel and screenwriter Shauna Cross about “Whip It”.
* Whip It Soundtrack Spot - (:32) A promotional for the “Whip It” soundtrack.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“Whip It” may seem like a film about roller derby and the antics that go behind-the-scenes of the sport but truthfully, the film has many layers. From a coming-of-age film, a relationship movie and a girl power film, there are a good number of things going on in this film that there is far much more to enjoy than expected.

I have to admit that Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut definitely shows promise. The actress has starred in so many films since she was a child and has worked with a good number of quality director’s, I had no doubt that she would do a pretty solid job.

Part of the challenge of “Whip It” is bringing together this wild bunch of characters that the character Bliss associates with and then bringing this other side of her life as a teenager from a small town, having an overbearing pageant mother and working at a fast food restaurant while trying to maintain her friendship with her high school friends and then finding love. Definitely not an easy task for Barrymore but one thing she does have is the original author Shauna Cross involved with the screenplay and she has a talented actress in Ellen Page in the main role.

At first glance, I didn’t know if Page can pull of such a role but as she did with “Juno” she manages to pull of Bliss very well for “Whip It”.

As for the other supporting characters, personally I don’t if roller derby lifestyles are similar to what is depicted in the movie. As much as I do enjoy Barrymore’s directorial debut, her role as Smashley Simpson is a bit too much while I do feel Kristen Wiig manages to pull off another solid supporting role like she has done in “Extract” and Juliette Lewis still does a great job in portraying the bad girl. Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern (who plays Bliss’s father) also do a good job as the parents of Bliss.

As for the Blu-ray, the picture quality for the film was very good and the lossless audio was satisfactory but it would have been great to have it a bit more immersive via use of the surround channels. And it would have been great to have audio commentary by Barrymore and Shauna Cross or even a featurette on how the talent prepared for the film or even Behind-the-scenes footage. I felt the special features were a bit short for this Blu-ray release. But as for the film, “Whip It” is an entertaining, humorous and a solid coming-of-age, feel-good style of film. And again, although roller derby does play a big part in this film, “Whip It” is not an all out sports movie. The film has many layers to it and fortunately, the solid performances definitely made this film enjoyable.

Overall, “Whip It” is a solid directorial debut from Drew Barrymore and fine performances by Ellen Page and its supporting cast makes this film better than expected.

Amazon.com
Drew Barrymore makes her bow as a director with this Roller Derby coming-of-age number, which shares the spirit of so many of Barrymore’s movies: it’s loosey-goosey, cheerful, and buoyant in waving its “Girls Rule!” flag. On screen, Barrymore relegates herself to a slapstick supporting role, handing the lead to Juno gal Ellen Page. Page plays a Texas teen with a yen to join Austin’s Roller Derby squad, complete with new professional moniker Babe Ruthless, but she’ll have to keep the side career secret from her beauty-pageant-obsessed Mom (Marcia Gay Harden) and football-watchin’ Dad (Daniel Stern). A coming-of-age tale emerges between bouts of skating on the RD track (Jimmy Fallon plays the goofy Derby announcer), with a dash of romance added in the form of a generic Dude in a Band. Kristen Wiig does surrogate-mom duty as a teammate, Juliette Lewis is appropriately out-there as a track rival, and Andrew Wilson (bro of Owen and Luke) gets some hilariously poker-faced lines in as the team’s coach. All the pleasant stuff makes you almost overlook how ramshackle the movie is, and how standard-issue the parental tensions (even if Harden is a total pro, as always). Ellen Page doesn’t offer the innate audience-friendly cuddliness of Barrymore herself–thus her apt casting as Juno’s brittle heroine–but her rapt focus is something to behold. “Babe Ruthless” indeed. –Robert Horton

It’s hard to fill that when Casablanca was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in 1942 it was “objective another” of the 50 or so films that the studio was producing every year, as Lauren Bacall points out in the documentary about the film included in the special features. The movie was an instant success with audiences everywhere, and won three Academy Awards including Best Relate. Called “America’s most approved and beloved movie- and rightly so” by The Motion Portray Guide, and “The best Hollywood movie of all time” by Leonard Maltin, Casablanca was voted the #2 film in a list of the top 100 films of this century by the American Film Institute.

Location in refugee strewn French North Africa in 1942, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a night club owner, and his friend Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains), Prefect of Police, enter into a wager as to whether or not Resistance Leader Victor Laslo (Paul Henreid) will be able to flee Casablanca and come the Free World. When Laslo arrives in Casablanca, Rick is panicked to collect him accompanied by his ex-lover, Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) . Filled with mystery, suspense, intrigue and romance, Casablanca will remain a well-liked of classic movie lovers for years to approach.

The supporting cast include Conrad Veidt, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre and Dooley Wilson as Rick’s piano playing confidant, Sam. The entire cast are obliging, the settings are profitable, and the cinematogrophy is fabulous.

The song “As Time Goes By” was made notorious by Casablanca, as it’s melody is entwined throughout the film, and it too is now a classic, filled with romance and nostalgia.

This is one film that absolutely MUST be in your DVD library!

I agree that any review of an HD DVD disk should include an belief as to its technical quality, if possible comparing it to the regular DVD release. For the Casablanca HD DVD, I found the following concept in the online magazine Perfect Vision, a high extinguish technologically oriented magazine: “Casablanca is the film to contemplate as the black-and-white showcase of hi-def. The setting of Morocco and Rick’s Café Americain jump from the veil in breathtaking crystal clarity.”

This is a cute DVD but not as top-notch as the Baby Genuius Nursery Rhymes DVD. First of all I don’t judge these songs are Current CHILDREN’S SONGS. The list includes “win me out to the ballgame” and “yankee doodle dandy”. I consider some of the songs are proper, but they should have had Children’s songs for young children, since this DVD is determined geared towards younger children. “Vow, Dance and Play” - sort of the BG theme song is done nicely. My granddaughter is a year weak - loves the Nursery Rhymes DVD and watches this one - it’s unbiased not as first-rate. But it’s peaceful inspiring for your child.

My 12 month former HATES the car. She has hated it since day 1. We have a DVD player in the car and play the Baby Einstein videos for her. She will tolerate them for a cramped while. She received the BG video as a birthday gift. She LOVES it. She has watched it over and over again. She has never been so calm in the car. This has totally saved me! I can’t wait to salvage more. I highly recommend this DVD!

In the gradual 70’s and early 80’s, television viewers fell in treasure with The Dukes Of Hazzard, a weekly foray into the fictional setting of Hazzard County, Georgia. Cousins Bo and Luke Duke (John Schneider and Tom Wopat) spent each episode trying to do wonderful, while the loveable “Boss” Hogg (Sorrell Booke) concocted various schemes for making money and having the Duke boys (who always foiled his plans) thrown in jail for violating their probation (the result of a deal with the federal government to slay the centuries-old Duke family tradition of bootlegging) .

Joining Bo and Luke are their Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle), a grandfatherly figure who owns the family farm, and Cousin Daisy (Catherine Bach), whose skimpy shorts coined the cultural term “daisy dukes”. Along with “Crazy” Cooter (Ben Jones), the local mechanic, they gain a formidable threat to the money-making shenanigans of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane (James Best) and the owner of seemingly every business entity in Hazzard County, “Boss” Hogg.

But critics will argue that the good star of the display was the General Lee, Bo and Luke’s gleaming orange Dodge run car with the Confederate flag pasted on its roof…

The Dukes Of Hazzard (Season 3) DVD provides a number of noted episodes, including guest appearances by musicians Tammy Wynette, Roy Orbison, and The Oak Ridge Boys. Sheriff Slight of Chickasaw County (Don Pedro Colley) makes his first of many appearances on the indicate in Season 3. With Waylon Jennings’s weekly narrations as “The Balladeer” (performing artist of the show’s legendary, chart-topping theme song), The Dukes Of Hazzard provides hours of family-friendly programming as Boss and Roscoe match wits with the Duke clan…

Below is a list of episodes included on The Dukes Of Hazzard (Season 3) DVD:

It’s a shame that Sony has yet to greenlight season 3 (possibly due to the fact that the two episodes that were banned from airing stateside appear on this station and Sony might be taking a wait and peek attitude to peep what BET will do in response since it was BET’s threat to sue that got the episodes banned in the first space) . As for BET… if BET execs are so concerned with how they’re portrayed in these episodes, perhaps they should think improving the quality of their programs rather than broadcasting… whatever it is they continue to pass off as entertainment. Sorry… I’ll gather off my soapbox now.

I found info that this dvd will be uncensored and uncut impartial like the first season. As an adoptive parent of 2 Eastern European Children both in orphanages since birth, I found this movie to be a NEEDED movie to search for for those who about to assume the unique and unknown dash into International Adoption. It was fair peculiar to look the movie and have the street of the orphanage Vanya was looking for being the same name of the street our daughter’s orphanage was on.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Italian! Click Here

We had the rare opportunity of staying in the country we were adopting from for 31 days and lived in an apartment in the city, which was about 40 minutes from the Village our daughters came from. We also were able to visit other orphanages and a TB Sanitarium with a Russian friend who regularly visits the children.

We found the conditions portrayed in the movie to be true. When I had to consume the toilet, I was led to the “guest toilet”. It was an aged decrpid shed with a bucket. The stench was so awful, I was willing to wait for a few more hours until we went succor to our apartment. Our daughters did not have that privelege. Baths, once a week. Clothing? Weak, dirty, holey, shoes too slight, if at all, but huge ole’ smiles on all those runt faces hoping that you will catch them home. Looks of hopelessness, sadness, despair, no future, no hope. We sat and talk to a group of teens who wanted to know if they could near to America. Tears streamed down their faces as we spoke to them and answered their questions. We brought sanitary napkins for the girls, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, laundry soap. Many times they do without these basic things. They have no running water.

They eat sub standard food and many have permenant health problems because of it.

Both of our daugthers were told they would be killed or sold. They were apprehensive. They were not told this by other kids. They were told this by workers. This was portrayed in the movie.

Our daughters were abused in the orphanages. This was portrayed in the movie.

(If you really want to stare the reality, read the Human Rights Portray on Orphan Neglect )

THEN… the movie touches on the “commodity” content. Adoption is proper in Russia and Eastern Europe. It takes Gigantic amounts of frustrating paperwork and you arrive by invitation only. The money changing hands is NOT to pick a child, but to charge for services: Paperwork translation, recede services etc. But it would be naive to mediate that there are not those unscrupulous facilitators who accomplish grand money off of desperate people.

There is Ample corruption within the agencies that permit adoption. Russia permits independent adoption without the employ of an agency, This waas portrayed in the movie.

All the children want their mommies. They dream of having their mothers. Vanya’s desire to inspect his mother again is lawful. I like the slay, which I will not mention here. As Vanya is writing to his friend to let him know that he is ok, hasn’t been sold for body parts and is joyful, you are left to wonder, is it apt? Fallacious? It gives you the lawful sense of hopelessness that portrays the life of an orphan.

And for those skeptics. Yes there are propaganda orphanages, fair to please foreigners.

First, let me say that it strikes me as wholly bizarre that anyone would review this film without having viewed it. Whatever your personal stake in the Russian adoption system is, you should probably air your opinions on it somewhere else, unless you’ve actually taken the time to conception the film (view review below) . The movie is absolutely pretty! I dispute Russian, so I quite enjoyed the beautifully done dialogue and the rural dialect and accent of the children. The subtitles were well done: yes, one could quibble with some translations, but they captured the essence of the unique Russian, which is not something many movies can say. Cinematically, this film is also beautiful: it captures the decay, poverty, and trouble of post-Soviet Russia perfectly, and does so in a draw that is always curious and never cheap or exploitative. It also portrays the orphans themselves and their problems and choices in a plan that is truly insightful. The record itself is also fine, and the ending is satisfying without in any plan being hackneyed or contrived. Moreover, the writing is capable. The characters are all complex, multi-faceted, and believable. No one is two-dimensional, and even the “villains” have some depth and even some sympathetic aspects. If you delight in deep, rich, and complex characterizations about the problems of everyday life, you will treasure this movie. If your notion of a apt movie is a series of explosions and shootouts, conclude away!

This film is an underrated gem. If you’re looking for a bloodbath mobster movie, this is not it. A Bronx Record is a movie with heart–and it honest so happens to be about mobsters.

Kudos to Robert De Niro on his directorial debut (may he mumble many more movies) . He did an outstanding job of presenting a cleave of life in the Bronx of the 1960s. Though his role as Lorenzo Aiello is rather limited, its attain is felt profoundly throughout the movie as Lorenzo’s son Calogero struggles between moral and defective. Lorenzo, representing the upstanding, hardworking Everyman, wants the best for his son and doesn’t want him to determine life with the mob. Sonny, the neighborhood mob boss, also wants what’s best for Calogero, or C, as he nicknames him. The moment in the film where this struggle is most keenly felt is when Lorenzo and Calogero are at the boxing match sitting in the “nosebleed” fraction. One of Sonny’s henchmen invites Lorenzo and Calogero down front at ringside, but Lorenzo declines the offer. You can recognize how hard it is for Calogero to refuse those seats. But he is torn by the worship he feels for his father, and wanting to be ringside with Sonny. The most poignant moment is when he apologizes to his father for wanting to sit with Sonny and tells Lorenzo that he appreciates his seat, though it’s far away from the ring.

Another spirited, though more subtle, aspect of the movie was how Rosina, Lorenzo’s wife, questioned Lorenzo’s refusal to accumulate alive to with Sonny. You could peek that she wanted a better life than the wife of a bus driver, and she didn’t seem to be too concerned with how it was achieved. That would have been an moving angle to leer, but the movie didn’t suffer because it wasn’t explored.

The element of racial tension and the inclusion of an interracial romance for C gave A Bronx Legend a more gritty feel. It wasn’t hard to boo C’s knuckleheaded friends as they harrassed blacks who passed through “their” neighborhood. The romance between Jane and C was tastefully done, and the actors who played the roles gave authenticity to the sweet, awkward relationship. Remember Sonny’s door test? Well, I was practically praying and crossing my fingers that Jane would unlock that door!

But the film belonged to Francis Capra (young Calogero) and Chazz Palminteri (Sonny) . The nine-year-old Capra was so convincing as a child who was perplexed by the inequity between salubrious and poor and all the gray areas in between. Palminteri really shines as Sonny, the suave but unsafe hood. The film is based on his childhood, and I believe he did a fabulous job (along with De Niro) of bringing the legend to the shroud. Useless bit of trivia I read on another site: Palminteri’s steady name is Calogero Lorenzo Palminteri.

I am writing this long overdue review shortly after the dependable life arrest of Lillo Brancato in the connection of a destroy of a Unique York City police officer. He played the young man in this sparkling movie which deserves to be seen by everybody. It is a beautifully written and acted production. Brancato portrayed so accurately the challenges of a young Italian-America youth being raised among the gangsters in his blue collar community. I always wondered why he virtually disappeared. Brancato’s tiny role playing a cheap gangster on “The Sopranos” didn’t even commence to equal what had earlier been expected of him.

Robert Di Niro is fabulous as the father, a proud bus driver, trying to form certain his only son remains a law abiding citizen. Chazz Palminteri is likewise lustrous playing the role of the neighborhood Mafia chieftain. He also wrote the titillating script. “A Bronx Legend” apparently was only modestly successful. I simply cannot understand why it isn’t considered as one of the very best movies of that time period. This is a family movie. Anyone who is a teenager or older should appreciate it immensely. You truly feel like you are visiting the 1960s. It is a warm and loving epic about choices that must be made early in one’s life. Lastly, why hasn’t Di Niro directed more films? You would consider that this particular work of art might relieve the vast actor to work more often late the camera.
