Perhaps best known for his edifying 1991 film, Un Coeur en Hiver (A Heart in Winter), Claude Sautet’s earlier, crisp black-and-white, 60s gangster film, Classe tous risques (Think All Risks), stars Lino Ventura and Jean-Paul Belmondo (two icons of French cinema), and Sandra Milo. Banned from 1961 to 1968, and based on a unique by José Giovanni, the film has a Jean-Pierre Melville-Bob le Flambeur influence. After pulling off a valorous payroll heist on the streets of Milan (where he has been hiding for roughly a decade), French fugitive gang boss Abel Davos (Ventura) returns to Paris, despite a French death sentence. Before completing this one last job of his career, Davos puts his Italian wife Therese (Simone France) and two sons on a roar to France. Then his bear Milan getaway goes awry, and Abel and his partner in crime, Raymond (Stan Krol), wind up on a boat to Nice. Hunted by the police, Davos’ aged friends send a seemingly inexperienced kid in a loud, tweed jacket named Eric Stark (Jean-Paul Belmondo of Godard’s Breathless) to accompany him assist to Paris. Initially insulted by what he perceives to be an act of dishonor, Abel soon warms up to the kid, who has a determined savoir elegant with the French girls (Milo) . Although Belmondo received all the attention for his performance in Breathless, which was released in 1960–the same year as Sautet’s film, Classe tous risques remains an undiscovered French gem of ganster film that will appeal to anyone who likes French cinema in the tradition of Bob le Flambeur, Le Samourai, Rififi, or Le Cercle Rouge.

Classe Tous Risques (The Ample Risk) is a French gangster movie that doesn’t try for style. That’s why it has style. Because the movie is so underplayed and so matter-of-fact, it becomes more and more enchanting. And because Abel Davos is played by Lino Ventura, we wind up emotionally invested in this taciturn, tough killer who loves his wife and kids, has an encounter with customs agents on the shore arrive Nice at night that neither he nor we interrogate, and who proves fair as willing to shoot a cop or a betrayer with as diminutive emotion as flicking off a bit of lint. We first meet Davos in Italy with his wife and their two limited boys, one about 9 and one 4.

“This man was Abel Davos, sentenced to death in absentia,” we’re told. “On the speed for years, he had watched his resources dwindle, even as his scare kept him on the go. With the Italian police closing in each day, France was again his best bet. Maybe he’d been forgotten.”

Davos was a top gangster in Paris who took care of his friends. That was several years ago. A heist to give him money to return to France goes very wicked. Now he’s hiding out with his two kids. He calls his friends in Paris to assist him out. He and his kids need to salvage from Nice to Paris but the police are hunting him and they’ve dwelling up roadblocks. For Davos’ two best friends, time has passed and they’ve moved on. They don’t want to save themselves at risk, and for what? Obligation gives may to caution. So they hire a young thief, Eric Stark (Jean-Paul Belmondo), to purchase up Davos and the children in an ambulance, then to drive to Paris with Davos heavily bandaged and the children hidden. We’re on a walk where Davos’ options are increasingly petite, where he must derive ways to have his children cared for, where he realizes there are no more ties of friendship, where betrayal seems likely, and where quite possibly his only friend left is Eric Stark.

This somewhat cynical movie works so well because it does its job without fussing about. There are no trench coats with pulled-up collars, no toying with the melodrama of the gangster code so many French directors have loved. Classe tous Risques gives us Abel Davos, a man who once was somebody, who now is sliding down to be nobody, and who reacts with violence and resignation.

Lino Ventura dominates the movie, yet when he is paired with Jean-Paul Belmondo a intriguing chemistry happens. Ventura as Davos is grim and disturbed about caring for his sons. He is humiliated by his position. He is a tough man who sees killing someone, if needed, as unprejudiced allotment of the business he’s in. Belmondo as the young thief who initially is sent to be an expendable driver and winds up being a friend to count on, provides the brightness that keeps the movie from being objective one more straggle down the elevator. Ritual is an in depth ogle of a successful but dysfunctional shadowy family. It shows what can happen when favoritism is allowed to fester in a family and the resultant sibling rivalry. Especially when there is either a perceived or true wide diaparity between the talents of the siblings. The acting is absolutely valid. I recommend it highly. It should be in everyone’s video library. No drugs or violence, at least not the garden variety. However, there was a fatal editing error in judgement. Be forewarned; there is a thirty second scene that could have and probably should have been edited out. The movie would have lost nothing, but it would have gained a grand wider audience. This movie is hard to bag for that reason. The inclusion of the scene has given this movie an unrated rating. It could even be rated X. What a pity. Such fantastic acting. The best that I have seen….ever! for an acting ensemble. I have seen it at least eight times. I can’t catch enough of it. Glance it!!!!

I watched this interesting while finishing my book and couldn’t really gain the meaning gradual it. I seek a second time with no distractions and I was very impressed by this movie. I have to say that I wasn’t really a fan of the brother and sister doing the scandalous, but overall, it was a marvelous movie. I also agree with a previous viewer when they stated that that sibling incest could have been left out and the movie would have quiet remained a substantial movie.

The product that I received from ordering this item does not match the description. There are no puppets on this disk, the description must be a generic one. My daughter did indulge in the episodes though.

I purchased this video along with others for my twin 2 year passe daughters to bring with them to Disney. I knew the television down there would not preserve them occupied so that I could cook meals. They watched it over and over again rotating with their other favorites. If you child loves Cailou they will clear cherish this video.

Previously difficult to see, director Nelson Pereira dos Santos’s tale of cannibalism is renowned for its sympathetic view of natives and critiqu of colonialism. As proof, the extras include interviews with a Columbia film critic, Richard Pena, and a Krenak tribe member, Ailton, both of whom praise the movie for its respectful take on controversial subject matter. I watched this tape a few weeks before I saw the loyal explain in Bloomington, and although the two were somewhat different, both were WELL worth the time and money spent. I was a itsy-bitsy alarmed when I first heard about the production, “A Drum Corps point to on an auditorium stage? Riiight.” But, being a fan I went ahead and gave it a chance unprejudiced to gawk. Almost needless to say, I was blown away. The reveal on the video was a work of creative genius. My hat is off once again to Jim Mason and Bill Cook for their ever-outstanding work. I recommend this display, video or live to anyone alive to in theatre, music, Drum Corps, marching band, or objective having a blast (pardon the pun) . There is really nothing like this out there, but the closest comparison I can compose would be Stomp (with winds and a guard) or a rotund out DCI expose… An awesome experience!

I fair received my DVD version of Blast! The Point To. If you’ve seen the VHS version (or on PBS, during their fund raisers), then you haven’t SEEN Blast!.

They’ve mixed it in Dolby 5.1, the sound on the DVD is awesome. They were careful about the sound levels, so that the soft parts were soft - the loud parts loud - with no clipping (over loudness) . This release really shows off the DVD’s capabilities.

The describe is Astounding! None of the VHS tape limitations on quality are evident. It is crisp and kindly!

This is a truly homely video. I saw it on PBS. It shows the valid melting of ice on both the northern and southern ends of our planet. The people who made this film truly had courage. There is an element of apprehension watching a man lower himself into a giant hole in the ice hundreds of feet deep. The footage from Greenland was particularly disturbing, showing how holes in the ice are now opening up inland as the ice melts and water pours from under the ice to the sea. The staff of this indicate deserves a lot of credit for the courage they showed in going out and getting this footage for us.

A fairy anecdote position in a French town caught between the opposing armies of the First World War, “King of Hearts” has lost none of its beguiling charm in the 35 years since its recent release, nor has its message grown worn. Alan Bates shines as Charles Plumpick, a simple private in a Scottish regiment and perhaps the only sane man in the abandoned town. But is his world of war and brutality really any saner than the make-believe world conjured up by the escaped inmates of the town lunatic asylum, the only residents Private Plumpick encounters during his reconaissance? It is a point of opinion that depends entirely on one’s perspective. This whimsical, gentle myth challenges the watcher to reexamine what constitutes good madness, unprejudiced as the asylum characters force Pvt. Plumpick, having been to his initial discomfort acclaimed as the King of Hearts, to resolve which role he prefers: king of the fools or fool for King George V? Broca directs his have screenplay with a deft touch and using a stellar cast of mostly French actors. A very young Genevieve Bujold makes one of her earliest appearances in a major describe. Where on earth did this footage approach from, and why has it been missing from this film for so long? Does this DVD version offer a “better” ending than the familiar one? It’s debateable. But it’s certainly tantalizing.

Near the waste of the First World War, Charles Plumpick is dispatched to a French town that has been wired to explode by midnight. His mission is to defuse the explosives. Never mind that he is an expert at raising and training carrier pigeons. He dutifully sets out on his mission, and avoids remove by the Germans by escaping into an insane asylum.

Alan Bates is sterling as the gentle yet dutiful Plumpick. A very young Genevieve Bujold is absolutely fabulous as the innocent Coquelicot. I rarely search for the music in a film, but in The King of Hearts it plays a pivotal role in establishing the mood, and accompanying the action. It is also radiant music in its contain moral.

This could have been an earnest anti-war film heavy-handedly stating its lawful (remember the movie made of Catch-22? ) . The direction, the music, and the performances of all the actors (Alan Bates and Genevieve Bujold are the only names that I stare, but there isn’t a aged performance here), though, bewitch this far above that level and form it a masterpiece that has stood the test of time well.

DVD’S are expensive and it is easey to catch hook when prefer a superior one. There are many edifying Imax films but not all of them are worth the brand. This one and The Living Sea stand out above the rest in my idea. The Adventures in Wild California is another one though it has not been release on DVD that I have seen are impartial wonderful. On the other hand films like Niagrea,Yellowstone and The Expansive Canyon are a gigantic step down. In those films they try to reveal a memoir and it comes off more like amatuer night. When I conception an Imax film I gawk for spectacular images,fun and for it to be educational. The first three films I have mention fit the bill.

Paul Schrader’s Forever Mine tells a not-very-compelling, still-less-credible story of love, betrayal, and retribution. A cabana boy (Joseph Fiennes) at a Florida beach resort falls hard for a gorgeous gust (Gretchen Mol) neglected by her wheeler-dealer husband (Ray Liotta). After a steamy nude scene and a sweet, barefoot date, Fiennes follows her home to New York and declares undying love. Mol, a good Catholic girl who reads Madame Bovary, confesses the affair to Liotta. Being shadier than she realizes, he arranges to have nasty things befall his rival. Cut to 14 years later (though in fact the movie has been shuffling time periods since the beginning): Fiennes, long presumed dead, resurfaces to lend his talents (he’s become a master criminal) to the now thoroughly corrupt Liotta and see what his beloved is up to. Fiennes has a new name, and a scar on one side of his face, so neither recognizes him. You don’t have a problem with that, do you?

Nonrecognition is always a tricky proposition in movies, but Forever Mine’s problems don’t end there. Fiennes, sans Shakespeare in Love beard and Bardlike charisma, doesn’t begin to suggest a guy who’d inspire obsession. His costar’s attempt at creating a soul sister to Emma Bovary is as underacted as it is underwritten, and Liotta’s husband is just a lout, despite a desperate stab at giving him a virtually literary sensitivity regarding his romantic one-upping. You want a spellbinding Schrader movie about outre passion and literary mystery, look up The Comfort of Strangers. –Richard T. Jameson
