I wondered what to quiz from this DVD. I wasn’t overly confident that it would be worthwhile but was pleasantly surprised with what I found. The production quality is on par with that of the Beatles Anthology discs. Pete Best and others who were there (including Astrid Kircherr, Klaus Voorman, Cynthia Lennon, & Neil Aspinal) reminisce about the early days of the Beatles in Liverpool and Hamburg. Pete tells about his experiences during the early years of the band from it’s formation up until the time of his firing. Best seems to have a very suitable memory and appears to delight in telling stories about those early days. Best is probably the only person left to give an proper first hand fable of those formative years of the group (George and John are gone, Ringo wasn’t there, and Sir Paul is known to fudge Beatles history to better suit his desired image) . Best does not seem bitter at all, especially after all the years that have passed. One of the major points he (and others) apparently want to acquire across in this film is that he was not fired because he wasn’t a top-notch enough drummer. It seems that even now Pete doesn’t really know why he was fired. He tells how it happened but apparently wasn’t really ever given a reason and that does serene bother him. All in all a very involving documentary and a must have for any serious Beatles fan’s DVD library. I never really gave grand view to Pete Best before watching this. Most Beatle histories tend to marginalize Best, but this DVD gives him a chance to plot the picture straight that he was there and he did play a sure role in the early Beatles rise to fame.

I had seen Pete Best on tv several times over the years and he always seemed to be insecure and nervous, without mighty spark. I didn’t know whether to attribute this to his natural personality or to his sense of being beaten down by life, to have been so cessation and lost one of the greatest prizes of our generation - membership in The Beatles. So I didn’t examine powerful from this documentary. Boy was I surprised. Instead of being a self-serving allotment of drivel, it filled in some missing details in the early career of The Beatles, their skiffle days (represented by a poignant rendering of an mature song by Ken Brown) and Hamburg. I loved the interviews with Klaus, Astrid, Cynthia, Neil and the other Liverpool regulars. They added color to what has been rehashed over and over again in books. There was a share of footage of Pete from the archaic days and I was surprised to leer he was not only fine looking but had a sparkle in his witness. He certainly would have attracted my attention if I had been a Liverpool teenager. Yet he didn’t really fit with the other three. Ringo shared the wit and the cheekiness of the other three that made the Beatles so endearing to their audiences, especially in America. Pete seems to have let go of the bitterness of what happened. This DVD is certainly worthwhile for those alive to in Beatles history.

Osmosis Jones is one of those movies you almost feel like you have to apologize for liking. Well, forget about it, because this is a very amusing and downright though-provoking movie with no class whatsoever!

The scenes bounce between live acting and burly animation, positive by whether we are outside or inside the body of Frank. The casting for this laughable and unique movie was expertly chosen for both live and jabber roles.

Live, we have Bill Murray as Frank, in his most disgusting character since Caddyshack. Chris Elliot plays his brother Bob, and manages to challenge Murray in the “disgusting slob” category. Murray eats a hard boiled egg that landed in monkey doodoo, and thus introduces Thrax into his body, a red-death virus certain to occupy over Frank and end him. (voiced by Laurence Fishburne)

Inside of Frank, we go to the animation where Chris Rock is the direct of our hero, a white blood cell named Osmosis Jones. There is unbiased enough irascible stuff in there to nasty them out - which they treasure! As a teacher, I honest appreciate the entire analogy of the epic - every small cell in the body is working toward the same goal - keeping Frank alive. The kids like it, and I also delight in it. There are some moments in there that are more adult humor that the kids don’t even win, so I’m able to accept a laugh out of it.

Here is another pleasing collection of Crown International Pictures’ drive-in movie madness. You secure eight classic b-movies all lovingly restored using recent film transfers (with the exception of The Babysitter, which was mastered from PAL tape) . As you can probably assert, this film has fun toying with the classic formula of the Disney fairy legend, the most prominent being “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” So many of its station devices are spoofed in “Enchanted,” from the adore struck young maiden to the evil queen to the bold prince. I mediate myself something of a Val Lewton devotee as I’ve seen all his films dozens of times and I suspect I’ve read unbiased about every book and article that’s ever been published on the enormous producer. I was very aroused to learn last year that Martin Scorsese (of all people!) was producing a documentary on Lewton shiny the quality and passion he would bring to the project. Well, I watched it last night and I’m joyful to say I wasn’t disappointed. This is a very loving and informed documentary that is as captivating to glance as it is keen to hear. Credit must be shared between Scorsese (the producer and narrator) and the sincere writer and director of the film, Kent Jones, who covers Lewton’s life and all his films while at the same time uncovering many facts and photos that I’ve not encountered before. This is not a talking head documentary and all comments are kept brief and were obviously carefully selected as each comment is substantive and specific. Scorsese is the very passionate narrator and you know while he may not have written his text, he obviously agrees with every word. My only complaint about this documentary is that it’s too short - at least for me. I credit Jones and Scorsese for keeping things curious but I wish there had been time for more commentary on some of Lewton’s lesser known films. The fact that “Youth Runs Wild” and “Mademoiselle Fifi” are mentioned at all is further tribute to Jones’s and Scorsese’s devotion to the topic. Special attention is given to those films that I suspect are particular favorites of Jones and Scorsese including my celebrated, “Curse of the Cat People”. How astounding that they were able to track down Ann Carter Newton and how amazingly youthful she peaceful looks. Again, I wish there had been more of her commentary provided. So, it’s clear I’m very involved about this film and I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone involved in Lewton or American cinema during the war years. Those who already have the Warner’s Val Lewton residence can hold this documentary separately while others can rob it included with the situation of nine Lewton anxiety films, which also contains a very splendid documentary that is more of the talking-head variety but well done nevertheless. One final comment on the Lewton films themselves - if the DVD transfers traditional in the box status are any indication to go by, several of the films appear to be in desperate need of restoration. I hope Warners can be persuaded to restore these films and then release them on Blue-Ray discs. I’d grasp the station all over again if it meant getting higher quality copies. Who wouldn’t?

This is a pretty production covering Val Lewton’s life and career as a producer through a amazing selection of stills and film scenes. “Enchanted” begins in an fascinating land named Andalasia, with a young girl named Giselle (Amy Adams) meeting the prince of her dreams, Prince Edward (James Marsden) and preparing to live happily ever after. Andalasia, and titanic parts of the movie are based on a combination of the Disney worlds of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, so of course you can count on the appearance of an inferior stepmother-wicked witch (Susan Sarandon) to establish an kill to all the sorrowful happiness.

As soon as Giselle comes within striking distance of the castle on her wedding day, the witch (disguised as an worn hag) zaps her into another world where “happily ever afters” and honest cherish apparently haven’t existed for years - reveal day Manhattan.

Switching to live action, Giselle tries to understand the Original York plot of mind, and falls into the arms of a McDreamy guy named Robert (I don’t have to lisp you who the actor is, now do I? ) While Giselle begins getting acclimatized and introduces herself to the local wildlife, a rescue party from Andalasia also uses the Manhattan transfer, and soon the streets of Modern York are stormed by a CGI chipmunk, a prince in search of his missing damsel, and a henchman with a laughable accent (Timothy Spall) .

If you’re a fan of fairy tales, and in particular Disney tales, you’ll savor the dinky touches like poisoned apples in the Grand Apple, Beauty & the Beast ballroom dancing and glass slippers, but this updated magical, musical, humorous fairy memoir will be a treat for the whole family.

A certain “YES” for family entertainment, and one you probably should bewitch when it comes out on DVD. Rated: 4.5 stars

What would happen when an keen fairy narrative princess found herself in our physical world? This expect is the basis of “Enchanted,” a Disney film addressing the fairy sage clichés so effectively that it’s practically a parody. The film begins in the challenging world of Andalasia with the opening of a storybook; a voiceover narration says the obligatory, “Once upon a time …” before we’re introduced to Giselle (voiced by Amy Adams), a peasant girl who, of course, lives in a quaint petite cottage in the middle of the woods. As you might ask, she thinks of nothing but finding her one right fancy, going so far as to compose a princely mannequin while singing brightly. To top that off, she’s apt with practically every creature inhabiting the forest, and they all pay her a visit as she sings. When she’s almost eaten by a troll, the dashing Prince Edward (voiced by James Marsden) rescues her, and the two immediately choose to net married.

But Edward’s faulty stepmother–Queen Narissa (voiced by Susan Sarandon) –refuses to give up the throne and vows to terminate the wedding. Disguised as an used hag, she lures Giselle to a magical well and pushes her in. The well is actually a kind of inter-dimensional portal between Andalasia and our world, and according to Narissa, it’s a space, “where there are no happily ever afters.” Giselle emerges from a manhole in the middle of Unique York City. Amidst the confusing, horrible hustle and rush of everyday living–in which people are crude, conniving, and fast-paced–a now-live action Giselle bumps into divorce attorney Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey) and his six-year-old daughter, Morgan (Rachel Covey) . They lift her in, although Robert is more than a cramped anxious about the situation; from his point of conception, a delusional woman in a fluffy white princess dress is roaming the streets of Manhattan. Morgan, on the other hand, is thrilled, believing that a staunch princess has entered her life.

As she prances around with all the grace and joy of the perpetually perky, Giselle gradually learns a few notable things: (1) people in the sincere world don’t rupture out into song for no apparent reason; (2) people don’t like it when their curtains are passe to compose a dress; (3) it isn’t appropriate to call forth birds, rats, and roaches to relieve clean up; and (4) savor is not as simple as meeting one day and marrying the next. Or is it? She and Robert fraction appealing conversations on the nature of relationships, his stance being that they’re incredibly complicated, her stance being that they don’t have to be. Considering his failed marriage and his unusual relationship with a woman named Nancy (Idina Menzel), it’s easy to explore where he’s coming from. Precise life is nowhere approach as simple as life in Andalasia, a station where Giselle is allowed to be naïve and trusting.

As far as Prince Edward is concerned, he follows Giselle into Manhattan and begins his bold search. He’s impartial as naïve about our world–he mistakes a television for a magic mirror and a bus is a contemptible metal beast, and he believes he can unsheathe his sword at will. He also speaks in typical Prince Charming lingo, his words boastful and one-tracked. And great like Giselle, he, too, will shatter into song for no apparent reason. He’s accompanied by a Pip, a chipmunk who has lost his Andalasian ability to exclaim English. Pip constantly tries to warn Edward about Nathaniel (Timothy Spall), Queen Narissa’s sniveling weasel of a henchman. Under the guise of being grand, he does whatever he can to steer Edward in the depraved direction, and most of the time, he succeeds. Will Edward rep Giselle? Will they portion Accurate Love’s Kiss and live happily ever after? Or is her relationship with Robert is more complex than she would like it to be?

As you can probably shriek, this film has fun toying with the classic formula of the Disney fairy narrative, the most prominent being “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” So many of its space devices are spoofed in “Enchanted,” from the cherish struck young maiden to the contemptible queen to the audacious prince. Yes, even the poisoned apple is reused, and I mediate it’s determined which characters are keen in that regard. But there are other elements of parody at work here, not the least of which is music still by Alan Menken. Menken is known for scoring a number of Disney’s films during its tedious twentieth century renaissance: “The Slight Mermaid”; “Beauty and the Beast”; “Aladdin”; “Pocahontas”; “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”; “Hercules.” Given this track describe, I can’t consider of anyone better first-rate for the job.

And then there’s the final fifteen minutes, which features an impressive computer-animated dragon; a anecdote like this always ends with a climactic fight between the hero and the enemy, and the hero is always supposed to rescue the enemy’s captive. But unbiased who is the hero in “Enchanted”? Who is the enemy’s captive? The answers aren’t all that surprising, but they peaceful construct for something arresting. That’s glorious considerable the plan the entire film works–”Enchanted” is a film that’s perfectly aware of what it wants to conclude, and it pokes fun at itself while simultaneously paying homage to the formulas Disney films have followed. Thank goodness it has a sense of humor; this kind of storytelling could only work for so long before starting to derive humorous.

A handsome young aviator named Clay (Dean Cain) makes a forced landing on an isolated island that, over the past hundreds of years, has been invaded by so many different countries the inhabitants speak a mishmash of Spanish, English, and French. There he meets a young boy named Gabriel (Kristian De La Osa), who immediately attaches himself to Clay because his own father disappeared long ago. Unfortunately, this causes a conflict between Clay’s beautiful mother, Mercedes (Talisa Soto), and her fiance, Frank (Migul Sandoval), a hardworking farmer who unhappily observes Mercedes’s attraction to Clay. But even as Gabriel and his mother start to learn more about Clay than they expect, the boy forms a magical friendship with the airplane itself.

The Flight seems simple and predictable at first, but there are surprises in store; the script doesn’t make the obvious choices, and the movie proves emotionally richer than one would expect. Soto in particular gives a subtle and touching performance as the conflicted young mother, and the cast as a whole is sincere and enjoyable. Young children will particularly enjoy it, but their parents may find themselves drawn in as well. –Bret Fetzer
