If you are an radiant viewer who is looking for a critical and possibly mind expanding movie event then “The Razor’s Edge” is for you. It has remained one of my celebrated films for fifteen years, and I have owned it and replayed it many times. He does not care powerful for his surroundings-his lack of materialism is in marked disagreement to his peers and friends from before, whose dreams are to grow wealthy in the stock market. An early Bohemian. This is truly the best thing this fair actor ever accomplished, and I rate it a strong “10″. This should have won many awards, and should also be considered a right classic; I am disappointed in my fellow man that they so typecast the star that they could not survey what a substantial contribution he made with this misfortune here. Not light fare, and a long film, but one worth seeing.

While Bill Murray might be best known for films like Ghostbusters, he deserves grand greater recognition for his role in The Razor’s Edge; as great for his acting ability as his ability to adapt the script to his current stage presence. While it is a popular of mine, it should be recognized as one of the best films ever made (am I oveselling it? ) .

For those who have read Maugham’s new, the stuffiness and pretense are replaced with life, vibrance, and cinematic scope. This is one of those movies that struts films occasional superiority to the written word. Spacious vistas, poignant staging (the final staircase exit), and again Bill Murray.

The movie retains all that is necessary from the original. Yet somehow, by not taking itself too seriously, Larry Darrel (Murray) is a more effective protagonist and philosopher. At each viewing I’m tempted to coast my cubicle for qualified and go in search of the meaning of life. Now that’s power!

Ultimately, it seems a shame that such worthwhile films as this rep dust while Ghostbusters airs weekly on TBS and the like. Capture the DVD now (even with its shortcomings) . You will at least be entertained by Murray’s wisecracks (and a comical if brief performance from his brother Doyle) . More significantly, movies like this are able to transcend mere entertainment and jabber us something about what it means to be human.

The first adaptation of a John Grisham epic that I’ve really enjoyed, “The Rainmaker”, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, looks at the life of a terrible young Southern lawer, Rudy Baylor(Matt Damon, in a enormous performance) as he battles against an insurance company and it’s staff of lawers(led by Jon Voight) .

Baylor is battling for Donny Ray Dusky, a young man who’s insurance claims have been turned down time and time again; Kelly Riker(Claire Danes), who lives in continuing dread of her abusive husband and Miss Birdie, an older woman who simply wants to hold her money from her greedy offspring.

This is really the best of the Grisham adaptations and I’m fairly determined it’s the hand of director Coppola that has it rising above the rest; the film is crowd-pleasing certain, but it’s also very shining and very well acted, with a lot of rich dialogue and some very challenging and enchanting characters. Danny Devito, as Damon’s abet, has a lot of fun in a grand performance; like in “LA Confidential”, we’re seeing Devito as his absolute peak lately. He’s been picking bigger and especially, powerful better roles lately. Matt Damon’s first major performance in this film is also very well done, yet another in his line of subtle, fabulous performances along with “Courage Under Fire” and “Worthy Will Hunting.” Worthy like Damon’s last film “Rounders”, I also plan his narration in this film was well done and well written(by Michael Herr)

Overall, it’s an superior film, well directed, acted and written. It’s a well-told story by Ford Coppola and it’s highly racy. “The Rainmaker” was one of my picks for the top 10 films of 1997.

The DVD: Picture: Well, where there’s genuine, there’s also terrible. It’s dejected that Paramount did an unsatisfactory job with this disc. Colors are not terribly well defined or vibrant; difference is only fair; the whole disc looks, to my eyes, like an “okay” laserdisc would. There is definitely a noticeable amount of pixelization and some knowing. It makes a point I was talking about with another person a couple of weeks ago all the more apparent to me. I said, “the best DVD material will absolutely blow your mind; at worst, it’ll build you shrug your shoulders and say, ‘well, that’s sort of okay’ “. “The Rainmaker” simply made me shrug my shoulders in dissapointment. It’s probably the least impressive report transfer in my collection of discs, and that’s too terrible since this is really a broad film that deserves a vast disc. In a time where Tristar is making discs that gaze as suited as “Godzilla”, there’s no excuse for a film that’s not terribly traditional like “The Rainmaker” to leer like this. It looked this method on my Panasonic A110. Hopefully, although I highly doubt it, people will have better luck on other players.

Audio:Pretty suited. It’s definitely a dialogue film, backed by a nice, subtle salvage. Both are well recorded and well-behaved to listen to. Nothing terribly mind-blowing. Again, the annoying jam is aloof there; you can not switch the audio during the film, only from the menu. Try during the film and you’re out of luck.

Menus: Very broken-down. The narrate on the front of the box with some simplistic bordering and grand, lifeless buttons.

Extras:Nothing. No 16×9, No Trailer, Not A Thing. Absolutely zero.

Overall: It’s a gargantuan film and if you liked the film as great as I did, it’s worth a capture at some of the very coarse prices found on the internet, but after watching this disc, I would *definitely* not pay stout note for it. If you’re considering it, I’d highly suggest a rental first, unless you like the movie itself as distinguished as I did.

Matt Damon was a relative unknown when he was tapped to play the hero of “The Rainmaker”, based on a current by John Grisham & directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It was a twist of fate that launched Damon’s career and definitely lifted this movie. (Ironically, Matthew McConaughey got his begin the same way- being an unknown cast in a movie based on a Grisham unique.)

The area is a classic David-vs-Goliath story- original out of law school Matt Damon sues an insurance company for denying treatment to a family with cancer. Ultimately Damon triumphs- the honorable cause succees and the system works. Damon is a major talent, as evidenced by his performance in this film. He’s terrorized, unsure of himself, but basically a safe person committed to doing what’s moral.

I wasn’t too impressed by the rest of the cast- Claire Danes is a talented actress but fails to shine here. Danny DeVito is okay as Damon’s law partner, and Jon Voight comes across as a none-too-interesting arrogant villain. The rest of the cast? Nobody stands out- this is Damon’s demonstrate.

What impressed me about “The Rainmaker” was its hard, unflinching portrayal of the honest profession. A lawyer’s life is not glamorous and does not necessarily guarantee a large paycheck. Those swiftly to criticize lawyers ought to recall some law courses before they inaugurate their mouths- the road to becoming a lawyer is rough and a grand commitment of both your time and financial resources. Gregory Peck delivers a substantial performance as an altruistic company owner. Devito is shrewd and irreverant as the corporate raider. The movie gives each of them plenty of cloak time to show his argument, and you are the believe.

The DVD is a great surprise. The wide veil reveals what the cinematographer was going for with the short, stocky Devito strutting across the veil. It’s both droll and adds to the character seeing a itsy-bitsy man who walks like a giant. I saw this movie on my novel Dell LCD monitor and the colors are deep and graceful, with no noticeable dirt on the print: an fine transfer for an obscure movie. While he sits rotting in a prison, he gets a mysterious brand telling of arrangements made for his hurry. He makes favorable on his rush only to rep that his benefactors are the daughter of an American doctor (Lauren Bacall) and a village of Chinese who are less than thrilled with their communist masters. They have arranged to win a ferry boat and want John Wayne to pilot it 300 miles to Hong Kong and consume the entire village with him. The communist gun boats design for hazardous adversaries but navigating the river with a decrepit drag wheeler, no charts and lack of fuel makes the going even more difficult. Taming Lauren Bacall makes all of that easy in comparison.

As usual, John Wayne plays himself in this film. He is a tough, uncompromising man who sets out to do a seemingly impossible task. This time it happens to be in China and aboard a ship. The character does not change but no one expects the Duke to be anyone but himself.

Bacall plays her fragment as a feisty American woman. She is, of course, Wayne’s esteem interest in this film and her strong willed nature seems perfect to clash with Wayne’s beget will of iron. The conflict of wills comes across well. The care for chronicle comes across less well. Smooth, it is an provocative movie.

This is one movie I can observe over and over again. When the boat steams up and starts rolling down the river it’s non-stop adventure. I’ll leave it to others to comment on the film itself, but I do want to warn potential purchasers that the DVD transfer leaves a lot to be desired. The fresh film is 2.35:1; the DVD is 16:9 letter boxed (not anamorphic) so about a third of the film is missing and it is clearly determined in quite a few scenes. The quality of the transfer itself, while not dreadful, is not particularly honorable either.

If you net this video and the other fable relating to this same time (Zulu) you’ll know all about the British and Zulu war in Africa. The trouble begins when Mr. and Mrs. Glass (Stellan Skarsgard, Diane Lane) are appointed legal guardianship of 16-year-old Ruby (Leelee Sobieski) and her 11-year-old brother (Trevor Morgan) after their parents are killed in a car accident. As trusted former neighbors, the Glasses welcome the orphans into their luxurious Malibu home, but the all-glass structure turns into a gilded cage when Mr. Glass’s motivations are revealed to be anything but friendly. With plot-thickening roles for Bruce Dern and Kathy Baker, the film builds considerable suspense before tailspinning into absurdity, and veteran TV director Daniel Sackheim takes full advantage of his prismatic setting and Sobieski’s burgeoning sex appeal. The rickety script by Wesley Strick (echoing his rehash of Cape Fear) eventually veers toward self-parody, at which point The Glass House qualifies as a high-gloss slasher pic. –Jeff Shannon
