The movie primarily takes a peruse at two Holllwood stunt woman: Jeannie Epper, who doubled for Lynda Carter during the Wonder Woman series hasten, has been working in the business for approx 30yrs and comes from a whole family of professional stunt men and women; and Zoe Bell, a Recent Zealand native & young up and comer who doubled for Xena during that shows six seasons who is now looking to originate her notice here in L.A./Hollywood.

We accumulate the background of each woman, a leer at the difficulties that women face in the business, a lot of celebrity interviews, and some additional celebrity cameos that the filmakers shot while making the film.

What I particularly enjoyed was the immediate bond between Epper and Bell. Epper seems to acquire Bell under her cruise rather snappy by helping with critical training and allowing her to discontinue at her home while she struggles to derive work and build her beget name in the stunt woman profession. It’s a nice inside watch that goes to reveal not everyone in “the business” is honest out for themselves. Epper comes across with marvelous eagerness, kindness, and integrity as she guides Bell through the Hollywood machine.

If the status line so far interests you, or your a fan of shows like Wonder Woman and Xena, then this documentary should not disappoint.

Recommended.

This movie explores the lives of 2 astounding stuntwomen: Jeannie Epper (Wonder Woman, et. al.) and Zoe Bell (Xena) . It provides an spellbinding leer at the newcomer, Zoe, and her struggles in finding her diagram into this predominantly male profession. The profile of the legendary Jeannie Epper was very interesting to me. At 60+ years of age, Jeannie is collected going strong and detached pursuing work. Amanda Micheli has done an fabulous job putting this film together.

The DVD also contains some mammoth interview footage with Lynda Carter and Lucy Lawless. The only disappointing aspect is the fact that more of Jeannie’s Wonder Woman footage was not included. As I understand it, Micheli wanted more footage, but Warner Brothers was not cooperative. Who knows why???!!!

I also had the privilege of seeing this film in the theatre, along with a live Q & A sessions with Lynda Carter, Jeannie Epper, and Amanda Micheli. What a thrill. It was so astronomical to hear Lynda and Jeannie record their days on the Wonder Woman site and give praise to each other for their respective performances. Amanda also gave tall insight into the making of the film and what her vision had been for the project. She is a spruce lady herself and presents a terrific documentary that you will want to check out.

A inspiring, bouncy, kaleidoscopic plan on the topless dance girls of the slow 60’s.

The most memorable short scene, is that of a ridiculously proportioned girl, Darlene Grey, doing a topless boogie in the desert. Otherwise runt, she almost falls over on several occasions, because of the weight of her swinging breasts!

Unlikely to be forgotten in a race.

My son wanted a Dora video with the babies in it. It’s a hit for his 3rd birthday!

My daughter loves Dora’s twin brother and sister, and adored the new “Shapely Babies” episode, so we were thrilled to peep a novel DVD featuring the twins. This DVD did not disappoint! In the title episode, Dora and the Neat twins go on a storytime adventure to acquire the missing Dream Fairy and abet bring cheerful naptime dreams to all the waiting babies. This was an adorable episode that featured several well-liked lullabies like “Rockabye Baby,” as well as a replay of the fresh “Well-kept Babies” song. We loved it!

The other episodes on this DVD include “Dora Helps the Birthday Wizzle” - yes, another well-liked friend from stale - “Pirate Worship Hunt,” and “Benny’s Care For”. All four of these were newer episodes that we hadn’t previously seen on TV, which was especially nice as most of the Carve Jr videos we’ve had in the past include only two “recent” episodes along with two older, early season ones that we’ve seen 1,000 times already. Overall, a very nice DVD!

Monumentally influential film from 1960, directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. A disaffected group of lazy, rich Italians recall a glide to the volcanic islands south of Sicily. After they halt at one of the islands, one of their number, a fair young woman named Anna, suddenly vanishes. Her lover (Gabriele Ferzetti) and her best friend (Monica Vitti) scour the island for the missing girl — no brand. Like any man in his factual mind, Ferzetti’s character Sandro almost immediately finds himself attracted to Vitti’s Claudia — she’s taken aback at first, but only on a superficial level. The movie then chronicles the search for missing Anna — and the burgeoning affair between Sandro and Claudia — encourage in Italy. The rest you can examine for yourself. What *L’Avventura* did for cinema was to shine light on the interiors of the human heart in a design that movies had been shocked to attempt before. The definite charge one can lay against Antonioni’s masterpiece is that it’s tedious and lifeless for that very reason — a film character thinking about something doesn’t exactly constitute action-packed cinema. Do understand that this movie is not for all tastes . . . but if you’re reading this review, you’re probably already captivating and are considering buying the movie, to which I say, Recall the tumble. *L’Avventura* is about ennui in our novel life — ennui in our personal lives, ennui in our professional lives. Go ahead, snicker. It’s easy to dismiss the subject as pretentious. Perhaps it IS pretentious — but can you really inform the relevance of the subject matter? Can any man — deep down in his heart of hearts — not identify with Sandro, an overgrown boy sorrowful in esteem and work? Can any woman not be impressed with Claudia’s inner growth from shallow party-girl at the beginning of the movie to the Rock of Gibraltar she evolves into at the extinguish? *L’Avventura* is a grown-up masterpiece for grown-ups. [Criterion furnishes us with an immersive experience for this movie. You catch the incandescent transfer, of course, but you also glean instructive commentary from critic Gene Youngblood, from which I certainly learned a lot. The second disc features a documentary about Antonioni made in the mid-60's -- it's very French, very pretentious, and very absorbing. It also includes Jack Nicholson, of all people, reading Antonioni's mid-life-crisis screed against worn morality, another essay in which the director displays a hilarious contempt for the utility of actors in film, and finally some personal recollections from Jack himself, who good-naturedly puts the bright director firmly aid into region. This whole package is well worth the money, if what I've described is up your alley.]

…this Criterion DVD edition of L’AVVENTURA is a widescreen anamorphic 2-disc spot, with the first disc movie-only and the second containing extras. I applaud putting the movie on its possess disc, so that there could be less video compression and the portray quality could be at its best (whenever I scrutinize a single-disc DVD fully loaded with extras, I immediately wonder if the higher degree of compression needed would cause any compression artifacts on the relate) . The picturesque photography of L’AVVENTURA really demands as perfect a video transfer as possible. I’m gratified Criterion has delivered on that regard, for this DVD has simply one of the best black-and-white transfer I’ve ever seen. Efforts have been made to eliminate blemishes frame-by-frame, so this DVD is significantly better looking than Criterion’s absorb laserdisc version made in 1989. There is a “restoration demontration” among the DVD extras that shows how the narrate looks before and after the clean-up.

Subtitles have been significantly rewritten compared to the LD. With my microscopic knowledge of Italian I’m of the impression that the fresh translations are more literal, closer in meaning to the current dialogs, and have less paraphrasing and abbreviation. For instance, in an early scene where Anna confides to Claudia, the LD subtitle reads, “These separations are terrible, absorb me.” On the DVD it becomes, “It’s harrowing having to be apart, really.” The spend of “harrowing” seems more edifying than “dreadful” in conveying the connotations of the the Italian word “mostruoso” (heinous), and “really” is the genuine translation of “verimente”. In another dialog later in the same scene, the LD subtitle is abbreviated into, “It’s not easy to withhold going like this…at a distance,” whereas the DVD’s translation is honest almost word for word, “It’s difficult keeping a relationship going, while one is here and the other there.”

The best extra on the DVD is a terrific 1-hour documentary about Antonioni’s work. It has numerous interviews of his collaborators (including Fellini) and acquaintances, all of whom give insightful answers about the genius of the director. It mentions a astounding anecdote: several reporters and writers at Cannes signed a letter of assist in reaction to the hostile reception of L’AVVENTURA by others (the bulky letter is reprinted on the DVD booklet) . There is also a improbable clip of a deleted scene from L’AVVENTURA. My minor quibbles are none of his films is dealt with in any length or depth, and not too many of clips of his films are shown.

Buy,Download, Or Stream L’Avventura - Criterion Collection! Click Here

Three extras from the LD have been retained on the DVD: the English theatrical trailer, Antonioni’s eloquent statement on science versus proper (reprinted on DVD booklet), and the audio commentary by Gene Youngblood. Not on the DVD is the LD’s photo gallery of then-and-now comparisons of the locations seen in the film. The DVD also has 3 audio segments: 2 of Antonioni’s writings read by Jack Nicholson, and one of Nicholson himself lavishing praises on the director. Of the two Antonioni writings, the first is almost a duplicate of his “science versus suitable” statement, and the second is an analysis of the purpose of a film actor.

In order to procure large rewards in life you have to catch gargantuan risks. If there is one thing that the Star Crawl universe hasn’t done in 20-25 years its choose risks. The franchise has suffered greatly for it, continuing to follow a formulaic advance that has made the franchise obsolete, predictable, and for quite a while… Lifeless. Not sick, not on life befriend, but D-E-A-D.

Those days are over.

The 11th feature presentation is quite simply the first Ample Star Paddle movie ever made. While others in the series have been exquisite, there was no definitive movie that stood out, nothing that could be pointed to as something current, something special, something that takes RISKS.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Trek! Click Here

What you catch here is the biggest risk that has ever been taken in the Star Trudge universe in its 40+ years of existence.

I will not kill this risk but if you are a fan of the movies at all you will know it when you seek it. Being a long time fan of Star Go (I am a Next Generation first and foremost) and having seen the trailer numerous times I figured out what was going to happen about 20 minutes before it did but that didn’t cessation the shock when I witnessed this awesome writing decision played out on the large mask. The strongest of Star Lunge lovers (especially TOS people) will no doubt have a lot of outrage at this risk but it was the just fade to form. The Star Slouch franchise needed to be shaken up, it needed something current and it needed a movie to shock and dismay the audience.

Man did it ever roar.

This movie is an absolute JOY to experience. Spock was always my current TOS personality as he probably was for most fans, but I never felt the connection to this cast that I did to Picard, Data, Worf and the Next Gen cast so I really didn’t care what changes they made (and there is another major change that involves 2 characters that you never have experienced before in TOS history) if they were for the better. In all cases these were for the better and executed with near-perfection by JJ Abrams (who might later be revered on the same level as Gene Rodenberry if this re-visioning [this is distinguished more than a simple reboot] succeeds like I assume it will) .

Since I don’t like getting too deep into spoilers with reviews instead of focusing on the legend (try your best to quit ignorant as possible of the chronicle so its fresher when you gaze the film) I will instead focus on the characters we know so well (and some we don’t) .

True To The Character We Know

Spock (played by Zachary Quinto) - Even though Kirk (ahhem William Shatner) was advertised as the lead of TOS, the sincere centerpiece was Spock. The work here by Quinto is beyond exceptional and complements the astounding work done by Leonard Nimoy the past 40 years. Quinto plays the character as well as you could imagine and the staunch special thing in this movie is that finally (FINALLY) the half human side of Spock is heavily examined. It is a major allotment of the movie and no doubt will continue to be focused on in future films. Spock is no more or less essential to the crew and chronicle as he always has been. Other actors could do lesser work (they didn’t) but the movie franchise will only succeed as well as Quinto acts. The character is in the best of hands.

Bones (played by Karl Urban) - The gem of the entire movie without request. Karl Urban takes the difficult role of playing not only Bones but Bones played by DeForest Kelley and is he ever incredible. It’s a complete joy to search for his character on the shroud. Urban doesn’t need to do anything different in future films. You can protest how hard he worked to hold the Bones character as he has always been and he hits a home race out of the park. Astounding astounding wonderful

Scotty (played by Simon Pegg) - We don’t meet Scotty until far into the movie but Pegg does a astronomical job doing James Doohan. Since Scotty was always kind of the “middle” character on the reveal where he wasn’t wasted but wasn’t the tops (Spock, Kirk, Bones) all Pegg had to do was do a qualified Scotty and hopefully the script-writers would give him more to do. This is the case here.

Revisions And Improvements Made

Kirk (played by Chris Pine) - No longer do we pick up the ultra womanizing, overacting of Kirk/William Shatner but we catch instead a focus on the risk-taking side of Kirk and this is the Kirk that I could truly learn to savor. Over and over again we seek why Kirk in Star Stagger canon is revered so grand and his choose no prisoners arrive is achieve on the front burner all throughout this film. Pine is confident and does a incredible job. I don’t care how revered Shatner is, the writers got it legal with this re-visioning of Kirk and it’s thumbs up all the plot.

Sulu (played by John Cho) - Not mighty to say here. Cho was resplendent but nothing fantastic in his performance. Sulu fights a itsy-bitsy bit but hopefully more focus can be made on him in the future, no problems here but nothing jumps out.

Uhura (played by Zoe Saldana) - As a communications officer her role is Distinguished better in this re-visioning. She is given more brilliant input by the script-writers but the one major canon change of Uhura (which I can’t go into detail in this review) I am smooth trying to choose how I feel about. Her mod is the 2nd biggest risk/mod taken in the movie.

Complete Rewrite

Chekov (played by Anton Yeltin) - Except for being Russian and making fun of his thick accent this is a completely unique character and man was this a serious improvement. Instead of the bumbling doofus that really doesn’t do anything now Chekov is a ultra-young uber-intelligent officer that plays pivotal parts in the movie. Yes this was a serious canon change but I can’t imagine how any fan wouldn’t approve because now you have a right character you can be emotionally attached to.

New Characters

Nero (played by Eric Bana) - Bana instantly becomes one of the main villains in Star Poke lore and in my view because of events in the movie he now becomes THE single villain in Star Stir history. I wish Nero could have been on the conceal more but with only 2 hours and so many people to glean on the veil I deem the correct balance was struck.

Old Friends

XXX - You will know who this is when you watch them. I have no complaints other than one voice-over piece where the narration seems a bit silly and uninspired but I also contemplate this is because of the circumstance how they are speaking. This dilapidated friend was a +++ to the movie and not unprejudiced a ploy to rep people in the seats. A welcome addition to the movie and status.

Intangibles

Bridge - The novel bridge is the most magnificent bridge you will ever scrutinize. Some say it looks ‘too sexy’ or ‘too bright’ but THIS is how the bridge should have always looked. Please please please don’t change it for the future films. You have already achieved the perfect notice.

Score - The one downside of the movie. The 3rd trailer featured some of the most radiant background accept ever and my hopes were very high. The pick up that is featured in the movie is serviceable but doesn’t inspire. I was disappointed with the destroy result. It’s alright but it could have been so remarkable more.

IMO ‘Star Trek’ achieves what only 1 Star Perambulate movie (IV - The Voyage Home) came end to doing and that is being a successful film to the general public, not unprejudiced Star Hasten fans in general. This is the quickest 2 hours you will use this summer and an absolute joy. I can survey several movies being made with this cast and I hope several are made. The events of this film build for a realistic advance to the unique cast working anew in these unusual revisions. As the movie ended I wished I could fade ahead 2-3 years in time to witness the next chapter and the next and the next.

Everyone likes to putrid the movies in order and I knew 1 hour in this was EASILY (stamp I don’t even flinch when I say EASILY EASILY EASILY) the greatest Star Trail movie ever made. You know a movie succeeds when a character or a movie itself feels like candy for the brain (last year Heath Ledgers Joker was the ultimate ‘candy’) and this is some yummy candy.

If you are a Star Breeze fan go notice it and try to have an begin mind for what you will perceive. Many will be radiant with the changes made. For the ones that aren’t would you rather have changes and current Star Stir movies or the same traditional same former that had ruined the franchise for so long (kudos to Rick Berman as the official murderer of ST)??? If you are objective a person that loves movies you (yes YOU) can even savor Star Run as this movie has been produced not honest for the Trekkie but the every day Joe and Jane.

***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

I spent two hours on a wonderfully sunny Saturday afternoon to inspect Star Whisk and it was worth every minute/penny. Color me impressed. If you’re familiar with the series then you’ll probably inspect several characters you know, objective in a younger form:

If you haven’t seen the series though then scare not because that’s definitely not a pre-requisite. Other than saying that this movie is a pre-quel to the celebrated obsolete school iteration of the series, there’s not powerful I can say that without spoiling the really fun region. Having only seen a few episodes of the unique series though, I walked out not only magnificent impressed and pleased but I actually wanted to examine up stale episodes (which are available legally online at Hulu and TV.com and others) because it got me really involved in the show’s storyline. From talking to my friend who was a fan of the series, I’m not certain how well the state fits in with the series that succeeds it, but I have a theory that I can’t piece without spoiling the movie. Anyway, there were several nods to the series to give fans that giddy nerdgasm that you can only glean from being in the know on the series.

Every aspect of this movie was really appetizing. They all came together to effect a genuinely fun movie experience. I judge almost every actor fit their role very well - especially newcomer Chris Pine as James T Kirk and Zachary Quinto (Sylar) as Spock. By the procedure, don’t survey at the IMDB cast list because it has a few spoilers. The location had a few minor issues, but I didn’t accept any of them to be dealbreakers. The script was strong, but had a few minor issues (mainly a couple of scenes I didn’t deem needed to be in there) that I didn’t mediate were very noticeable. Even though it was more than 2 hours long it really didn’t feel that long and there was an gargantuan amount of welcome funny relief sprinkled throughout the film. Oh, and the visuals were tasteful and well done. You have to interrogate a lot of CG in a movie like this, and that’s probably the only valid downside to the movie. If you’re one of those purists who hates seeing CG, then you’ll definitely remove state with this.

I highly recommend running to your nearest theater to examine this one. I’m actually probably going to pre-order it on Blu-ray, in fact, so that I can peek it again. It’s one of those movies where I can’t rob all the scenes because there were so many titanic scenes and they were quite dense. I’d say it’s a solid A movie and appropriate for the whole family. There was almost no nudity and no dreadful language, although the state may be too complex for some kids.

“Did you explore that movie, Night of the Living monotonous? ” Practical Joker middle-aged Frank (Jim Karen) takes the first shot as he trains teenage clueless freddy (Tom Matthews) in a medical supply warehouse. Why? Simply because Frank claims “that” movie was based on actual events: An incident in a military detestable gripping a nerve-gas chemical so much, it can turn corpses into brain thirsty monsters. And several cannisters of that chemical are hidden in the basement, lost in a delivery confusion. Of course Frank had to display freddy the cannisters and the expected accident happens: The chemical is released, Frank and Freddy inhale it and regain knocked-down, while one the most recent, detestable, hysterical, creepy and silly versions of the zombie apocalypse is unleashed: “The Return of the living lifeless”, a bloody title posted in the most gross possible map thanks to the melting face of one of the most foul zombie characters ever conceived, “The Tar-man”. Let the furious corpse catastrophe begins, as the medical specimens of the warehouse, included the frozen human corpse in the freezer room, half-dogs and nailed insects reach to life in one of the most disturbing but humorous nightmares ever filmed.

Ignored by critics and considered impartial another awe B-Movie popcorn flick, a Romero’s satyrical teenage film, garbage as well as the tons of cheap horrors movies saturating the 80’s industry, this movie is one of the most silly, lively and necessary Zombie films released in the 80’s. Dan O’Bannon directed in 1985 this teen, punk rock soundtrack apprehension sage that became a epic among alarm fans worldwide. Not a masterpiece obviously, and the differences with the Romero zombie mythology are hughe, so let’s disect this movie with the befriend of Romero and get out why this movie is so different and awesome.

- ZOMBIE CULTURE: Forget Zombies, those slow-motion and staring ghouls wondering around without direction, more real dizzy, pale people. Romero teached us: This is creepy because they are us. Now in 1985, Enter the foul CORPSES, out of the grave, hungry and enraged predators. Compared to these ravenous, frenetic and carnivorous human-remains, Romero’s zombies are almost polite, even worried. They can also sigh and they bellow in afflict out of faulty hunger, they speed, they eat brains instead of flesh, they are gory monsters, not “us” anymore. And what about the renegade body parts, or the Tar-man, THE zombie of all times: Hear him breathe through his rotten-to-fluid lungs! Creepy! Lucio Fulci’s or Mario Bava’s unfavorable corpses? Sand of another bag. This is Comedy after all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Return of the Living Dead! Click Here

-THE RIGOR MORTIS: By far the most vital point: Why reanimated corpses eat brain? How does it feel to be slow? How does the so well described Rigor Mortis functions in order to invent a thrilling experience on the viewer, based on Frank and Freddy’s “descent to hell of the undead” experience? The sickness, the numbness, the harm. This movie is all about Harm, the wound of the living insensible, not the victims. For the first time in such a goffy, horrific and intelligent arrangement. With Romero, pick up bitten and after an hour you die and become a ghoul. The transformation in this film is recent and agonizing, detailed, long and psychologically tense, devastating.

-PUNK ROCK AND GRAVEYARDS: Comical drunken Teenage punk rockers, why do you appreciate to party in graveyards? Don’t you know you will win your brains eaten? Who’s fault is that, that we care for so worthy the slaughter of the young in apprehension movies? Sadism meets a limit here: the teens are clever enough to react mercurial and with efficiency. Some of the characters are laughable but not forgetable as the usual B-horror flick moron teen. They deserve to live, we cheer for them, not against. Cops? They die well. Military? Were are they and who cares. Gargantuan action, tension, dense humor and macabre situations. Rush impartial to acquire trapped. Fabulous electrifying action.

Those three points were the most significant i can contemplate of just now. A genre defining movie came out this B-movie Popcorn flick. A must peer for awe fans, and HEY! Modern fans of this relentless and commercial unusual dismay industry of re-makes, improper mutants slashers and torture: CHECK THIS OUT! FUN, FUN, FUN. Cheesy, humurous, ugly imagery. A dependable self-aware zombie movie, a total classic.

Last Thing for my fellow dismay friends: Who cares about what Zombies “Should” do according to father Romero, as long as we’re falling from the edge of our seats!

Think about it. My respects for the father, who i never worshiped fortunately, and for you.

Enjoy this incredibly relentless movie in the best DVD edition available, this one: Peek at the box, the extra material. I gain the previos MGM release and they are sparkling grand the same, but for first timers, here’s your edition! A must have, definetly.

I’ll bag the complaint out of the draw first… THE EDITED SOUNDTRACK! I know it seems minor, and compared to what Warner Bros. did to Fraction II, it’s miniscule, but I’m tranquil kind of irked that MGM can’t seem to good the soundtrack from their unique DVD release. This IS, after all, one of my accepted movie soundtracks ever. It only happens in three scenes, and two of them are objective shortened. The only one that’s actually replaced is ‘The Damned’ - ‘Dead Beat Dance’, that originally played in the scene when the group is going to assume up Freddy… Why they edited and replaced some songs, I have no thought. Possibly something to do with the rights. So I’m ecstatic ‘Return of the Living Dead’ was one of the few VHS’s I didn’t sell… Wish I could say the same about Piece II. Although the sequel is nowhere Reach as clever or horrifying…

SPOILERS

Still, the movie remains the classic it was in ‘84. I’ll give a brief area synopsis. Freddy is being given the rundown on life in the MEDICAL SUPPLY WAREHOUSE business (the befriend of the package says it’s an Army surplus store) by his boss, Frank. The two unwittingly unleash a toxic chemical developed by the Army that causes the expressionless to become reanimated. On their arrangement to acquire up Freddy from his first day on the job, his punk-rock friends choose to terminate off in the loacal cemetary and the fear ensues, especially when our would-be victims peruse that these zombies are a miniature harder to end then the ones George Romero cooked up in his classic ‘Night of the Living Dead’, of which this might be considered a very loose spin-off… Along with some Colossal tombstone action from Linnea Quigley, there’s also a sparkling deal of humor along the plan, but I gotta admit… This movie smooth gives me chills. Far more so than any other zombie movies, with the exception of Romero’s films. The zombie interrogation scene, where the zombie explains that it hurts to be uninteresting, and you can feel yourself rot… I mean, unprejudiced the Belief of that Unexcited creeps me out. Although the reaction to this from Spider always gets a laugh out of me. Also, the ending is aesthetic chilling. The Army’s “view” is classic, and in a device, coldly realistic.

The cast and characters are qualified. Everybody in the film hands in a memorable performance. I really cherish Clu Gulager in this. I mean, his portrayal of the average middle-aged joe, with that ancient members-only jacket and everything (Did anyone else’s dad feeble to wear that? Besides Al Bundy, I mean…), suddenly cast into this extraordinary place is a see to discover. I assume the rest of the cast is objective as immense, but he makes this working-class guy so memorable.

The narrate and audio of the DVD and all that stuff is perfect. I already had the other DVD, but I got this one hoping the soundtrack would be corrected, but I gotta say the two featurettes more than justified it. I’m elated they were able to catch interviews with so many of the cast members. Anyway, I first saw the film probably about fifteen years ago, I’ve seen it numerous times since then, and it’s calm one of the funnest anxiety flicks I’ve ever seen. Definately in my top 5.

With the reality TV glut mercifully showing signs of abating, it looks like there could be a modern flourishing of quality scripted TV, and FX’s Rescue Me deserves to be at the forefront of any such charge. Mighty has been made of the complex, extended storylines incorporated by so many shows in the past decade or so (e.g., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, ER, etc. etc. etc.), and this one is no exception, but it peaceful deserves credit for its boldness, realism, and skillful avoidance of predictability. Surprised as I was to realize it about halfway through the season, Rescue Me reminds me a big deal of a exhibit I extinct to witness with my wife succor when we were engaged, also known for its outlandish poignancy, its emphasis on bonding and complicated relationships, its bawdy position pieces, and its heavy exhaust of Fresh York City as an ancillary character. Yes, that’s true, at bottom Rescue Me has a spacious deal in accepted with Sex in the City, except with a lot more fires and death.

It becomes apparent elegant snappy in the premiere episode of this note that it’s not the politically moral post-9/11 tribue to firefighters that one might be given to quiz. In the opening few minutes, we gawk Denis Leary’s Tommy Gavin having the first of many lenghty coversations with his cousin and best friend Jimmy, which wouldn’t be all that new if Jimmy hadn’t been killed in the World Trade Center attacks. It’s only about five minutes later that another firefighter complains about the decline in his level of action (only he uses a mighty more explicit word) as the memory of the attacks fades. As introductions go, it’s a heavenly appropriate one.

Things don’t go too far uphill from there. Filled with realistic dialogue and compelling performances, Rescue Me strips away the layers of adulation that have surrounded firefighters since 9/11 and reveals them as what they are: people doing a job. Yes, they might be braver than most, but the firefighters depicted here are tranquil flawed, multifaceted characters faced with all the recurring problems and terrible habits of right people. This is shiny, lively stuff, and while it can acquire a bit sensationalistic, it’s considerably more grounded in reality than, say, Nip/Tuck. At its best, it’s a savagely droll, darkly spirited testament to the chaotic tragicomedy that is our existence.

This first season is some of the most compulsively watchable television around, becoming as addictive as a crack habit as it careens from one compelling dwelling line to another, combining its delirious vulgarity with an almost total lack of romance. One of the show’s underlying themes is the plan that people crazy enough to race into burning buildings for a living might not be entirely stable in their personal lives, and one of the most endearing qualities of Rescue Me is the intention it manages to prefer its characters at both their strongest and their most vulnerable. Even during the more emotionally charged dwelling threads-the fallout from Chief Riley’s beating of a tickled ex-firefighter; Lieutenant Shea’s poetry writing; Franco’s discovery that he has a five-year archaic daughter; the introduction of a woman into the house-Rescue Me exhibits a splendid refusal to give in to sentiment. With few exceptions, the characters here don’t have ample epiphanies or act in completely contradictory ways from episode to episode and they certainly don’t always do the true thing; they’re presented as is, with all the nagging inconsistencies associated with our species.

Leading the plan is Leary as the protagonist Tommy, a walking contradiction whose dedication to his job and his family is matched by his inflame, self-destructiveness, and guilt. Tommy talks to the ghosts of the people he’s seen killed; cheats on his semi-estranged wife when he’s not tormenting her yuppie boyfriend; drinks compulsively; and starts an ultra-illegal affair with the widow of the aforementioned Jimmy, and all along it’s nearly impossible to conclude watching him. With Leary clearly having fun snarling and shouting his procedure through the role, Tommy easily makes for one of the more compelling anti-heroes in TV history, especially when he begins his major downward spiral in the season’s final few episodes. While Tommy’s (and the show’s) excesses can come by a bit numbing after a while (do firefighters really net as remarkable as these guys do, or talk about it as explicitly? ), in the raze it’s all share of the fun. For those dreadful souls who can’t afford HBO (this writer included), Rescue Me is about as gallant and inspiring a display as you’re likely to accept on cable. Oh, and the Von Bondies’ Near On, Approach On makes for quite possibly the single best introductory song in TV history, having managed to do Rescue Me the one present whose opening credits I always design it a point to inspect.

Denis Leary has been one of my common comedians since the Cindy Crawford-obsessed, rapid-fire riffs on MTV ages ago. Even though (on some level perhaps even because) the Bill Hicks Preservation Society as a whole has dedicated their lives to reminding anyone who will listen that Leary’s entire career as a stand-up comedian was based on ripping off (if not actually doing) Hicks’ act, Leary is smooth enchanting because the personae you look onstage (and in such recorded classic songs such as “@$$hole”) is so completely different than the life the man actually leads. He’s a devoted family man who spends a heckuva lot of time working with local charities, most famously the Cam Neely Foundation.

Which is the dependable personality brought to this made-for-late-night basic cable series; what we have on the surface appears to be a heartfelt tribute to “Unique York’s Bravest”, the Fire Department of Original York City. And in many ways it is, but in grand the same procedure “Slap Shot” is to professional hockey or “North Dallas Forty” did for pro football. It’s very noteworthy a locker room’s belief of things, most definitely a more fair portrayal of the occupation than you’d seek in the more feeble “Emergency!” series or the big-screen actioner from Ron Howard “Backdraft”.

The paradox of this series is that the profession is typically portrayed (properly so) as modern-day knights in shiny armor, but the men who wear the armor as being frequently less than chivalrous in nature; indeed, there are elements of every single character in this indicate that are impossible to warm up to; Denis Leary’s Tommy Gavin, whom I want very powerful to like, is one of the more dispicable characters ever portrayed in series TV. To say that he is complex is an understatement; he is a living, breathing contradiction, Leary’s absorb life as a comedian/family man encapsulated here. It’s a terrific portrayal of someone who has lost the device, with a tumble either into the oblivion of madness or the damnation of snort darkness awaiting him; the longer you gaze the prove you fair know that there is no diagram things are going to destroy well for him. You want them to; he’s Denis Leary, he makes you laugh. But at the same time every time you want to bag terminate he does something to drive you away and himself closer to the inevitable waste that awaits.

And the thing is, every other character in this exhibit is the same arrangement. There’s not a designated “heavy” character to foil the protagonists; in this prove, EVERYONE is Frank Burns/Charles Winchester. No one is entirely (or even remotely) pure of heart, and if you’re expecting a routine dose of heroism, you’re in the wicked set. “Rescue Me” takes the viewer to a shadowy region, where light and reverence are rare commodities, and where reality is a brutal state where heroes are often revealed as being only human, and sometimes even less. The fact that the note is completely watchable and the fastest hour on TV these days speaks volumes of the talent of the producers and the actors. Despite everything, you level-headed waste up caring about these people and desperately want to gaze them finish their respective freefalls. Even though you know they can’t/won’t, you know you’re going to tune in again next week. Huge stuff.

Conan the Barbarian, the movie that turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. It’s the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role as the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard’s pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius’s screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard’s fantasy world. To avenge the murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of QUn Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez). Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as “the perfect fantasy for the alienated pre-adolescent,” this blockbuster is just as enjoyable for adults who haven’t lost their youthful imagination. –Jeff Shannon

A bold engaging miniseries from the BBC

“She’s got people talking!” That’s what everyone says about Ros Pritchard, the successful supermarket manager and mother who ignites a political firestorm when she stands for Parliament and ends up winning the general election. Running on little more than charm, honesty, and common sense, Ros knows next to nothing about politics. Will her passion and determination be enough to guide her as Prime Minister?

Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Absolutely Fabulous) delivers a warm, winning performance as an ordinary woman who goes to extraordinary lengths to bring politics back to the people. She relocates Parliament to make it more accessible to the masses. She introduces “No Cars Wednesday” to tackle global warming. At the same time, she juggles the needs and demands of her increasingly frustrated family, which she fears is slipping away from her. With humor and charm, The Amazing Mrs Pritchard takes a bold unflinching look at the modern political process — and the toll it takes on our leaders and their loved ones.
