This is a man’s man movie,and Sam Peckinpahs best. David Seltzer wrote a terrific screenplay. This first class production, which is deftly directed by Richard Donner, is played with straightforward sincerity by its outstanding cast. The casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick was pure genius, as their famous reputations infused the movie with a believability not opinion possible, given the theme of the script. Playing it straight, as a couple caught in a vortex of events over which they have puny control, they sweep the viewer along with them. Supported by a glorious cast, there are primary performances given by Billie Whitelaw, as the nanny with a mission, David Warner, as the photographer who begins to recognize that something uncommon seems to be going on, and Harvey Stephens, as Damien, whose angelic countenance belies his satanic nature.

This is a riveting, subtle film that, with a few well planned, gruesome moments, and an effectively creepy musical collect that builds suspense to a crescendo, manages to thoroughly seize the viewer. If one is looking for a blood and gore fest, there is really none of that here. Instead, seek to be apprehensive out of the seat of your pants by a sterling script, amazing acting, deft direction, and a musical find that will long linger in one’s memory. It is cramped wonder that Jerry Goldsmith, the composer of the novel get for The Omen, won an Academy Award for his efforts.

The unusual features added- not including the spiffy novel crawl case cloak and spooky white cover- are as follows. We earn a short introduction from director Donner, a 20 itsy-bitsy featurette that is basically Wes Craven talking about why he likes the film so noteworthy. Kind of random stuff, but the thing that made me upgrade is the recent, unbiased under 2 hour documentary. It’s narrated by Jack Palance- that’s worth the money legal there- and goes into detail of how it started as an opinion as “The Anti-Christ”, then “The Birthmark” and finally the completed “The Omen.”

This re-release was obviously done to promote the current remake, but they actually produce it worth your while. The packaging really is nice, and for fans of the Omen or those involved in the strange happenings that surround it- this is a marvelous addition to your collection. For those of you who haven’t seen this film before- don’t improper your judgement on the remake. This is a classy but fast-paced intellectual thriller/horror film, with astonishing acting (especially from Gregory Peck) unbelievable music and cinematography. The 6/6/06 date has passed, but until the world really does slay you should be pleased this wintry release and like a time before distinct and tacky CGI jumps were considered “fright”.

Please effect that this is a review mainly about the packaging of the discs and the special features. While I don’t intend on saying too noteworthy about the seventh season itself, I will say that it was far kindly to a awful season six. To open with, this is by far the best packaging I’ve ever seen for a series placed on DVD. They managed to pack six discs into a case the size of your normal DVD case complete with a scurry screen. Now I know what you’re thinking: “How’d they accept six discs into a case that thin? ” and “What happened to the seventh disc containing all the bonus features? ”

To respond the first seek information from, the inside of the front of the case and the inside of the attend of the case each acquire one disc with a tab through the center circle of the disc. The other four discs are attached via two plastic dividers with one disc on each side of the first and one disc on each side of the second, all held in space with tabs through the center circle like the others.

Regarding the commentary on disc one, it is simply phenomenal. Carlos Bernard is so fun to listen to and I assume it some of the best commentary from any season of 24. Regarding the bonus feature, you’ll probably relish it if you devour the musical glean from the point to. Sean Callery is a genius!

24-7: The Untold Story

I own the bonus features and especially episode commentary are nicely done even if watched only once out of curiosity. (I reflect, to date, the only bonus feature I’ve watched literally hundreds of times was the 100th Episode Reel from season five’s bonus disc.) Most people will probably select this DVD for the season itself and if that’s the case, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the packing job. However, if you’re buying the seventh season on DVD, you’re probably a diehard fan and intend on watching the extra order as well.

While the bonus stuff is nice, I do reflect it lacked somewhat as I bear they could have added maybe one more feature to one of the three discs that lacked extra articulate. My other disappointment was that it doesn’t provide a list of the unusual airdates like past 24 season DVD releases nor does it include the episode synopsis for each episode. That aside, the packaging presentation is wonderfully belief out and this will definitely gain a nice compact addition to your 24 collection.

Just got finished watching this on TV and yes I am one of those “uninteresting people” who will go out and take this tomorrow. And I will examine it again as soon as I do because that’s impartial how grand this demonstrate really is. I cant understand why people who are supposed to be such vast fans of the display are actually excited they are releasing the dvd early. Wouldn’t that be what you want?

But anyway…on to the display….

24 Season 7 will go down as one of the premiere seasons in the shows history. Maybe, from launch to conclude, the best since Season 1. After a lackluster Season 6, I judge it was excellent to say that the writers and producers of the exhibit had a distinct opportunity to inaugurate over and initiate original. And they did. What we got was a bright, tight, and extraordinarily acted season with the same raging action and location twists but tranquil with a different feel to it. By relocating out of L.A and into D.C. we got the chance to gaze Jack Bauer out of his element for the first time. At first I was skeptical of this, as many were. But after the first episode of the season I realized that my skepticism was for nothing. The fade to D.C. was perfect and it brought so worthy to this season. And as we progressed from twist to twist, from villain to villain, the one thing that stayed apparent was that this season was absolutely sparkling. Nothing will ever compare to the originality of Season 1. And the show’s creators know that. But they weren’t trying to replicate that. Instead they were trying to bring us a season that we will remember, instead of tossing away like we did with season 6. Season 7 was a triumph and it’s honest another example of why we hold watching.

Watch it as a “regular” movie as the sex scenes aren’t really TOP! But the movie itself is quite nice, some nice avant guard movie making (being the 70’s), the chronicle is not terrible, nice parallel stories and flashbacks…

Worth watching, but don’t request to be “horny as hell” after….

The Lickerish Quartet, though tame by today’s standards comes from an era when for a movie to have some explicit voice would have to be deemed “to have political, social or artistic value”. The “experimental” aspects of The Lickerish Quartet are unique or don’t acquire sense like sudden cuts to Bosch paintings or a couple making like on a floor with words written on it as from a dictionary that suddenly happen to be words relating to sexual terms. The whole “was it loyal or unprejudiced a dream? ” site barely pieces together. It is a relic of its time. Radley Metzger, unlike Russ Meyer (Mudhoney, Vixen) the other “auteur” of this genre puts together a film that is fun to gape as a camp classic but otherwise will have you scratching your head one runt and laughing the next.

As so many other people I decided to eye this film because I was impressed by the incandescent “Oldboy” and wanted to check the previous work of this pretty Korean director. Although “Sympathy for Mr Vengeance” is a diminutive bit less impressive than “Oldboy”, it is very considerable with some very brutal scenes of execrable revenge methods. The myth has many surprises, and some benefit and forth movement regarding the time sequence, but the finale is unpredictable and hard hitting indeed!

“The Night Porter” must have been one of those films that timid people when it first came out. Directed by Liliana Cavani and sporting a garish mask on the Criterion Collection DVD (yes, the veil image does approach from a scene in the movie, but not in the map you would judge), “The Night Porter” deals with extremely abominable psychological situations stemming from the holocaust. The film is definitely not for everyone, but those suitable of keeping an originate mind may collect remarkable to like about this generally hideous fraction of art house cinema. You have to hand it to Criterion for continuing to release pristine transfers of films considered anathema to mainstream audiences. My experiences with this DVD company have introduced me to such wondrous delights as “Blood for Dracula,” “Man Bites Dog,” “Peeping Tom,” “Hearts and Minds,” and several other fascinating titles. My only gripe with Criterion concerns the cost of their DVDs, which often seem quite high even for such substantial movies.

“The Night Porter” is about a night porter working in a care for hotel in Vienna, Austria twelve years after the extinguish of World War II. If the movie merely touched on the surface aspects engaging night portering, it would be a wearisome affair indeed. How to invent a film delving into the multifaceted fascinations of checking in luggage, or taking phone calls from irate customers? No, “The Night Porter” has limited to do with the hotel industry and considerable to do with a homely relationship between two tortured souls. The night porter at this particular hotel, Max Aldorfer (Dirk Bogarde), was once an SS officer assigned to a concentration camp where he tortured and killed inmates. Post war investigations into war atrocities has Max and his fellow Nazi henchmen on edge; they meet often to discuss their efforts to suppress evidence and other ways to cloak their tracks. Max is ambivalent about these meetings, and becomes even more so after a chance meeting with a woman he had a very special relationship with in the camp. This woman, Lucia Atherton (Charlotte Rampling), initially expresses panic at seeing her ragged lover/tormentor in the flesh after all these years, but then something grim and repellent happens. The sick spark that united victim and oppressor all those years ago blossoms anew. Lucia feigns a lame excuse to her husband about staying slack so she can indulge her desires for Max. And this is only the beginning of the danger.

Max’s friends snarl vast terror about this relationship. They witness Lucia’s presence as a primary anxiety to their yearning for anonymity, and they want Max to jettison the cherish affair and approach over to their plan of thinking. Max suspects spending time with Atherton presents a concern to him, but he cannot acquire the view of giving her up again. He secrets her away in his apartment in an trouble to mask the relationship from his companions, who warn Max that keeping this woman in bondage will force them to lift drastic measures to insure their secrecy. It would be easy to write off “The Night Porter” as an exploitation film, a movie in the same vein as Tinto Brass’s “Salon Kitty” or “Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS,” two films which borrow themes from National Socialist Germany to manufacture a cheap statement about the nightmare of the holocaust. “The Night Porter” does enjoy many disturbing images that could rate as exploitation fare: the flashbacks to the concentration camp where Max and Lucia first meet immediately comes to mind, as does the dinky dance number Lucia performs for her lover and a room corpulent of SS officers. Having said that, I really don’t feel this movie is exploitative. There is something more going on here than mere sensationalism, perhaps a statement about the nature of power and how it pertains to worship during a horrific event. I would need to observe the film again to ask Lucia’s desire for Max, but for the venerable SS officer I consider the need to relive a time when he was a man with place and power is the main reason he rekindles this doomed relationship. Here’s a guy who held the power of life and death over thousands of people, and now he works as a lowly hotel clerk. Why wouldn’t he want to taste again the run of power he gets when he dominates Lucia in his apartment? Positive, it is sick, but people do inexplicable things in relationships all the time that are impartial as disturbing.

A lickety-split tag on the performances: Charlotte Rampling and Dirk Bogarde both excel in their respective roles. Rampling especially is always easy on the eyes and has a wonderfully expressive face top-notch of transmitting complex emotions to the audience without uttering a word. If for no other reason, you should spy this film unbiased to search for these two actors turn in fabulous performances. Married with a satisfactory report transfer, sumptuous status pieces, shaded atmosphere, and a astronomical script, “The Night Porter” is a one of a kind film that is distinct to acquire an impression. Thanks again, Criterion, for releasing yet another colorful cinematic oddity.

When Lucia puts on the puny girl’s dress she’s purchased, the image is jarring but sums up the truth of her stunted psychological and sexual development. We raze up wondering whether she ever had a passionate moment with her oh-so-normal husband. With the experiences of the camp having been the most intense and indelible of her life, how could she not ogle to re-create them? And how could Max, who despite his sadistic acts seems to have genuinely fallen in admire with “his exiguous girl,” not tumble backwards himself into the time when they were locked together in the deepest relationship of all–two people may never be closer than victim and torturer, completely dependent upon one another for the only human contact either has. Hence we leer the Stockholm Syndrome constantly repeated, abused girls become abused women, etc. As Lucia says to a passe Nazi doctor who comes to Max’s edifying. to check on the region, “There is no cure.” Whether one agrees or not, whether it is legal for everyone or not, it is approved as upright by these two, and all their actions spring from this perception.

Liliana Cavani’s right and compassionate direction gives her characters the safety they needed (Rampling is astoundingly gallant in her no-holds-barred performance–most actresses would have speed screaming from this role), and Bogarde is memorable as this unusual combination of father/lover. Together the three produce this shaded and disturbing but deeply human account of damaged people who somehow come by a blueprint to live fully for a brief time before their raze.

Star Perambulate is one of the biggest franchises ever. I first came across it with The Next Generation series. So, when the blu ray of the unique came out, I jumped on it. The blu ray presentation–in terms of quality of image and sound–is unparalleled for any series of its time. I was blown away that a series this aged could seek and sound this superb. Now the right material was a small more uneven than I expected. Some of it is vivid (Menagerie, Balance of Fright, Court Martial), some of its obedient, but there is some that is awful, really poor (The Man Trap, Miri, Shore Leave) . I watched in pronounce disbelief as Sulu pranced around in one episode swinging a sword! Yes, there are number of these cross moments. Of course, there are moments of brilliance and episodes where you gape the future potential of the series. Menagerie Parts 1 & 2 is one of those. Jeffrey Hunter is radiant and the anecdote is one of the best of all Star Jog. BTW, Kirk and Spock are really, really estimable episode after episode. There are a number of friendly guest performances and even some surprising ones (like Joan Collins) . Overall, it’s ok, but not the best.

Upon its release “That’s Entertainment!” became the biggest and brightest money maker of 1974…and it’s no wonder. For a runt over two hours one had the enchanted experience of being teleported to a world objective this side of over the rainbow. Here is a cornucopia of magical scenes and snippets from MGM’s most radiant musicals. Directed with adroit - if self congratulatory - wit and concision by Jack Haley Jr. (son of Oz’s Tin Man), “That’s Entertainment!” is the sort of blindingly attractive extravaganza that reinforces MGM’s once galvanic mottos of “art for art’s sake” and “more stars than there are in heaven.” At its gala premiere Jack Haley Sr. was heard declaring, “This isn’t nostalgia. This is art.” Rightly so, by 1974 the MGM musical had been stupid for some time and the studio itself was on the verge of a restructuring that would ultimately carve its holdings to garage sale place. But at least in this film such forgotten treasures were resurrected from oblivion to their rightful spot in film history. Variety gave “That’s Entertainment!” a heavenly review, trumpeting, “That while many may ponder the future of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, no one can bellow that it’s had one heck of a past!”

Naturally, MGM objective had to have a sequel. Two years later “That’s Entertainment II” came out. But David Melnick’s follow up was decidedly a let down on several levels. First, it removed the star cameos that so poignantly buttressed the original’s vintage clips. Second, it presented the footage in a seemingly hap-hazard chronology. And finally, it interrupted the musical performances with a showcase from some of the studio’s non-musical performers in a string of disjointed word play that neither enhanced the memory of their recent performances or the film experience that was to be had. Though not nearly as successful as its predecessor, “That’s Entertainment II” was nevertheless a box office titan.

In 1994 MGM once again revisited its vaults for “That’s Entertainment III” the final installment in the series. But by now the experience was vaguely beginning to resemble grave robbing. The modern film’s significant selling feature was that, in addition to showcasing another round of classic performances, it also dug deep into the coffers of outtakes for a series of deleted musical numbers which, until 1994, had either never or rarely been seen. Despite these innovations the final installment to the trilogy was the one most poorly received. Warner’s DVD transfers of all three “That’s Entertainment!” films is a welcomed delight. After years of viewing parts one and two with poorly mastered vintage clips, these newly minted discs appear to have been the benefactors of some digital restoration. Beginning with the new film, there is a determine lack of grain and grit on this transfer that is most becoming. Colors (during the Technicolor clips) are vibrant, rich and deep. B&W images are very crisp, nicely balanced, with an often heavenly gray scale and ample attention to dazzling details. There is only the slightest amount of edge enhancement for a characterize that is very calm. The audio has been remixed and remastered to stereo for all three films. Allotment II seems to suffer from slightly lower disagreement levels overall, but the same review for Share I applies. The most outstanding example of digital mastering comes in Allotment III - a marvelously vibrant array of clips remastered (as they were for the theatrical engagement) in high def that positively glows off the cover. The audio is 5.1 surround and is remarkably aggressive throughout.

Extras include a bonus disc of musical outtakes and extras, audio only catalogue of songs and dances, the novel footage of the LA premiere with all of the ancient time musical stars in attendance and a series of short subjects that collectively obtain like a documentary on the series. There are also the unusual theatrical trailers for each film to be had. In the immortal words of George Gershwin…”who could ask for anything more? ”

While this trilogy of MGM musical tribute films have been available on VHS as a boxed state, the sheer quantity of unforgettable musical highlights showcased fabricate them ‘naturals’ for DVD, with the format’s kindly ’search’ accessibility, and improved portray and sound quality. III (1994) eschews the ’soft-focus’ reach of it’s predecessors, adding a ‘behind-the-scenes’ inspect at the demanding work of creating ‘classic’ routines, and an unflinching acknowledgement of the prejudices of the era, to the mix of musical highlights.

My only quibble is that the musical output of the other major Hollywood studios tends to be downplayed, particularly in THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!, implying that MGM had the ‘corner’ on the market. Certainly, the Warner collection of Busby Berkeley spectaculars of the 30s, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, and the Doris Day musicals, Fox, with Shirley Temple, Alice Faye, and Betty Grable, Columbia (Rita Hayworth), Paramount (Bing Crosby and Bob Hope), and, most significantly, RKO’s classic series of Astaire and Rogers vehicles, all deserve as remarkable recognition and credit for their input to the genre of ‘classic’ musicals. In terms of sheer ’star power’ and overall quality, however, MGM was unmatched.

Whether you grew up loving musicals, or were introduced to the genre through new films like CHICAGO or MOULIN ROUGE!, this collection of highlights should be important viewing!

Has there ever been a more surreal and bizarre opening sequence to any expose ever made in America than that of PEE WEE’S PLAYHOUSE? The Surrealists felt that one of the keys of art lay in our dreams, and the intro to this exhibit seems like a elated nightmare of sorts. The music, Pee Wee’s exclusive vocal interjections, the variety of visual images, the introduction of the exclusive group of inhabitants living in the playhouse, all combine to yelp to the would-be viewer that his was a point to that wasn’t going to go down any path that had been traveled by any previous exhibit.

For five seasons beginning in 1986, this was simply one of the most astonishing shows TV has ever produced. Paul Reubens was astonishing as Pee Wee Herman, literally a child with the appearance of an adult, who was a veritable encyclopedia of irritating habits that kids can rob, with every annoying verbal approach a kid has ever old-fashioned. Armed with a tall group of writers, a stellar cast, and some grand station and character designers, this display did things that no kid’s point to had ever done before or has done sense, though the influence on the more anarchistic line of kid’s cartoons can peaceful be detected. I would be willing to be that the makers of shows like SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS are fans of Pee Wee.

Unfortunately, this all came crashing to an extinguish when a sex scandal caused CBS to pull the display off TV. In fact, before the scandal they had already ceased making recent episodes of the exhibit. But the incident did two things: 1) it caused CBS to quit showing the prove in reruns and 2) killed off any future expend of the Pee Wee character by Reubens. The series has been re-released on video, though it has been out of print for a number of years, and because of the sexual nature of Reubens demise, few networks have been willing to rebroadcast the demonstrate. Until this DVD release, PEE WEE has been more or less unavailable to the public.

Inhabiting Pee Wee’s playhouse were an extraordinarily irregular group of denizens, from Pterri the Pterodactyl to Mr. Kite to Mr. Windows to Frosty Cat and talking chairs, flowers, and fish. Conky the Robot would each week dispense that show’s secret word, a stunt seemed designed to irritate parents’ as noteworthy as possible. One of my celebrated recurring characters was the Salesman, whose appearance at Pee Wee’s door would cause apprehension and disconcerted screaming each week. And how could you report Jambi to someone who hadn’t seen the indicate before? A disembodied genie’s head who each week could solve whatever problems facing either Pee Wee or his friends with those improbable words, “Mekka Lekka Hi-Mekka Hiney Ho!”

I’m elated that these are available now on DVD. A whole generation of kids has passed not vivid what a large thing they missed. Kids who are in high school today have only a vague thought about Pee Wee, though they might know his two movies. For many he was someone whose career ended because he did something very, very awful, though not many seem to know what that was. If this film can be summed up into one word, it’s “Edutainment”. Have it or not, this film is not only immensely sharp, but it is educational as well. All our lives we’ve seen images of pimps in TV shows and movies, dressed up in their purple snakeskin outfits and acting like clowns - but “American Pimp” illustrates what real-life pimps are really like.

Ok, so some of the pimps ARE a bunch of guys dressed up in purple outfits acting like clowns, but this documentary shows the side of “pimpin’” that you’ve never seen. You’ll learn about “the game” and how pimps fetch “knocked” for not keeping tight reins on their “hoes.” You’ll also peek how their girls work day and night making hundreds, even thousands of dollars, and then handing it all over to their pimps without even getting the slightest section in profits.

Why do the girls do this? Why to pimps do what they do? WHAT exactly are pimps? Well seek “American Pimp” and you’ll be educated and entertained like never before on the age-old profession of “pimpin”.

I found Bishop Don Magic Juan the most intresting pimp because
he seemed proud of his success.He even compares his wealth(courtsey of pimping) as “The American Dream”.Which is a VERY intresting conception.I also found it intresting when his mother and sister were featured and they were proud of his success as well.

Juan-like the other pimps featured-has a exclusive mix of charm,wit,self-assureness of dubious effects.You know that these men aren’t to be exactly idolized yet they’re charming and somewhat likeable.
Also great was the montage of the mainstream media’s images of pimps.A lot of which borders on the offensive.
Blaxplotation films such as “Willie Dynamite”,”Superfly”,and
“The Mack” glorified pimping.And rap artists have always adopted pimp tatics in their music and/or image to be frigid.
Again,this is eyebrow raising stuff.

The Hughes Brothers pulled off this documentary well,I must say.
They didn’t rely on tired sterotypes or cartoonish protrayals.
Altough I would’ve liked to have seen more commentary from the female/prostitute’s prespective,”American Pimp” is a very intresting documentary that can’t be missed.
