Meh… buy the theatrical cut instead
There’s no doubt that Tropic Thunder is one of the funniest movies of the year- if not THE funniest movie of the year. I remember seeing in the theater and laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe. I was excited when I found out that there was an unrated DC coming out… 2 discs, and 15 more minutes more footage.

However, as much as I gotta say the movie rocks, I have to say: BUY THE THEATRICAL CUT INSTEAD. The unrated version slows the movie down a bit, and most of the added stuff doesn’t seem to fit in. They changed some funny lines, and even took some out as well. In fact some of the added stuff makes the movie feel a lot longer than it really is, and after awhile the movie seems repetitive, which is one of the few things that killed the movie for me.

So if you’re planning on buying the DVD, get the single disc rated version instead… this movie is definitely one of the funniest I’ve seen, and I definitely look forward to owning it, but really, just get the theatrical. It’s MUCH better.

Robert Downey, Jr.—Excellent Performance
I never understood why Downey, Jr. received job after job after being released from prison. I knew he was a good actor, but his portrayal of Iron Man and his performance in this movie was just phenomenal (I never saw the Charlie Chaplin movie). I know this movie offended some, but my husband and I are Black and we missed some of the dialogue in this movie from laughing so hard. We were picking out family members who really talk like that! This movie is hilarious. It’s unfortunate that Oscars aren’t considered for these types of movies/performances. All of the characters in this movie contributed to it’s pleasing experience, however, RDJ stole EVERY SCENE he was apart of. Great Job, RDJ!!! I’m now one of your biggest fans!!!

Politically incorrect with the rude comedic spirit of Blazing Saddles
You’ll laugh but this movie isn’t for the easily offended. Heck, even a few hard-to-offend viewers will cringe, too. A comedy hasn’t had this much in-your-face political incorrectness since Blazing Saddles.

You’ll be worn out by the end of this two-hour movie but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The hardest laughs come all too quickly before the film settles down to a slower pace.

The story follows a group of high-maintenance actors on the set of a Vietnam war movie that is spinning out of control and likely to become the all-time box office flop, pushing aside Cutthroat Island, The Adventures of Pluto Nash and Basic Instinct 2.

Ben Stiller has the most screen time but Robert Downey Jr. steals the scenes as an Australian method actor who manages to eclipse Robert De Niro’s famed transformation in Raging Bull.

Jack Black (in a nod to Eddie Murphy’s The Nutty Professor), Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel round out the rest of the main acting troupe. In smaller roles, Nick Nolte portrays the author of the book, Tropic Thunder, which “got” the movie deal (there’s an in-joke). Matthew McConaughey appears as Stiller’s TiVo-crazed agent and Tom Cruise appears nearly unrecognizable in creepy make-up as the film’s producer. Not a single actor displays anything approaching subtlety or sanity.

One final warning: skip the DVD extras at your own risk. The viral video for MTV is hilarious.

It’s not really a knock to say that nothing in Tropic Thunder is funnier than its first five minutes, so sly that–especially for people watching in theaters–you don’t realize right away they are the opening minutes of the movie. This outrageous comedy begins with a series of fake previews, each introducing one of the main characters in the film-proper (not that there’s anything proper about this film) and each bearing the familiar logo of a different motion picture studio: Universal, DreamWorks SKG, et al. Such playing fast and loose with corporate talismans verges on sacrilege, but it’s an index of how much le tout Tinseltown endorses the movie as a demented valentine to itself. The premise is that the cast of a would-be “Son of Rambo” movie shooting in some Southeast Asian jungle get into a real shooting war with drug-smuggling montagnards. Don’t ask–though the movie does have an answer–why such highly paid, usually ultra-pampered personnel as superhero Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Mozart of fart comedy Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), hip-hop artist Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), and five-time Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus from Aus-try-leeah (Robert Downey Jr.) should be running through the jungle unattended and very vulnerable. It matters only that the real-life cast has a high time kidding their own profession and flexing their comedic muscles. Bonus points go to Stiller for co-writing the script (with Justin Theroux) and directing, and to Downey, brilliant as a white actor surgically turned black actor for his role and utterly committed to staying in character no matter what (”I don’t drop character till I done the DVD commentary”).

Be warned: The movie, too, is committed–to being an equal-opportunity offender. Its political incorrectness extends not only to Lazarus’s black-like-me posturing but also Speedman’s recent, Sean Penn–style Oscar bid playing a cognitively challenged farmboy–or, in Lazarus’s deathless phrase, “going the full retard.” Others in the cast include Steve Coogan as a director out of his depth, Nick Nolte as the Viet-vet novelist whose book inspired the film-within-the-film, Matthew McConaughey as Speedman’s sun-blissed agent back home, and Tom Cruise–bald, fat-suited, and profane–as an epically repulsive studio head. Two hours running time is a mite excessive, but otherwise, what’s not to like? –Richard T. Jameson

I have always been a fan of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” cartoons at a very young age. I have a lot of the episodes on tape and adore to detached seek them. I had heard that there were three non-animation movies out on the series but was never really compelled to search for them. But the other day while at the video rental store, I decided to rent all three out. And what a surprise I got when I saw the first film for I actually enjoyed and loved watching it!

15 years have passed since a rat named Splinter (Kevin Clash) found four baby turtles in a puddle of ooze in the sewers. Because of the contact with the ooze, Splinter and the four turtles became mutants. Naming them after Renaissance artists, Leonardo (David Forman), Raphael (Josh Pais), Michaelangelo (Michelan Sisti), and Donatello (Leif Tilden), Splinter teaches them the former secret art of fighting. When the mysterious nasty Shredder James Saito organizes the Foot Clan formed of young teenagers, causing the city to be in uproar because of vandalism. With the wait on of reporter April O’Neil (Judith Hoag) and feeble athlete Casey Jones (Elias Koteas), it’s up to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to keep the day!

The movie has an arresting story-line if not extremely cheesy and corny but hey, that’s how the new cartoons were! In fact, I would have found the movie unlikable if it hadn’t contained some of the cartoon aspects of the modern series. Also a lot of spicy facts are revealed like how Splinter’s past is related to Shredder and the beginnings of the turtles.

Comparing the movie to the series, I was a bit surprised to gain that movie usually centers on the character of Raphael. His character is a bit different from the series, a bit more hot-tempered, impatient, and more of a loner. Leonardo is smooth the leader, Donatello doesn’t pick up worthy chance to work with gadgets and computers, and Michaelangelo… well… he’s peaceful his usual likable self! April O’Neal is also working for Channel 3 news instead of Channel 6 News. The adding of Elias Koteas as Casey Jones was an bright thread to insert for he was a fun and likable guy.

The martial arts and fighting were well choreographed and was scrumptious to study. I especially liked the fight at April’s space, the waste fight with the Foot, and the last fight with Shredder. The movie is also sprinkled from beginning to demolish with amusing parts, quotable lines, and humor. Jim Henson should also win credit for doing an wonderful job with the turtles and Splinter.

To sum of the movie, whether you are or aren’t a turtles fan, I highly recommend this movie! Lots of fun and expansive entertainment, it’s terrific for the family. The movie is rated PG because of some language, the fighting, and since it has some gloomy moments. I also recommend the next two “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movies. The second one, “The Secret of the Ooze” is my personal celebrated of the three.

Back in about 1988, a phenomenon erupted. Nobody knew exactly what was so cold about this phenomenon, but every kid in the country had to have the figures, video games, board games, Halloween costumes, etc. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have unfortunately grown ancient, briefly resurrected by an unwelcome live-action Fox Kids television program a few years ago. But, oh, during the turtle hype… what a radiant time for kids it was. And when their first feature length film came out, kids dragged their parents to go seek it. The kids (myself included) naturally loved the film. It was the hot topic during lunchtime in the school cafeteria. The Turtles were dominating EVERYTHING…

Ten years later, for me at least, the film is detached as gripping as ever. When I first saw it, I couldn’t have cared any less about the script or place. I impartial wanted to notice the four boys in action. Yet watching it now, I’m impressed at how well-made it actually is (the lighting, in particular) . Is it technically five-star material? I mediate so. Some would disagree, but you simply can’t down a franchise that you grew up with. And you can’t demand a 40 year stale movie critic to rave about the movie when he has no understanding where it’s derived from.

What shocks me the most is how people talk about how dreadful the script is. I’m now 19 years outmoded, and some parts of this movie had me cracking up. (”The only thing ample in the woods… would be the trees!”) And it’s not objective the humor, either. The dramatic elements in the movie are distinguished more tense and titillating than they have any upright to be.

The bottom line is that this film is VASTLY underrated. And people shouldn’t down it objective because it was loved by millions of kids across the globe. If you ask me, children have the upper hand when it comes to watching a movie. They want nothing more than to be entertained, and are less demanding than adults are. Give the movie a shot and don’t be such a prude. If you’re expecting a “kiddie” movie sprinkled in abundance with watered-down action and insensible dialogue, then you’re in for a enormous suprise. This is one of the moodiest PG movies I’ve ever seen.

Good sequel, valid sage and a shrimp something for fair about everyone (dogfighting, cold-war theme, hot-shot flying, pleasant guy/bad guy and even a limited romance to spice things up a bit — Oh, and Sharon Brandon, well — I’d cruise with her!) . The only thing it really lacks is authenticity on the enemy fighter planes; so, if you’re a fighter plane buff, you’ll gape the enemy planes as fine ‘ol vietnam era U.S. surplus.

Otherwise, if you liked Top Gun, you’ll want to discover this movie at least once.

I liked this movie — the action was solid and the station well-behaved enough but I was disappointed that they killed off Doug Masters. Determined he’s a showoff punk (as we saw in the first movie) but we all grew to like him and root for him as the first movie progressed, and I judge it was a steady mistake to destroy off the series’ main protagonist like no mammoth deal. It seems to me that if the producers could do anything to send the Iron Eagle films down the toilet it was to destroy the hero, but other than that I liked this movie. It was as valid as ‘Firebirds’ with Nicolas Cage, but without all the dead jokes and comments the pilots in that movie made that rendered that film mildly annoying. I would have given Iron Eagle II five stars but killing Doug cost one.

Yep, there’s nothing I like better than ordering a DVD of my all-time popular violinist, sitting succor to relish it, and finding that I’m hearing the notes a bulky half-second or so before Heifetz plays them. Now Jascha was exquisite genuine, but that’s one feat he didn’t intend. My guess is that in transferring this archaic (c. 1971) video to DVD, the tech folks at BMG either were unable or (what’s worse) didn’t give enough of a damn to properly synch the audio with the video. C’mon, guys…Heifetz deserves better than this. Having said that, Heifetz is composed spectacular at the twilight of his career (he stopped performing in public the year after these performances were recorded) .

I have both the DVD, and the VCD made in early 70s. I regret to say that there is indeed a split second of non-synchronization. I also regret to say that neither the sound nor the see in the DVD has been remastered. So, for those who already have the VCD, don’t bother about the DVD unless you seize to have faster chapters selection.

Having said that, it is sure that the recorded sound of this films are on the whole better than the reproductions of the earlier BMG records. That was probably because of the different time of recording and perhaps, Heifetz had stopped to allege to have the microphone very end to the violin… In any event, we have a fuller looming sound of his violin that is comparable to his last recital (CD-RCA) . Camerawork is first rate too. It is, however, not a upright DVD production.

Even at this stage of Heifetz’s career, with all my admirations for him, my verdict for his Bach and Mozart remains the same: here I catch Milstein more. But it is completely another record for his Scottish Fantasy and the smaller pieces which are impartial magical. I’m vexed however there isn’t worthy in the clips showing him giving lesson to his pupils.

I screened both episodes and the space of the first was not all that spellbinding to me. Worth watching on the equipment that was avalible to gaze it on fair to glimpse the high def in action but aside from that nothing special.

This episode really got me intersted in seeing the rest of the series, however, as it delves far deeper into the exodus from earth as well as exploring more fully what is apprently a giant lunar government conspiracy. I fully demand to seek all of the remaining episodes when I have the time and the money…

Which brings me to my last point. In order to pick up $30 out of this HD DVD you would have to be a enormous fan of akira and that kind of animation style AND maintain an impressive 1080p television AND absorb a surround sound system to match. Even given the criteria that you treasure the series and the other work but the director and writter (like Akira) it’s smooth barely even worth the money unless you have the equipment to gawk it on.

As far as this episode goes I’d say it was a very enthralling <30mins and on the system I viewed it on it might actually be worth a capture at $30 but on a more popular system or a PC I’d have to say pass.

This second disk shares the numerous drawbacks and few strengths of the first one. The manufacturer bizarrely believes that they should release these disks one at a time and charge a high effect for a 22-minute episode. It’s crazy and it is the important reason why you should not select this disk. Eventually Geneon will release all the episodes in a single box position and then it may be worth buying (depending upon the impress) . But true now if you retract each disk you will slay up spending over $150 for what amounts to about two hours of entertainment. Is it really worth $80 an hour? No.

There are other irregular things about this release. The first disk had English dubbing. This one does not. That means that you have to read the subtitles all the intention through the episode. I know that anime fans negate that this is the only profitable arrangement to look, but while you are reading the words you cannot recognize the action, and vice versa. Why are the two disks inconsistent in format? Similarly, disk 2 has some background explanation (as an intro to the episode) that was missing–and badly needed–on disk one.

I also did not pick up any extras on this disk (and did not collect them on the first disk either) . I’ve read about all the “ample extras” but they are either hidden leisurely confusing menus or they are only unlocked by going to a website. To repeat: I cannot get any of the extras on either disk.

That said, the legend for disk two is better and more enthralling than disk one. Disk one was more subtle and simply introduced the characters and it was only at the kill did we accumulate an gripping mystery. That mystery is explored considerable more in disk two and the anecdote darkens. The benign government of the lunar colony appears to be hiding a huge secret.

The imagery is enormous (even without HD-DVD), the colors are dauntless, the animation is top notch. This would be a very toothsome series if only the studio would approach to its senses and release it properly, as a box plot, with right extras, and at a reasonable notice. How long will we have to wait for them to do that?

And while “Science of Sleep” is another exploration of the mind, it’s a radically different kind of movie — visual, quirky, and with a bittersweet edge. It has some disjointed moments, and it’s not nearly as accessable, but the overall attain is like one long dream.

In a arrangement, this movie is about escaping reality, into the labyrinth of your mind — it might obtain you feel better for awhile, but ultimately it won’t solve your problems, or improve your life. And to score cherish, you have to face the afflict of reality. By the finale, some measure of peace is attained — but calm its meaning is utterly ambiguous. The viewer can resolve what happens.

For the visuals, Gondry falls abet on his music-video past. His music videos for the White Stripes, Bjork and Chemical Brothers were all wonderfully peculiar, and this movie is corpulent of kittycat suits, tall hands, and other magical items that seem plucked from a child’s whimsical daydream. Even the mundane surroundings are colourful and striking.

Bernal plays a difficult character — let’s face it, Stéphane is rather unusual, with a child’s wonder and selfishness. But through glimpses into Stéphane’s mind, Gondry creates sympathy for his awkwardness and creativity, and his yearning for appreciate. The scenes where Stéphane and Stephanie (similar names for similar people) design things together has a curiously innocent intimacy.

Whimsical and almost hallucinogenic, “The Science of Sleep” is one of the most new and compelling movies of the last year. It’s not as accessable as his prior films, but it has its enjoy bizarre charm.

The Science of Sleep isn’t an easy movie. Not at first, at least. I begins a bit self-consciously and then creeps up on you, drawing you into the irregular, unsettling worlds of the subconscious and then playing tricks with the viewer about the sometimes subtle differences between dreams and reality. I found myself in strangely familiar terrain, thinking befriend to my first admire and the sadness, joy, wonder, insecurity, and, finally, wound over what was never meant to be. The moments of private craziness and creativity. The magic of that emotional bond on young hearts. Flipping relieve and forth between the mainly realistic and the sensationalistically bizarre, The Science of Sleep is a meditation on the human mind and heart.

I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It’s probably my popular movie. The Science of Sleep causes the same emotions to well up inside me; it’s a similar, but modern meditation on the familiar theme of who we are, why we care for, and the weird magic of human relationships.

Not many people savor watching “archaic sad and white” movies anymore. The claims I hear most are that there isn’t enough action, there are no special effects, and the plots are tedious. Many of those same complaints can be made about current movies as well. The biggest incompatibility is that you can’t hold your whole family to look those films because of all the swearing, violence, and sex whereas a family can devour watcing an passe film together without any peril of having to blind the youngsters eyes and shroud their ears.

AMAZING ADVENTURE is not a tremendous movie; it’s impartial the usual race of the mill worship anecdote. However, there is one exception that makes the movie a par above the rest: Cary Grant. I have yet to peruse a terrible movie in which he acted. Not only that, but Grant had the rare ability to select even the most mudane movie moments and transform them into cinematic magic. Such is the case with Improbable ADVENTURE. The set of the movie revolves around a rich young man who has inherited a large fortune. He finds himself becoming ill and seeks the aid and advice of a doctor. The doctor tells him that he is physically fit, but is affected by the disease of money. He places a bet with the young man, absorbing him to work for one year by his gain means and not by using his inherited fortune. What follows is the “extraordinary adventure” as Grant moves from one job to the next, learning lessons of humility, and falling in appreciate. Youngsters may rep the movie dumb, but adults will probably indulge in it and the lessons the film instills can’t be heard enough in contemporary society.

If I was ever amazed by an inexpensive DVD, this was the one. Definite, time has taken its toll on the film print. Distinct, the transfer to DVD could be better, in fact it could have been considerable better. But, IF you are able to ignore some natural degradation, a petite grain, and a couple of minor skips(not enough to interfer with continuity) YOU ARE IN FOR A Right TREAT!

With its “Depression Era” overtones, this movie exemplifies many forgotten attitudes, ambitions and values of the 1930’s. It presents certain character lessons that are timeless in relevance. Belief it once, and then thought it again with your grandparents/grandchildren. You may be surprised by their comments.

For some proper comedy pay particular attention to the apartment fight scene. You might have to push the “finish” button until you discontinuance laughing.

My guess is that this DVD will be highly enjoyed by all ages under 10, over 50, and all those between 11 and 49 who are able to scrutinize beyond the purely superficial.

Christopher Lee, long Hammer Studios’ house villain, takes a rare heroic turn as scholar and occultist Duc de Richleau, the kind of role that Peter Cushing had made his metier. Lee plays Richleau with a dark elegance and intensity–he’s a commanding figure with a trim goatee who discovers that the son of a war buddy has joined a satanic cult lorded over by the quietly malevolent Mocata (Charles Gray, best known as the narrator in The Rocky Horror Picture Show). Director Terence Fisher, working from a literate script by genre scribe Richard Matheson, creates a strikingly handsome period piece (set in 1920s rural England) dripping in dread as Richleau and Mocata battle for the souls of two young lovers on both physical and spiritual planes. The action scenes are well handled and the towering Lee cuts quite a figure leaping through hoards of robed devil worshippers to save a sacrificial victim, but the film peaks in an eerie supernatural battle in which Richleau and his skeptical party confronts Mocata’s demons while protected in a giant pentagram. The effects are coarse and dated by today’s standards, but the gorgeous period detail, vivid color, and unsettling imagery create a sinister ambiance, and Fisher’s mix of psychodrama and swashbuckling action makes for an engrossing thriller, a life-and-death struggle between two masters of the forces of light and darkness. –Sean Axmaker
