The only reason I picked this movie up [as a rental] was because of Morgan Freeman, an actor I’ve always respected and admired. The fact that Antonio Banderas plays opposite him also intrigued me, and then there’s the glorious Radha Mitchell. So, the view of these three together in a movie kind of made it an though-provoking choice, though I have to say I was disappointed with the results.

The movie is a standard heist film - Antonio Banderas plays Gabriel aka Gaby, an armed bandit who encounters Morgan Freeman’s character, Ripley whilst pulling off a robbery on a subway enlighten. Ripley sees potential in the relatively younger Gaby and persuades him to join him in a heist at the famed Romanov’s Jewelers. The objects of desire are two prized Faberge eggs whose existence have never been officially acknowledged but which Ripley assures Gaby are very powerful in existence and priceless [well, about 40 million]. Anyway, as Gaby agrees to be Ripley’s sidekick, he finds himself falling for Ripley’s Russian goddaughter [played by Radha Mitchell]. Things accumulate more complicated when a detective resentful of not being able to convict Ripley for his past heists starts putting the heat on the pair, despite being warned off by the Feds [who are investigating the Russian jewelers]. When Radha Mitchell’s character gets kidnapped, Ripley and Gaby are forced to accelerate against time to pull off the heist of a lifetime with some racy site twists along the arrangement.

What worked for me - the acting was credible on the whole, despite the listless and at times, implausible position. There is no great chemistry between Freeman and Banderas, and the pairing seems awkward. The legend itself is uninspired - there have been so many other heist movies that were grand better than this, and so I felt let down by the writing and the direction.

What does work is the chemistry between Banderas and Mitchell. Radha Mitchell is a very pleasing actress and she pulls off her role convincingly, playing a rather enigmatic character who seems to know more than she is letting on. The pair sizzle on-screen which helps the romance share of the movie,which happens to be another focus in this film. The heist section of the movie is rather former, though the action picks up when Ripley and Gaby finally smash into the jewelers, though once again, there is nothing original here.

On the whole, I’d recommend this as a rental at best - like I mentioned earlier, there are mighty better heist movies out there and “The Code” does not bring anything original to the table.

There are three approved leads in this that could beget it a must-see, but in the slay the chemistry only hits the designate with Radha Mitchell. We have a standard heist film with plenty of location twists (five in the last ten minutes) and suspenseful moments being supplied by Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas. Radha plays the goddaughter of Morgan’s world distinguished thief, Banderas plays the sidekick who falls for her.

Plenty of homages here, even down to the dance scene from Basic Instinct. They attach the same shirt on Banderas as Douglas, and a sexier more revealing dress on Mitchell - both grinding to some rave music. A very similar scene from Entrapment but Banderas instead of Zeta-Jones, and the list continues. There are also some wrathful Russians, ego-driven Federal officers, and rebellious NYPD hot shots filling the supporting ranks. What makes this watchable is wondering where the twists might reach in and seeing if they can pull off the impossible heist.

The Blu clarity looks mammoth at times, average in various other indoor scenes. The music makes the 5.1 rep utilized the most, and the supplements add a dry logistical feel to the rest. The cast interviews are forgettable and mismanaged, and the documentary gives some generic insight on production. Normally I would rate this similar in stars to the other reviewer, but the entire package makes for an delicious evening, filled with memorable scenes and Radha Mitchell finally playing an erotic rated R role.

I accidentally ran across the anime while searching around for other stuff and was intrigued on what it was about. Most of the time I wouldn’t acquire up an anime honest by the inspect of the hide, but this one looked consuming to me so I decided, hey what the heck! I’m pleased I did retract this one up, it’s definitely a keeper. I’m not going to spoil it for those who haven’t seen the ending yet, but it definitely caught me a bit off guard. Enormous ending in my plan. The animation quality and drawl acting(Japanese and English) is worthy. Large chronicle line that will definitely grab your attention. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes some action and drama. 5 stars.

I had ran accross this title awhile support when it was first released in Japan.

Looking over the effect work I had wondered, “WOW, what a cute and attractive looking demonstrate.” Unfortunately at the time this film, was in the stage of, “Here’s another arresting OVA series that might not effect it over here.” And it was a surprise that it was picked up and released here. I’m ecstatic that they did.

I had the opportunity to understanding this title over the weekend with a friend. And all I can say is “wow”. Very unusual in it’s simplicity and complexity.

While some at first look may peer at it as being cute on the outside the series hides a dismal side, a side that is “reality”. The whole point of it looking cute was a cover-up. And I must say the creators did a valid job at pulling at it off. This is not your typical anime film that manages to “spoon feed”, it’s viewers. Oh no, this is a very highly psychological fraction of work. I say this because, while the film projects one conception of things, what you’re seeing is not what it appears to be. Many of the elements in this 4-part series are very “symbolic”. It’s key factor “ADOLESCENCE. The driving force slow what the film is trying to prove in another light. Many will not win the references on the first ogle taking it as it is.

For example, in one point of the film there is a scene where all the students secure in what appears to be a gym. All the kids there are practically naked except for their gym shorts. They obtain their measurements taken. Like taking a physical. Yuri Otani, stands on the scale to accumulate weighed and height checked. She notices that she grew an run or two. One of the girls from a neighboring class (if not the same class) hears this and makes a comment to some of her friends,

“I hear they say that the girls from class … who wear ‘Borgs’ on their head, grow an creep taller.”

Yuri overhears this. While some of the girls giggle about the comment her friend jumps to her defense even though they were only making fun and didn’t mean anything cruel. As unfamiliar as this film was, there had been attempts to build it into a film for quite some time. If one is familiar with Bette Davis’s career, there had been a couple of attempts to film it with her in the lead with various leading men (including James Mason) . But surely Katherine Hepburn is the perfect Rose Sayer. Like in THE PHILADELPHIA Narrative, she can communicate self-righteousness better than anyone. Davis would only have managed egotistical haughtiness. But I’m positive everyone would agree that the casting ended up being for the best.

Bogart and Hepburn play two diametrically opposed personalities in this classic film residence during World War I. She is a prim and ample, middle-aged English missionary. He is a gin-soaked river rat living by trading up and down the Congo River from a ramshackle frail steamboat named The African Queen. They are thrown together by a German offensive that leaves them isolated and in distress of being captured and held as prisoners of war (or worse, they could be shot as spies) . To hasten, they must move down the river past the Germans. What follows is fraction comedy, share tense drama, and fraction high adventure. The river and its wildlife pose as remarkable of an obstacle as the Germans, and Bogart and Hepburn must not only learn to pick up along, but to trust in, and rely on, each other to survive.

This is a astounding movie. The acting is grand (Bogie got an Oscar for “Best Actor”), the fable is splendid, and the scenery is heavenly (it was shot on region) . They honest don’t obtain earn them any better than this, and I can’t imagine any reason why anyone would NOT want this in their collection. Very highly recommended.

I haven’t yet seen the dvd version, but am satisfied it’s being released. Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell made two film noir-ish films together — “Macao” and “His Kind of Woman.” They’re both great, but I acquire this one. Made in 1952, Mitchum and Russell were at the height of their bigger-than-life attractiveness; and as subsequent interviews with them have shown (I saw one a few years ago on TCM), they actually liked each other and have an easy-going, unpretentious ease to their playing which makes it easy to root for their romance in this film. Mitchum is rightly admired for his acting, but Russell is underrated — she has an “I know I’m stunning, but it’s no immense deal” attitude that is supremely likable. And in a film like “Gentlemen Consume Blondes,” which I’ve watched many times, Marilyn Monroe clearly is the charismatic star, but Russell gives agreeable encourage, and her “no nonsense” line readings are really expert (and abet state Monroe up) . The status of “Macao” is rather dense and hard to follow, but the decor and ambience carry the day — the contemplate undoubtedly has to do with legendary director Josef von Sternberg (who the stars and crew hated) ; but some of the scenes, according to that TCM interview, were actually written and/or improvised by the two stars. Known as Gunnm in Japan and then Battle Angel Alita to Western manga readers, Battle Angel (in all of its incarnations) is now part of the canon of Blade Runner-inspired anime cyberpunk.

The film version follows a “Hunter Warrior” and cyborg healer named Ido. Ido formerly lived in the floating land of Zalem (Tiphares in the book), the paradise that hovers over the refuse heap of Scrap Iron City in which he now resides with his former lover, Chiren. In his travels as a bounty hunter (killing spine thieves in a world in which human nerve tissu has become the most precious commodity), Ido one day discovers and repairs the remnants of a cyborg whom he names Gally (Alita in the manga). Though possessing the body of a young woman, Gally embodies Ido’s most sophisticated and lethal cybernetic skill. In the first episode on the DVD, “Rusty Angel,” Gally challenges Chiren’s own creation, Greweicia–a brain-eating gladiator–to a death match. In “Tears Sign” Gally discovers that her first love, Yugo, has put himself in the employ of the spine trader Vector so that he can earn his way, he thinks, to Zalem. Gally confronts her fellow bounty hunters to protect Yugo, only to watch him horribly wounded in a plot to capture her for Vector.

Yukito Kishiro’s finely detailed line drawings in the original manga (like a cleaner version of Miyazaki’s style in the Nausicaa books) are impossible to translate into film. What the film loses in detail, however, it makes up for in its intense action sequnces and shadowy mixtures of color and a darkly cinematic soundtrack. Anime fans should be prepared for some pretty graphic violence–including some horrific scenes of decapitation. Also, the action keeps the plot moving at breakneck speed, so character development often seems to happen in leaps; you’ll want to read the books to learn more about Gally/Alita and her world.

For English speakers, the DVD is best watched in the original Japanese with subtitles. The dubbing seems to raise the pitch of everyone’s voice, changing the mood of the film from tragic-cool to slightly comical. Gally’s English is especially annoying. With her original Japanese voice (sometimes childlike and sometimes a seductive whisper), she is a perfectly deadly heroine with a leather-clad style that anticipates The Matrix. –Patrick O’Kelley

Black comedies don’t come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don’t come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to “reach out” and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal–she’s a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with–and together they make Harold & Maude one of the sweetest and most unconventional love stories ever made. Much of the earlier humor arises from Harold’s outrageous suicide fantasies, played out as a kind of twisted parlor game to mortify his mother, who’s grown immune to her strange son’s antics. Gradually, however, the film’s clever humor shifts to a brighter outlook and finally arrives at a point where Harold is truly happy to be alive. Featuring soundtrack songs by Cat Stevens, this comedy certainly won’t appeal to all tastes (it was a box-office flop when first released), but if you’re on its quirky wavelength, it might just strike you as one of the funniest movies you’ve ever seen. –Jeff Shannon
