Gail O’Grady and Robert Mailhouse star in this Christmas flick. O’Grady plays a widowed mother, who runs a soup kitchen in desperate need of a financial bailout. Coarse and stare, her son enters a contest call “All I Want for Christmas” and he wishes for her a husband. Of course, he wins and the toy company begins a nationwide search for a current hubby.

I’ll finish there, that gives the gist of the station.

There are plenty of reviews here about the movie, so there is no sense in writing another.

This review is about the DVD. I will converse you up front that this DVD looks like a dispute copy off VHS. I have seen the VHS version about 2 times this year and when the title song comes on, the audio fades in and out. Not unpleasant, but you can definitely explore some age in it. The DVD is EXACTLY the same. The sound is of no higher quality.

There is no widescreen, impartial a chunky cover with the same record quality as VHS. It’s not snide, but if you are the type of person who buys DVDs for the profitable represent quality, you are definitely going to be uncomfortable with this.

The movie itself is Qualified, I care for it, but the DVD transfer from VHS isn’t the best.

As for bonus features, you find bios for all of the actors. The wretchedness is, the information included is the same as you can win on the internet movie database (imdb) as well as fan sites. If you have read a aesthetic amount on any of the actors and know their biography fairly well, this DVD offers nothing original.

There are also some brief production notes about where and how this movie was done, and some quotes from the cast and crew.

Again, if you have done any research online and gone to any fan sites or even a space dedicated to John Hughes, you will accumulate nothing unusual here. No interviews, a miniature slow the scenes, some background detail, but in the huge recount, not great else.

Just a forewarning.

I bought the DVD because unlike VHS tapes, a DVD CD doesn’t wear out. But if you peer the VHS version, then the DVD, the quality is the same. DVD is not any better.

So overall, Generous movie, but not a ample transfer. Smooth, if you are a fan, definitely add it to your collection, but if you seize DVDs for the extras, you will be very disappointed with this.

If you graduated from high school in the 1980s and haven’t seen this film, you must have been locked in a cave.

John Hughes delivers the definitive nostalgic teen movie of the Generation X crowd. The cast made up the ’80s “brat pack” with Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall. It’s hard to have while seeing this film that Ringwald and Hall were the only dependable high school customary performers… the others were in their mid to behind 20s during filming.

While new teens may not pick up this as “sophisticated” as over-sexed comedies like “American Pie,” anyone can indulge in factual feelings, teen angst, self doubt and relationships with parents portrayed in this film.

A group of kids sitting for 8 hours in detention on a Saturday none of them will ever forget. While there is injurious language, it’s about the same hurry as what you can hear on “NYPD Blue” on TV. There is no nudity or sex, unprejudiced raw, in your face teen angst.

You discover this group of “losers,” warts and all, and become friends with all of them before the film is over. The DVD doesn’t offer anything other than cast bios and subtitles… which is a disappointment. It would have been sizable to have had some interviews with the cast and gradual the scenes footage. Nonetheless, DVD is noteworthy better than tape and definitely worth the extra $ for a non volitile format.

“Slayers Next” is typically cited as the best season of this fantasy/comedy anime that should assist as a centerpiece to any animation collection. I’ve already gone over the show’s basics on my review of The Slayers - The Complete First Season so I’ll sever to the lope here. While the first season is my celebrated, this is in no plan an harmful outting for Lina and her band of merry misfits. Many unique characters are introduced, all the favorites from season one are relieve, and the storylines continue to balance comedy reminiscent of the Three Stooges with an memoir fantasy universe that seems to live and breathe on it’s enjoy.

This second season expands on that universe and manages to ramp up the tension as Lina Inverse is forced to learn more and more uncertain magics to sustain flow with the chaos-worshipping demons that intend to kill mankind. That’s not to say that our heroine doesn’t obtain plenty of time to fight over food (one of her passions), bewitch on bandits and other pathetic would-be villains (it’s a hobby), and demolish a kingdom or two with her Dragon Slave spell. Her critical nemesis for noteworthy of this season is Martina, a princess displaced by Lina’s aforementioned destruction who worships a monster named Zomoulgustar. Sound like a name an autistic kid would judge up? Welllll….

Martina’s usually poorly though out attempts at revenge provide plenty of comical relief throughout the season, but don’t assume that Gourry gets off the hook. He picks up an admirer of his own; a rogue swordsman who wishes to duel with him. But who has the time with all these apocalypses to avert? But the newcomer most beloved by fans is the mysterious priest Xellos; a character fond of dropping hints at crucial spot points and then, when asked for more specific information, declaring “That…..is a secret” with his pointer finger thrust upward for emphasis and then disappearing.

Who the hell is this Xellos guy? Will Martina ever accept a life? What manner of beast could possibly challenge the powerful Lina Inverse at this point? Will the jokes about Lina’s shrimp breasts ever pause? All questions will be answered and there will be both dungeons and dragons aplenty for fantasy buffs. “Slayers Next” delivers exactly what fans of the first season would want: more of the same. More characters, more action, more madness, more magic, more slapstick, and best of all more Lina Inverse. If you dug season one, have no fear; this is exactly what you’d hope for in a sophomore season.

Slayers NEXT is the second season to the 1995 TV Anime “The Slayers”. Both seasons are based off novels written by Hajime Kanzaka. This season of Slayers is 26 episodes long, like the first one is. In my understanding, it has the perfect balance of comedy/seriousness, and every episode has memorable moments, even the filler episodes are 5 star quality.

This season introduces Xellos, the trickster priest. A well-liked character among many Slayers fans. He has laughable charm with his wacky antics, and at the same time a mysterious motive that will support you wondering what it is he’s really up to.

Watching this kept me wanting more and more, and I didn’t conclude watching until I reached the kill.

Chances are, if you liked season 1, you will like this too. Maybe even more. I recommend this to anyone who likes the fantasy/comedy genres

Much of his advice is common sense: Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, don’t fall for extreme diets, pay attention to the kind of fats you eat, and increase your activity. But he complements these well-known principles with studies and examples, delivered in an entertaining way. The Australian study on fast-food fat he cites will send you speeding away from the local drive-through window, and the cultural observations he shares about the Japanese and French diets may convince you to finally try soy and eat smaller portions less frequntly. “The Secret Life of Words” is directed by Isabel Coixet (”My Life without Me”) . In this serene film Sarah Polley is Hanna silently working at a factory, keeping to herself in her life. One day her boss tells her to select a vacation even though Hanna doesn’t seem to be pleased the concept. Level-headed she travels to a seaside town, where she finds nothing to do. While having a lunch at a local Chinese restaurant, however, she hears about Josef (Tim Robbins), severely burnt victim of a fire at an offshore oil rig.

Hanna volunteers to nurse him and flies to the isolated set where not many things happen. There Hanna cares for Josef, who cannot sight her face, wearing a bandage over his eyes because of injury. Josef keeps talking to Hanna, asking her questions while telling her a few things about him. As the film slowly goes on, Hanna, not the most sociable nurse in the world, unruffled starts to yell her past, which is related to the events that happened in her native country years ago.

Supporting actors include Javier Cámara, Steven Mackintosh, Eddie Marsan, Daniel Mays and Julie Christie, plus cameo of Leonor Watling. Though her mask time is short, Julie Christie is astounding as Inge who cares for Hanna. (Inge’s character is based on the real-life person Denmark-born Dr. Inge Genefke of IRCT.) But the film virtually belongs to the two leading actors, Sarah Polley and Tim Robbins.

Not many “actions” happen during the film which heavily depends on the words the characters content. Some may contemplate the film’s lunge is too dumb and its anecdote slow while others may regain the understated tone critical to the spiritual changes that main characters Hanna and Josef undergo. The poetical and slightly surreal quality of the film (opening and ending voiceovers, for example) will either attract or puzzle viewers.

Sarah Polley’s Hanna uses English with a strong accent. Her acting is incredible as always, but I conception Canadian-born Sarah Polley may not be the best choice for the role of Hanna, whose nationality plays an well-known portion in the film. And probably the character of Josef needs to be more stout for the relations between them to beget fully to the extent the film’s last chapter shows to us.

In “The Secret Life of Words” the “actions” have already happened before the film starts. You slowly arrive to know the nature of the actions or secrets through the words Hanna and Josef recount. Despite its overlong running time, I liked the film for its quietness and subdued arrive, but some may not fancy the film for the very same reason.

It is always a joy to catch a DVD in the videostore that is completely an unknown entity, only to eye upon viewing it that it is a microscopic masterpiece of cinematic art. Such is the case with THE SECRET LIFE OF WORDS, and having seen the film now raises the inquire of how it went unnoticed in the theater release. Though touted on the shroud as an ‘Almodóvar film’, in reality it’s connection to the genius lies in the fact that both Pedro and his brother Agustín Almodóvar were executive producers: the film was written and directed by Spanish artist Isabel Coixet (Paris, je t’aime, Invisibles, My Life Without Me) . It is a minimalist statement about the indomitable human spirit, a narrative that slowly unwinds to convey some of the most hideous aspects of trauma of war and guilt and shame ever written.

Hanna (Sarah Polley, in a phenomenal performance) is a deaf, quiet reclusive young woman working as a line operator in a factory, so married to her meaningless job that her boss insists she win a vacation she deserves. Hanna does as she’s told, and journeys to a seaside station where she hears about a man on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean who is severely burned and needs a nurse. Hanna quietly takes the job, is flown by the doctor (Steven Mackintosh) to the isolated oil rig, populated with only a few men - cook Simon (Javier Cámara of ‘Hable con ella’, ‘La Mala educación, ‘Lucía y el sexo’ etc), oceanographer and workers (Eddie Marsan, Daniel Mays, Dean Lennox Kelly, Danny Cunningham, Emmanuel Idowu) and a captain (Steven Mackintosh), and meets her patient Josef (Tim Robbins) who is temporarily blinded from burns to his corneas, and severely burned on his limbs.

Josef seeks to leer information from Hanna, but Hanna shares nothing about herself, spending her time dressing Josef’s wounds, feeding him and tending to his needs. He slowly reveals his painful past to her (he was burned in an accident in which his best friend was burned to death, the friend whose wife had become Josef’s lover!) . Hanna is treated well by the few men on the isolated rig and learns to eat the exotic foods prepared by Simon, becoming friends with the crew, though at a distance, and gradually Hanna speaks with Josef about herself. In a painful confessional Hanna reveals that she is Bosnian and a survivor of the Balkan war, a shocking time when she and her conclude friend were captured, tortured and raped, leaving Hanna with physical as well as psychic scars and an big feeling of shame that her friend died and she survived. This knowledge bonds Hanna and Josef, but by this point it is time for Josef to be medevaced to a hospital onshore and the two section company. After some time has passed and Josef has recovered, he begins his search for Hanna and the trail and its finale support as a touching destroy to the chronicle.

The cast is uniformly lustrous, including a little role of Hanna’s therapist played convincingly by Julie Christie. The metaphors the sage offers are many, but the most enthralling is an examination of how the human mind deals with survival and shame after trauma. Director Isabel Coixet draws such subtle performances from the entire cast in this very dinky film, proving she is one of the more distinguished artists in film making today. Very Highly Recommended. What the kids say really runs the gamut. Ivanka Trump comes across very level headed, even saying at one point that she couldn’t understand why people treated her differently when she was younger, because the money that got her that type of attention was her parents’, and she wasn’t going to give it to that person. Josiah Hornblower and S.I. Newhouse came across really sympathically, seeming really embarassed about their family’s money. As some of the newpaper reviewers have pointed out, these two seem to want to succeed, despite their parent’s money.

Stephanie Ercklentz and Christina Floyd reach across as a bit frivolous, but not shallow. Cody Franchetti seems to be desperate to sound really radiant, and for the most portion he succeeds, but at times, it seems really forced. Carlo Von Zeitschel and Georgina Bloomberg are only seen for short clips, so it not possible to pick up a really edifying sense of who they are. Von Zeitschel does do a helpful job of playing all European and jaded, but he also seems very nervous about talking on camera.

The most ballyhooed participant was Luke Weil, because he sued Jamie Johnson. He seemed really tremulous and dysfunctional when it comes down to it, like he was going to tumble apart at any moment. Everyone who reviewed this documentary before said he came across as shallow, but to me, he unprejudiced seemed really pathetic. He was the sort of person no one would purchase an interest in if he didn’t have money. Velvet ropes fraction for him, because he is a wealthy person. One wonders if that would happen if he wasn’t. The fraction about his education was also handsome astonishing considering he lives his life on a knife edge, and if for some reason his fortune were to proceed, like from his father getting aroused about him for appearing in a documentary about rich people, he wouldn’t have distinguished to topple encourage on.

Another very exciting thing about this movie was that some of these people — not all of them, if their money were taken away, would really not be all that appealing. The fact they have money makes people pay attention to them, not anything special about them or their personalities.

I don’t personally know any of these people, and it is possible that Johnson, a life long friend of most of these people, chop the clips together to manufacture them reach across as more sympathetic, which they do for the most share.

Overall, I judge this is a very attractive and insightful film. Johnson must be commended for making it, especially in this society, where wealth is so prized and so talked about. This is an even bigger accomplishment given that the design he portrays the rich is that they go in such a tight circle, really not letting anyone “modern” in.

The production however, is really obscene. Maybe it was the filmmaker’s intent to do so, to explain the rich, warts and all. There were parts that I concept could have been refined a dinky bit.

On the surface, this short documentary can be appreciated as nothing more than a peep into a world that few of us will ever know - that of extraordinary, inherited wealth. However, dig a miniature deeper and there are provocative comparisons to be made between the three distinctive “groups” represented here. When comparing the Americans - the wealthy sons vs. the wealthy daughters in the United States, a supposed meritocracy, the boys uniformly seem distinct to “present themselves” in some diagram. They vary from being slightly abashed to extremely apologetic about their money because they’re well aware they haven’t earned it, while the girls (Ivanka Trump being the token exception) honest want to shop, lunch at the country club, dash horses or derive art. Then compare the American boys to the the two Europeans represented. In Europe, where the class system is deeply ingrained and generally current, the boys are shameless and without apologies about their wealth. Not surprising, then, that they reach off as the biggest idiots of the section as well.

Ultimately, however, this film (like all beneficial documentaries) is a ogle of individuals. Meaning that the average viewer will probably extinguish up liking some of these kids while loathing others. Objective like any other group of people. I can’t say that I learned anything earth shattering or even terribly novel here but as a character peep, “Born Rich” is piquant stuff.

And despite the notorious phrase, one comes away with the sense that the rich AREN’T so different after all.

John Travolta is usually advertised as being in this movie, and he is-but if you didn’t know it going in, you would never acquire him out of the group EYELESS DEMON WORSHIPPERS(!!!) .

NOW, you would mediate that with a spot like this, and this level of tricked-out 70’s talent, “Devil’s Rain” Couldn’t miss.

It sucks.

BUT- its suck is such a complete and perfect suck that it actually UN-SUCKS! Robert Persig said that sanity is round, like the globe, and if your nutty-butt keeps going in one direction you will eventually wind up sane.

This movie proves that theory.

In the wake of “Deep Throat”, the Peraino family was swimming in cash and looking for a plan to give it that squeaky shipshape shine. You eye, the Perainos were members of the Columbo family, and unique as it seems to those of us raised from the Eighties onward, porno flicks and the storefront loops that preceded them were very worthy an illegal commodity to effect. So, Louis “Butch” Peraino headed west and decided to launch his enjoy production and distribution house called Bryanston Pictures. Bryanston made quite a name for themselves by distributing material that other studios wouldn’t touch, like “Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein”; the level-headed unavailable-on-DVD “Coonskin”; and their crown jewel, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. A D.A. in Memphis, interested to fabricate a name for himself, indicted Peraino and other members of his family, and soon after their conviction in April 1976, Bryanston’s west skim office closed for superb. A great more detailed version of this memoir is contained in Legs McNeil’s improbable book “The Other Hollywood”, which I can’t recommend strongly enough. So you came here looking for a description of melting satan worshippers and not a history lesson, eh? Well, it’s coming, objective let me achieve The reason for the spiel about Bryanston is that “The Devil’s Rain” objective happens to be one of the last films they handled. And among such stiff competition as “Frankenstein”, probably the strangest.

“TDR” can regain confusing, but the basic fable goes something like this. 300 years ago, Puritans caught wind that there was a group of the devil’s minions in their midst. Now, this was a unusual scene, kittys, seeing as how they were lead by Corbis (Ernest Borgnine in Pilgrim garb) and counted among their number William Shatner. Ol’ Billy’s wife takes Corbis’ ample book pudgy of blood pledges to Lucifer to the Puritan chief, and bam, we’ve got a chubby scale stake burning. Flash forward to the expose day, and either Corbis or his descendant (it’s never made definite) is after that book, and the Preston family that harbors it. Sounds fun, huh? Well, where else can you gaze Shatner crucified upside down? Or Borgnine hamming it up in goat makeup? Heck, “The Devil’s Rain” cornered the market on melting the enemies of God six years before “Raiders of the Lost Ark”!

Anton LeVay was some sort of consultant to the producers, and even makes a cameo during the murky mass. I guess he had a sense of humor. Director Robert Fuest is better known for the two “Dr. Phibes” films he made with Vincent Imprint, and the well-known and commercial reception to this narrate relegated him to television movies. Even so, “TDR” had an impact on the history of fright films well beyond what anyone could have imagined at the time. Check out Shatner’s face after he becomes an eyeless zombie. Stare familiar? That hide would become very, very distinguished a few years hence.

Time to upgrade, folks. Murky Sky makes the previous DVD edition weak. This fresh transfer from the 35mm negative is resplendent by comparison. The extras include an audio commentary with Fuest, which I had a rather difficult time paying attention to, probably because both Fuest and the moderator have very dry, soft British voices. There’s a short black-and-white clip of LeVay performing a marriage ceremony, the film’s trailer, some production stills and a Dismal Sky catalog. Turn off your mind, don’t wonder why the Prestons haven’t simply destroyed the book, and this might beget a kindly beer and popcorn flick. It’s very worthy of the mid-70s, which may be a salubrious or awful thing depending on your particular perspective.

This animated documentary tells in a microcosm the sage of original Africa - which can only be truly understood by looking at each country - and exposes the roots of its fresh anguish.

I watched this film one evening after spending the day reading Hochschild’s “King Leopold’s Ghost.” I was reading quite slowly and underlining in order to maintain the information since I am planning a bound up the Congo river. As I watched the film I recognized one quoted passage after another (archival quotes) which I had read in Hochschild only a few hours before. The numbers of quotes that I recognized were quite amazing. I waited for the credits fully expecting to look Hochschild’s name, but it was not there! Someone wanted me and you and everyone else to judge that they had studied the archives and struggled to made judicious choices of quoted materials (a astronomical job) . Someone didn’t want me or anyone else to know that Hochschild had done their homework for them.

It is particularly galling, in a film that purports to have a suitable core, to pick up that the team making the film stole Hochschild’s work from him and misled their audience in the credits. And in a film about Leopold’s theivery, misuse and misrule of the Congo, no less! What would Joseph Conrad have said!!!!
