Why only three episodes?
While I am thrilled that in 2010 Acorn is giving us an extra release of Midsomer Murders, I am disappointed that the second set of the year only includes three episodes:

Ep. 60 Shot at Dawn (or. broadcast Jan 1, 08)
Ep. 61 Blood Wedding (or. broadcast Jul 6, 08)
Ep. 62 Left For dead (or. broadcast Jul 20, 08)

Which means in the US we are still running two years behind the original broadcast. Still, the consolation is that in Blood Wedding we finally get to see Cully marry her Simon. And as a special treat, there is a guest appearance from Gavin Troy (Barnaby’s original sidekick)! I think the series did loose a little heart and humour with Gavin’s departure and I will be very happy to see this character return, if only for one episode.

A side note: August 19th, 2010 will be John Nettles’ last day of filming on Midsomer Murders. His run as Barnaby will end with episode 82, likely not due in the US until 2013, ghhrr… Reportedly, DS Ben Jones and Dr Bullard are staying on. ITV is mum on who is replacing Nettles, though wild rumours are circulating that it could even possibly be a she, rather then a he…

PS: For those new to this British masterpiece, Midsomer Murders is a long running “who done it”, based on the novels of Caroline Graham, starring John Nettles (of the Bergerac fame) as the unflappable Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby. The series is set in the fictional Misomer County, which comprises of many cosy, rural villages, where wealthy and poor alike seem to do each other in at an average rate of three to four bodies per episode. The series has a worldwide following, not in the least due to the creative and macabre ways in which the MM victims are typically dispatched.

See Midsomer Murders way before anyone else you know
I too have been frustrated that US release of many Brit series lags way behind actual production and British airing. Midsomer Murders and Inspector Lewis are what, 2 or 3 years before you can buy the dvd, though they air in many areas on PBS stations. You can get them all on disc long before general availablity by purchasing them from amazon.co.uk. Yes they are Region 2 discs which will not work in your region 1 player, but a Region FREE player can be bought from Amazon.com (that’s right .com right here in USA) for under $50. Then at Amazon.co.uk a vast array of dvd product (Judge John Deed, Peak Practice, to name a couple and lots more) which we anglophiles and perhaps anglos as well hunger for is available in many cases at a much better price than here and shipping just isn’t that much more. I have a nice stock on hand for when we are between netflix arrivals and when the very latest Midsomer Murders or Inspector Lewis is out.

I have heard that when John Nettles retires from this series that Midsomer Murders will continue with some old cast and a new lead detective. If it can be done as classily as the producers have managed “Lewis” (or “Inspector Lewis” in the USA) as a follow on to Morse then we can have something to look forward to. But who will she be?

MYSTIFYING MURDERS ENOUGH TO LAST A MILLENNIUM
Midsomer Murders has a proven record and will provide any British mystery lover with appealing entertainment. True also for British murder or British crime seekers. This series is at the top of its genre.

Rampant, unstoppable murder in one county, mystifyingly delicious making it comparable to Poirot and Foyle’s War. DCI Barnaby (John Nettles) has taken on the fictional Midsomer County murder abundance, some call it massacre, since 1997 and this set offers more. Multiple killing chaos is the norm in Midsomer. But you’ll be booking a flight to London (filming done in rural hamlets just outside London) to have tea with scones in the green of some village, excitedly waiting for the next bludgeoning murder (always solved).

Regulars lighten the murder storyline with homespun gentleness, some comedy through expressions, statements, and unusual additions to crime scenes.

Show guest stars make episode a fresh and dynamic. With every episode, predicting Who Dun It? is impossible. Just try!

Multiple murders in every episode are a trademark, intended from the very beginning, by the writers/producers to make Midsomer Murders unique even by British standards. No foul language issues, but plenty of good family murder mystery–the murder is almost never seen, just the moments up to the kill, and then of course the body. How many ways can a person be murdered? Midsomer keeps finding new ones. Part of the humor, actually, is the excessive number of murders in a lovely rural/village setting that could count dastardly deaths per sq. ft. But the delightful setting, sets, scenic environment is enticing, drawing you into enjoyment of yet another murder. The set is comparable to “Foyles War: Series 1-5 Dunkirk to VE-Day” (see my review) with comedy, scenery, and murder spoof replacing the home-front history famous in Foyle’s murder mysteries.

A Midsomer Murder is like a travelogue, but better. You’ll want to set yourself down in a town green, at a location like Badger’s Wood, and sip tea in quality china, just waiting on a few body parts to drop from the sky. No the writers are much to cleaver for such a simple murder as that. This series was based on books by novelist Caroline Graham, but have gone beyond those book without loosing the flavor in the continuing productions of this series. There are many yet to see the DVD light of day. How will it ever end, if it will? Barnaby discovering his own murder, killed twice? Then who will find justice for him?

The Amazon.com review is totally unfair!! I can’t occupy the sarcasm and vitriol unhurried it!!

Admittedly, this film WAS designed 90% to sell the toys and greeting cards and other material based on the Care Bears. However, of all the engrossing series created during the 80s (and now!) this one actually had something helpful to say. MANY, MANY pleasant things to bid children of the “Material Girl” era: that fancy, caring, loyalty, and friendship were the best things in life to value, and are the most enduring values in this world. The movie was fun, the characters cute, the tale (while slightly thin) was straightforward, and the performances were astronomical.

If someone wanted to acquire out more about the first Care Bears Movie (there were two more made), they wouldn’t gain a honest feeling of what the movie is about by reading your review. That, to me, is a disservice!

I give this movie 4 stars. Since I’m a total Care Bears fan, I would normally give it 5 stars; but to be handsome, it is a “commercial” movie. Thus, 4 stars, but considerable admire to the movie anyway. If you (as a shopper) are looking at purchasing the Care Bears Movie for the first time, I would rent it from your local video/DVD rental store (or from Netflix) first before making any decisions. I believe you’ll like it, though!

Okay, whether you agree or disagree about the commercialism of this movie, most people (with the exception of Amazon’s critic, apparently) would impart you that it is fair a insensible faded helpful thing for kids to discover! I watched the Care Bears, including this movie and the cartoon TV explain, when I was a kid, and it re-iterated the things that my mom spent so remarkable time trying to sing me…that there is fine in the world, that caring and being a friend is more necessary than always having/doing things ‘your believe way’, and that worship is everything. These are values that have unfortunately gone missing in most of the cartoons today. Luckily, this movie is detached around for my occupy children to stare and learn from, so they can peaceful come by proper wholesome entertainment with a distinct message.

Was it commercialism? Yes. But then again, so are 99% of the cartoons out there today. Seriously…who can name one cartoon on TV today, or one enormous hit movie at the theatres, that doesn’t have it’s gain line of toys, lunchboxes, sleeping bags, sheets, stuffed animals, etc? And yes, those toys do reach out, often several months, before the movie.

The point is this: Who cares if there was commercialism enthusiastic? There is in most things in life, but at least The Care Bears Movie also sends a loving, determined, caring message to kids!

This is the actual footage from the Hangin’ Tough Live that was on VHS. If you enjoyed your VHS and no longer inspect it because you don’t have a VCR, this DVD is a must-buy! Re-live your teenage years by sitting and watching this DVD with your girlfriends! We did and had a blast!

The Recent Kids on the Block made a comeback in 2008, they have made this one of the best experiences ever for fans across the world. The day this went on sale I ordered it, this past year I have been reliving my youth and this DVD added to my collection of leisurely 80’s NKOTB memorabilia.

Based on an unforgettable 1973 movie, the series focused on the lives of students struggling through law school at a prestigious university.

The series lasted only one season on CBS with 22 episodes, from 1978 to 1979, and this boxed station from Yowl!Factory collects those episodes, which revolves around the students’ first year of ‘trial’ and tribulatios.

PBS reran the series then the cable channel Showtime revived the series in 1983, where it lasted for three more seasons.

The series centered around student James T. Hart, a core cast of fellow-students, and one truly dominant force of nature in the design of a legendary law professor, Charles W. Kingsfield Jr., played beyond iconic perfection by the astonishing John Houseman.

Houseman had starred as Kingsfield in the movie version, then unbelievably reprised the role on the microscopic conceal to the delight of his fans. Sadly, Houseman died a year after the Showtime incarnation of the series ended.

Hart, played by James Stephens in the series, and by Timothy Bottoms in the movie, is a hard-working student from Minnesota whose background ill prepares him for the rough and descend of law school.

Hart is utterly petrified and fascinated by Kingsfield, who challenges his students so vigorously that he has become a chronicle in his have time, and his classes are both loathed and cherished.

The professor, the undisputed authority on contract law, becomes an unwilling and unknowing mentor to Hart, who decides he will do anything he can to meet and exceed the expectations of the master legal-eagle. By the time the series ends on Showtime, Hart graduates.

While the series explores the relationship between Hart and his co-students who execute a glimpse group, it is Houseman’s Kingsfield that inhabits every rush of the expose, even when he is not on conceal - a lasting testimony to the actor’s skill.

Stephens and Bottoms have devoted fan bases who argue one actor’s portrayal is the quintessential Hart. For me, Stephens brings a sensitivity and likeability that Bottoms does not. Of course, Stephens had many episodes to imbue the character with his style.

In the series, Hart’s best friend, Franklin Ford III, is played by Tom Fitzsimmons, while actors Willis Bell, James Keane, and Betty Harford, (Kingsfield’s secretary) round out the core cast in the first season, which aired on CBS.

The joy of the present was the colossal scripts which managed to combine humor, tension and fantastic stress caused by constant, rigorous gawk, with friendship and deeper, philosophical issues brought up by the honest topics they were learning. In short, it was one of the best cancelled TV series EVER!

As others have written, “The Paper Prance” is one of the best, most compelling dramas ever made for television. A significant darling when it first aired, it was really too shining and did not gain a astronomical enough audience on CBS. However, it was so grand that it objective would not die quietly. After gaining more kudos in reruns on PBS, Showtime brought it benefit several years later luring benefit the key players from the first season to continue in “The Paper Stride - The Second Year” and “The Paper Drag - The Third Year.” Showtime finished its accelerate with a final six episodes called “The Paper Spin - The Graduation Year” which was actually a continuation of the third year. It maintained an wonderful level of excellence from the first season through its Showtime years.

Based on the original by John Jay Osborn Jr. The Paper Scuttle and the motion narrate of the book The Paper Lope, the television series far surpasses the quality of its predecessors. It reminds me in some ways of “M*A*S*H,” the series, which was far and away better than its current book and movie. Unfortunately, unlike “M*A*S*H,” once Showtime finished “The Paper Whisk” more than 20 years ago, it has been rarely seen since. It is so well written, so well acted, so compelling and dramatic, that it deserves a chance to bag a recent audience on DVD.

If you watched it in its day and liked it, please prefer a copy and note the distributor (Cry Factory) that there is a market for the rest of the series. Even if you did not stare it when it first aired, but you delight in shining, thought-provoking drama, give it a try and spread the word. You don’t have to be a lawyer or law student to identify with the characters and the daily events in which they collect themselves. It’s a fable and television series for all of us.

The Bicentennial is in effect, Jaws tops the box office, and amateur photographer Hunt (Paul Rudd) and friends carry on family tradition as clam diggers. Frankie (Ken Marino) has a wife (Sarah Paulson) and kids. Hunt, Jack (Ron Eldard), and Cons (Josh Hamilton) don’t. They work hard, they party hard (Cons also serves as the local dealer). Things are about to change, though, as a corporation called South Shell threatens their Long Island livelihood by limiting the area in which they ply their trade. Then, Hunt loses his father, who was out clamming when his heart gave out. Now it’s just him, his dispirited buddies, his diminishing career, and his newly divorced sister, Gina (Maura Tierney). Clearly, the time has come to make some tough decisions. Fortunately, Diggers isn’t downbeat, but nor is it a comedy, despite the participation of part-time comedians, like Rudd (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Tierney (NewsRadio). There’s a little humor mixed in with the drama, as in Hunt’s flirtation with Manhattan visitor Zoe (Lauren Ambrose), but it’s mostly a fond look back at a vanishing way of life. Directed by Katherine Dieckmann (A Good Baby) and written by Marino (MTV’s The State), an actual digger’s son, it’s the kind of small-scale indie that could easily get overlooked, but deserves to be seen–not because it offers something startlingly original, but because it offers something heartfelt and unexpectedly moving. –Kathleen C. It’s large. One of the few shows willing to push the envelope and level-headed acquire integrity and stutter an great fair message. Seriously, though, this indicate is awesome - it’s witty and always novel, and I’ve never seen an episode that dragged, if anything they may have assign in too many jokes. Well having The Terminitor series on DVD and loving them and having recently upgraded to a blu-ray player I decided to retract the tumble and upgrade my collection to high definition blu-ray format.

Boy, what a mistake that was.

Picture quality is Abominable - well dreadful for blu-ray anyway. They’ve taken the same standard definition source as the DVD and upscaled it for blu-ray - but it’s unruffled standard definition. Only the menu is in High Definition, the movie is not. I tested my DVD version upscaled against the blu-ray edition and found them identical - if anything the DVD came out slightly on top.

It also only contains 2 extras - the special effects making of and the retrospective - nothing else. My DVD edition contains over a dozen extras.

My verdict if you’re thinking of buying The Terminator in blu-ray and you have an upscaling DVD/BD player - forget it. Stick with the DVD version instead, characterize is the same and it has more extras. It’s cheaper too.

Maybe one day this amazing movie will receive the treatment it deserves and be digitally remastered and have it’s frames scanned with a high definition camera - but until then sit on your DVD’s and wait.

The recent “Terminator” is arguably the greatest sci-fi/action film ever, and the Special Edition DVD finally does this classic film justice. Many people behold at the sequel as the better of the two, but remember, Cameron was given a sizable budget for T2. He was forced to film “The Terminator” for less than $6 million. If you’re like me, you could write enough about this movie to enjoy an encyclopedia, but I’ll try to give impartial a breif dwelling description for those who have yet to peek it.

In the future, SkyNET, the supercomputer in control of all military power, decides that humans must be destroyed and begins a massive nuclear war that destroys most of the population. The survivors do a resistance agains the computer and its mechanical army, and eventually defeat it, thanks to their leader John Connor. In a final danger to get, the computer sends a Terminator aid in time to ruin John’s mother, Sarah, before he is born. The humans send wait on a lone soilder, Kyle Reese, to protect Sarah from the seemingly unstoppable cyborg.

When the movie was originally filmed, the soundtrack was recorded in mono, which sounded corrupt on the modern DVD release of the Terminator. But here you can regain a newly recorded soundtrack, with the unusual soundtrack remixed along with unusual gun and explosion sound effects. Most of the current sounds are very wintry (esp. the HK entrance in the first scene), and the original gun effects are kindly for the most fraction. Only in a few instances are the current sounds a runt outmoded. Fortunately the DVD also sports the novel mono soundtrack for when you want to perceive the new verion.

Next to the film itself, the best fraction of this DVD is the Special Features, most of which were unavailable before. There are two Terminator documentaries, which have cast and crew interviews and tedious the scene footage of the recent filming of the Terminator, very chilly stuff for die hards. Also featured are deleted scenes from the fresh film, which offer a deeper see into the Terminator mythology, and shows different sides of some characters which you wouldn’t discover in the current. Also in the special features are all the modern storyboards for the film and hundreds more photos of the sets, actors and sketches from the unique production. Simply establish, for die hard Terminator fans, your wait is over. Terminator: Special Edition is a godsend.

I remember being mesmerized by Bambi at the drive in as a kid in the early 70’s, and then again on TV but, what a fabulous restoration.

I have to thank Amazon.com for providing this before the real release date and I was amazed at the restoration. I am not going to review the chronicle as it is a classic and most know what it is about. I will review the repackaging and upgrade of the classic. The unusual DVD provides extra outtakes that haven’t been seen before and the recent coloration is unbelievable. Gone is the sort of dismal non crisp colors and in its set are improbable lustrous colors.

Fantastic redo! If you have kids they will worship this updated version. If you honest like Disney Classics than you will also want to possess this one.

On one level, “Bambi” is objective a miniature, engaging film, unprejudiced under 70 minutes, that tells the epic of an orphaned deer growing up. Just? And an acorn is fair a nut.

“Bambi” was made in 1942, but is smooth impressive in its animation, even in comparison to the computer-generated graphics of today. The colors are so lush, that you want to freeze some of the frames and hang them up on your wall. The beauty of Nature is captured here as well as in any film, absorbing or not.

“Bambi” is the legend of one deer, but it is also a case peer in the very basics of life: parental worship, loss and inconvenience, friendship, loyalty, balancing risk and need, growing toward independence, being at one and in harmony with Nature, and romantic worship. It is a tiny film that covers more ground than many chronicle, megabuck productions.

“Bambi” did something else significant: for many, it altered people’s notion of deer and their relationship to Man. I recently read a discover that looked at this dispute, and one finding is that two things decreased markedly after the release of “Bambi”: involvement in deer-hunting, and the value people in general state on deer-hunting.

Sometimes, in simplicity, there is perfection.

Like Moliere, which was released in theaters around the same time, Becoming Jane isn’t a conventional biopic. Instead, Julian Jarrold (White Teeth) expands on events from Jane Austen’s life that may have shaped her fiction. To his credit, he doesn’t stray too far from the facts. In 1795, 20-year-old Jane (Anne Hathaway with believable British accent) is an aspiring author. Her parents (Julie Walters and James Cromwell) married for love, and money is tight. They hope to see their youngest daughter make a more lucrative match, and there’s a besotted local, Mr. Wisley (Laurence Fox, son of actor James Fox), who would be happy to oblige. Unfortunately, Jane isn’t interested. Then, she meets brash law student Tom (The Last King of Scotland’s James McAvoy), while he’s staying with relatives in rural Hampshire. As in many Austen novels, it isn’t love at first sight–but rather irritation. Just as affection begins to bloom, Tom has to return to London, and Wisley, whose financial prospects are superior, proposes. To complicate matters, Tom’s uncle (Ian Richardson in his final performance) disapproves of the outspoken young lady just as much as Wisley’s aunt (Maggie Smith, lending the proceedings some subtle humor). Had Austen penned the script, Tom and Wisley would be combined into one person, but life doesn’t work that way–and nor does Becoming Jane. Though Jarrold’s effort may not be as swoon-worthy as Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice, it remains tru to the spirit of the author’s work. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
