Film noir master Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1966 2 hr. and 24 min. mob memoir has everything you want to leer in a Melville film: a prison flee sequence, gangland violence, wintry jazz clubs with leggy blondes, Colt .45’s, fedoras, crime bosses putting together crews to pull off large jobs (in this case 1 billion in platinum bars), an intricately planned and executed heist sequence, stakeouts, hideouts, double-crosses, betrayals, brutal interrogations interesting torture, revenge, and, most importantly, memorable characters (on both sides of the law) who live by their bear private codes.

Its very hard to imagine what the careers of Coppola, Scorsese, Friedkin, Woo, and Tarantino (to name honest a handful of Melville’s progeny) would be were it not for the hard-hitting but chilly film noirs of Melville who provided the archetypes and templates for virtually every mob film to follow. But the pleasures of Melville’s films are many and no single filmaker that followed Melville into this genre (that he didn’t earn but that he certainly elevated) exercises his craft with as definite a hand and with as worthy integrity as Melville himself. This is due to the fact that Melville brought to the highly formulaic genre of film noir his experience as a resistance fighter in WWII and so when he puts together a abolish sequence, an interrogation sequence, or any number of sequences interesting men doing battle with their conscience and with each other there is a realism (albeit a highly stylized realism) and an authenticity that is anything but formulaic. His imitators have made tremendous films which can be appreciated and famous for their contain specific merits, but no other filmaker seems to beget this genre and the characters that inhabit it the design Melville does.

In the opening sequence Gustave “Gu” Minda (Lino Ventura: who looks like a faulty between Fellini at 65 & DeNiro at 45) breaks out of prison with the succor of two accomplices. Though a mere 46, “Gu” seems broken-down like an ancient man who can barely muster the energy or will to scale the last wall. The stark austerity of the prison with its formidable concrete walls that stretch high into the sky is like a sizable and dehumanizing labyrinth of stone and living within these walls for so many years seems to have taken the life out of him and old-fashioned him well beyond his years. One of the younger men dies when he falls from one of the walls. Once freed, the other two cruise into the woods and jump on to a appealing screech. Its a thrilling beginning, and we are holding our breath the whole blueprint. Throughout the sequence all we hear are the sounds of the men busily working to conclude each task critical to free themselves, and then, once outside the prison, all we hear are the sounds of their newly liberated feet crunching leaves on the forest floor. We feel their exhileration. The entire sequence is like a highly condensed version of Bresson’s A Man Escaped. And all before the opening credits roll.

With this first masterful sequence we know immediately that we have been delivered into the hands of a master cinematic craftsman. At 2 and a half hours we know its going to be a long meander but we also know that there’s no better director to consume 2 and half hours with.

I bought this film along with Le Doulos. I watched Le Doulos first, and, although savory, it was fairly limited. Le Doulos is an engrossing jazz duet featuring two thinly-imagined players for the most portion and a clever and well-executed status but overall the film didn’t pack remarkable of a punch compared to the one delivered by this fully realized jazz symphony which features a cast of twelve fully realized players who are all given great mask attention and a labyrinthine spot that puts these lives into contact with each other in extremely compelling, and, more often than not, deadly ways.

The fate of the other escapee eventually does figure into the sage and in a profound draw, but this is Gu’s account. Once he finds his procedure relieve to Paris he immediately seeks out his sister Sophie Manouche. In our first see of Manouche we learn that she runs a club and while shes talking to her business partner, Jacques the Lawyer, at the clubs bar three thugs speed in and begin shooting up the situation. Manouche’s bodyguard, Alban, squeezes off a few expertly placed shots to fend them off but not before Jacques takes a bellyful of lead. This brings Inspector Bloc (Paul Meurisse, who will later appear in Melville’s masterpiece Army of Shadows) onto the scene. When Bloc begins asking questions no one’s talking, but Bloc is a cold inspector who knows how to read men as well as evidence and he knows exactly what happened, who did it, and why.

Bloc knows everyone, and he understands the code of silence that governs the underworld. He also knows how these characters operate, their signature moves, as well as what they will do before they do it. Gu may be the most eminent underworld criminal of his day and his name may declare immediate respect, but Bloc’s name is equally respected and equally feared. We know that it is only a matter of time until these two face off. That is unless the unscrupulous Inspector Fardiano (who is not so respectful of the thieves’–or any other–code of honor) doesn’t accept up with Gu first.

Meanwhile, Paul Ricci is busy putting together a team in order to pull off a major heist. Paul Ricci is acting on a tip from “Nevada” (an old-timer who wears murky shades and a stetson and drives a stout dark cadillac, all Melville signatures) who has the inside scoop on exactly when and where an armored truck will be engaging 1 billion in platinum. Paul belongs to the higher class of gangster (the kind who live by an unspoken code of honor) but Paul’s brother Jo belongs to the lower class of gangster (the kind who don’t) . Paul recruits Antoine the Gypsy and Pascal and for a fourth he attempts to hire a frigid blonde pro named Orloff who is the very model of the independent consummate professional that Melville would focus on in his next film, Le Samourai. When Orloff hears that two motorcycle cops must be dispatched he decides the job is too uncertain. Shining that Gu needs a substantial fetch expeditiously so that he can elude the everpresent Bloc and fade once and for all to Miami, Orloff passes the job on to him. Neither Orloff nor Gu trust Paul or his crew but Gu has no choice but to retract the job.

As you would question, the heist sequence, which takes location high in the mountains, is exquisitely choreographed and exquisitely shot by Melville. But, as masterful as this sequence is, its only one of several glowing scenes in this impressive film.

Highly recommended.

DVD extras: Includes archival footage of Jean-Pierre Melville (wearing murky shades) flanked by Lino Ventura and Paul Meurisse sitting at a bar together and answering questions about Le Deuxieme Souffle for a French television program. The interview lasts a mere three minutes but its very frigid to seek and hear Melville impart about the crime genre not getting the respect it deserves from the French and to hear Ventura and Meurisse discuss their parts.

One of the chief merits of this film is having Lino Ventura as star instead of the more glamorous Belmondo or Delon (Melville’s typical choices) . Ventura has no veneer. His hangdog face and stocky body give an authenticity and grittiness to it — even in the midst of the usual Melville iconography of trenchcoats, American cars, and jazz. And, unlike the other two actors, he naturally embodies the fatalism that’s a distinguished portion to this chronicle.

This is probably my common of Melville’s gangster films. It’s a gaze of loyalties (based on a modern by José Giovanni) and it has more depth than his other gangster films. Best of all, it has characters that are bright and estimable — forcing them to catch in battles of wits before they can steal in gunplay.

There’s Blot, the Police Inspector (personified by Paul Meurisse), who possesses a Sherlock Holmesian cleverness. There’s the mysterious Orloff (Pierre Zimmer) whose smooth skill seems to be a precursor to Alain Delon’s role in Melville’s next movie, LE SAMOURAÏ. And even Manouche (Christine Fabrega) is proactive altho her essential purpose is to provide an emotional center for the film.

There are many tense, entertaining episodes in this 2 hr 10 min film which do the tiresome spots that bridge them seem less like unimaginative spots.

My thanks to Criterion for making this magnificent film available. That makes 11 Jean-Pierre Melville films that I’ve seen. 3 to go.

The Criterion DVD has a detailed film commentary by Melville expert Ginette Vincendeau and British film critic Geoff Andrew. Bertrand Tavernier speaks in English of his experiences with Melville. And there’s a short allotment made on Melville at the time of this film’s production.

While “The Seventh Seal,” “Wild Strawberries,” and “Cries and Whispers,” are better known, Ingmar Bergman’s “Trilogy,” variously known as the “Faith Trilogy” or the “Chamber Film” trilogy, is for my money Ingmar Bergman’s supreme achievement, approachable only by “Persona” and “Shame” later that decade. Casting a penetrating view on the zeitgeist of the mid-Twentieth century and the concurrent loss of faith in customary notions of authority and truth, Bergman created some of the most piquant works world cinema and the twentieth century ever produced.

It may be more fashionable now for film followers to say they pick Bresson, Fassbinder, or von Trier–Bergman was so highly praised in the 1960s that it’s almost chic to deride him these days–but “The Trilogy,” particularly the second and third film in the dwelling, remain unparalleled achievements. “Winter Light” and “The Silence” are breathtakingly dramatic, and, despite what you might have heard, not at all contingent upon an interest in Christian theology.

One of my stop friends is a Muslim-raised atheist from Iran, and when I brought up “Winter Light” to him a month or so ago he said: “My God! That’s one of the most intense films I’ve ever seen! You can’t breath while you’re watching it, it’s so grand!” He’s accurate. And despite initial fears that this DVD edition would unprejudiced reissue the previously released censored versions of these films, Criterion has happily gone relieve to Sweden and re-mastered the director’s enjoy, recent cuts of each for this boxed site.

If you settle that you can only be bothered to have only the twenty best movies ever produced on DVDs, this station should count as one of the twenty. Von Trier, Kubrick, Dryer, Bresson, Kiarostami, Kurosawa, Ozu, Fassbinder, Renoir… None of them ever hit the heights Bergman achieved with “The Trilogy.”

I assume Bergman’s work from this period (early 60s) to be among his finest, so I pre-ordered this residence and have now watched all four (not three) DVDs. And I get that The Silence as presented here restores two of the Gunnel Lindblom-Birger Malmsten scenes, parts of which are absent from the Home Vision Cinema video, in case you were wondering.

For the uninitiated, the trilogy is heavy stuff. If you haven’t seen any Bergman, you might want to begin with the Criterion DVD of Wild Strawberries and go on from there. As for myself, I’m always amazed at the consistency of Bergman’s vision, the depth of the performances here, the beauty of the writing and complete mastery of light and sound. The cinematographic compositions, especially in Through a Glass Darkly and The Silence, are frequently awe-inspiring.

The fourth DVD is entitled Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie. It is a five-part documentary filmed by Vilgot Sjöman for Swedish television and it details the making of Winter Light, from beginning to kill. Roughly 50% is made up of interviews with Bergman where he discusses the themes of the film, the challenges of bringing a completed script to the hide, his relationship and working methods with his cast and crew, and his reaction to critics (presumably Swedish) upon the film’s premiere. The other 50% of the documentary shows Bergman and crew at work scouting locations, building the sets, selecting costumes for Ingrid Thulin and Gunnar Björnstrand, blocking, rehearsing and shooting an early scene in the film, later editing another scene, mixing the sound, then screening the finished product. It is an invaluable document for Bergman lovers and film students and I’m tickled to have it in my collection.

But I’m scratching my head over the lack of extras for the three feature films. If Wild Strawberries deserves one commentary, The Silence alone deserves THREE: one for background and notable exegesis, another for lighting and composition, and a third for camera movement, editing and sound. Peter Cowie gives us 10-minute overviews of the films, and they are well-behaved, but not really satisfying. There are American theatrical trailers and a mish-mash gallery of posters for the films from several countries (not Sweden or the Nordic countries, however) .

And if you’re looking for comical relief, there are English-dubbed soundtracks for the films. No serious Bergman admirer will exercise them, but if your Pee-Wee’s Tall Adventure DVD is not readily at hand, try switching the soundtrack to the dubbed version, especially during some of the vast emotional scenes. It’s almost a sacrilege, but their crudeness and ineptitude will provoke laughter.

Almost Famous is the movie Cameron Crowe has been waiting a lifetime to tell. The fictionalization of Crowe’s days as a teenage reporter for Creem and Rolling Stone has all the well-written characters and wonderful “movie moments” that we expect from Crowe (Jerry Maguire), but the film has an intangible something extra–an insider’s touch that will turn the film into the ode to ’70s rock & roll for years to come. We are introduced to Crowe’s alter ego, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), at home, where his progressive mom (Frances McDormand, just superb) has outlawed rock music and sister Anita (Zooey Deschanel) has slipped him LPs that will “set his mind free.” Following the wisdom of Creem’s disheveled editor, Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman in an instant-classic performance), Miller gets on the inside with the up-and-coming band Stillwater (a fictionalized mixture of the Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, and others). A simple visit with the band turns into a three-week, life-altering odyssey into the heyday of American rock. Of the characters he meets on the road, the two most important are groupie extraordinaire Penny Lane (Kate Hudson in a star-making performance) and Stillwater’s enigmatic lead guitarist (Billy Crudup), who keeps stringing Miller along for an interview. From the handwritten credits (done by Crowe) to the bittersweet finale, Crowe’s comedic valentine is an indelible, heartbreaking romance of music, women, and the privilege of youth. –Doug Thomas

In regards to the uneducated 2.35:1 zealot reviewer, as a Director of Photography, I can area unequivocally that 2001 is supposed to be in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. It was shot in 2.20:1. It was not shot in Cinemascope (or anamorphic Panavision), which is 2.35:1. It was shot with straight lenses in Elegant Panavision 70 (65mm negative, 70mm projection print with soundtrack) . Well-kept Panavision 70 is a 2.20:1 aspect ratio format. When you are watching a 70mm print in a theater you are watching 2.20:1, which was never as wide as the anamorphic formats. Learn your aspect ratios.

Not to mention the fact that Kubrick went to the astounding pain of exposing his special effects composite shots as successive passes on the fresh undeveloped 65mm negative (after it being held sometimes in refrigeration for up to a year or more waiting for the next pass) so that all the composite visual elements are first generation on the fresh camera negative, rather than the cheaper and more accepted optical composite dupe negative inserts. Fantastic. That is why it looks as apt as it does. No optical negative generations.

A Lovely Film…and one of the best executions of the 70mm format ever.

A upright Visual Masterpiece.

It took some time for this display to pick up its footing and resolve exactly what it wanted to be. Many expecting it to be very black like “Profiler” or intricately technical like “C.S.I.” gave up on it too soon. The pilot episode offered a lot of background and insight into Jordan Cavanaugh (Jill Hennessey) . She was quick-witted and pleasing, and terribly messed up, alarmed by demons from her childhood. She was also relentless in her pursuit of justice.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crossing Jordan: Season 1! Click Here

Once she left L.A. for Boston, joining the M.E.’s office, she gradually found a home. By the middle of season one, the note knew what it was and many were elated they’d hung around. It became this wonderfully wintry present about a miniature group of people in the medical examiner’s office, Jill Hennessy at its center, who had formed a kind of familial bond as they dealt with crimes and their personal problems. In Jordan’s case, who was searching for her mother’s killer, the two often intertwined.

There was a lot of quirky humor and fun mixed in with the darker elements, making for a tremendous exhibit. There was also a elegant ensemble cast. Miguel Ferrer as Jordan’s boss, Katherine Hahn as the always “glass half plump” Lily, and Jerry O’Connell as Woody, the cop often at odds with Jordan, but sort of loving every runt of it, all brought something to the show’s dynamic. Ken Howard was also expedient as Jordan’s estranged father. But it was really Steve Valentine’s Nigel and Ravi Kapoor’s “Bug” and their interactions with Jordan which made the display special.

They bickered, got in inconvenience, covered for each other, and generally had a life and a family thanks to each other. Crossing Jordan really hit its dash with the two-part “Digger” tale arc. It cemented the explain to its core audience, who stayed from then on. Followed by the very respectable “Blue Christmas” episode, it had finally discovered the perfect mix of crime and quirky humor and personal woes. It was both the murky and the light.

One of the stout things about the prove was the music. An eclectic mix of songs was often conventional for atmosphere, which could accelerate from noir to hilarity in less time than it took to effect a fun reference to Elvis. From the middle of season one to the slay of season two, this was large television. You could never save it in in a nice cramped box, pegging it as this kind of expose or that. It was simply Crossing Jordan.

Here are the episodes for season one: Pilot, The Dawn of a Recent Day, The Ties That Bind, Born to Hasten, You Can’t Go Home Again, Believers, Digger, Piece I, Digger, Share II, Blue Christmas, Contemptible Station, Sinful Time, Blood Relatives, Miracles & Wonders, Four Fathers, Acts of Mercy, Lost and Found, Crime & Punishment, With Honor, For Harry, with Esteem and Squalor, The Gift of Life, Someone to Count On, Secrets & Lies, Secrets & Lies, Portion II

With everything on television seeming the same, Crossing Jordan was different. Many episodes and chronicle lines were interconnected. You never got the bulky anecdote from objective occasionally tuning in for a peak. It required some attention and time. It was what made the display work, and its downfall in later seasons when it tried to fit in more. Seasons one and two were terrific, however, and something a bit different for TV fans to have.

Crossing Jordan is one of the few series that was ended while it composed had stories to notify. The early seasons developed complex characters with complex relationships and the stories kept you engrossed. Sadly, the expose seemed to have fallen off its Network’s radar in the last two seasons and ended with a disappointing episode. The cast was unbelievable and their characters deserved a better closing.

Nope, lol. ^^; (But maybe if we ask nicely, Cut will assign them in future volumes, or include a whole bunch of them on a separate DVD.)

4. Are the episodes in production order?

No, I maintain they are in the order that they aired (in the U.S.) … Stare below for the order…

5. What episodes are included?

DISK 1:

Downtown as Fruits, Eugene’s Bike, The Microscopic Pink Book, Field Jog, Arnold’s Hat, Stoop Kid, Helga’s Makeover, The Faded Building, 6th Grade Girls, The Baseball.

DISK 2: Heat, Snow, Operation Ruthless, The Vacant Lot, The List, Disturbed Thunder, Mugged, Roughin’ It, Door #16, Arnold as Cupid.

DISK 3: Arnold’s Christmas, Beachwarmer, Cold Jerk, Das Subway, Wheezin’ Ed, Tutoring Torvald, Gerald Comes Over, Spelling Bee, Pigeon Man.

DISK 4: Olga Comes Home, Sally’s Comet, Abner Reach Home, The Sewer King, Untrue Horror, World Records, Magic Indicate, 24 hours to live, Arnold’s Valentine.

6. What did it play on?

It plays on my Playstation 2 (but it seems to skip during the lightning parts/scenes– if that’s your only DVD player, you might not want to fetch it, unless you unbiased don’t mind the skippage/slippage XD) .

It works perfectly pretty in my other DVD players tho: An HP Pavilion dv9700 Laptop/Notebook PC (which is a DVD+RW and runs on Windows Vista), my desktop downstairs (which is a Dell 9100, CD/DVD-R and runs on Windows XP) … and our normal DVD player, which is a Toshiba DVD Video play/Video Cassete Recorder SD-V280 ^__^;; That’s all I had to test it on, lol, but it worked on ALL of them!!! So, success! :DDD

OH! The only thing that it didn’t work on is the bottom DVD+-RW drive on my desktop PC… (I have two DVD drives on the desktop– the one on the top works) but I contemplate the bottom one is honest for burning, not for *playing* DVDs. :P (This is to the best of my knowledge.)

—-

Additional comments: WOW, what a crystal-clear relate!! On the computer, it let me engage cloak shots easily. To my seek, it looks better on T.V. than on the monitor, but maybe it’s unbiased my monitor…? Sound quality is worthy. It doesn’t mention anything on the DVD if it’s Dolby Surround Sound or anything, but I don’t know if it needs to. No captioning available. It shows the opening theme/sequence at the beginning of the DVD (like, before “Downtown as Fruits” on Disk 1, for example, and once after all of the episodes are finished (like, after “The Baseball” on Disk 1) .

Let me objective say that “Hey Arnold!” in general deserves a 5/5 (in fact, it deserves an 11,000,000/5, but that’s probably impossible, lol)

If you are shrinking impartial about the episode quality, you shouldn’t be, as this definitely has tremendous quality, Dolby Surround Sound or not (I don’t know how to test that without actually having speakers that work for it) . Impartial don’t inquire any extras, lol.

To Nickelodeon: If you’re listening/looking at this, please give the fans some DVD Extras in the upcoming disks, or all of them on one, titanic disk.

To the Recent Fans: If you guys REALLY want The Jungle Movie, I speed you to steal the HELL out of these DVDs (and/or at iTunes, if you buy) . Never Say Never!!! Unprejudiced as long as we pause as optimistic as our common Football-Shaped Head :DD lols

All in all, I definitely absorb it is worth the money, and I’d consume it again if I had the chance. Instead, I’ll honest wait for my Pre-order of Season 2 to near. :) ) :D

To the Un-awakened, “Weak Fans”: If you haven’t watched “Hey Arnold!” in a very long time (or not at all…), this’d be a favorable station to obtain addicted to, LOL. Hey Arnold! has some of the best humor, entertainment and wit that I’ve ever seen in ages. Some kinds of humor in other shows can come by worn, but Hey Arnold! is as attractive watching it the 100th time or unprejudiced the 1st time. I remember seeing this cartoon when I was younger (I was 9 when it first came out), but I didn’t delight in the humor and the writing enough until last year. I am 23 years worn now! lol! If you haven’t seen it recently, you don’t know what you’re missing!! :D

Just a warning… you might rep as obsessed about HA! as Helga is to Arnold, himself! LOL!!!

Yes, it’s that genuine! T_T!!! <3<3<3 XDD

Thank you so grand, Nickelodeon! I survey forward to the future volumes. Please contemplate finishing “The Jungle Movie” (and “The Pataki’s”? haha ), and accepting Craig Bartlett as a piece of your team again. We would esteem to survey you guys working together again. It’s not unprejudiced me.

Let me know if you guys have any extra questions.

Thanks for reading. ^_~

Case Closed: The Time Bombed Skyscraper is a colossal introduction to the entire series. It is the first of the Case Closed movies and it does a terrific job of offering a movie experience to fans of the TV program as well as standing up as a independent movie experience. The film and the series utilize the same terrific cast of English reveal actors and feature sizable writing throughout.

One of the most tantalizing aspects of Case Closed “Detective Conan” is the duality of the central character. The “MacGuffin” within Case Closed transforms our protagonist into a child, who then must choose a novel identify and accumulate new ways to deny his detective talents. This area design essentially allows Case Closed to gawk one of the central issues of being young, of being a teenager with powerful higher than average intelligence. What a extraordinary conceit for an anime property! Especially when you reflect that this same dynamic applies to the sterotypical anime fan. Every teenager comes up against the struggle of being viewed and judged as a kid while internally they have the motivations and drives which are remarkable more adult than the world is usually willing to acknowlege.

Case Closed explores these dyanmics and surrounds them with unusual mysteries bright esoteric motives and plots. Case Closed is a serious mystery drama that objective happens to be a surpirsingly comic. The Case Closed movie: The Time Bombed Skyscraper, is a extraordinary dwelling to launch your exploration of the world of Case Closed.

That movie was very satisfying. After CN cancelled the reveal I was so angry, but then when the movie came out, I was gay. It was so favorable. Seeing Conan and Rachel together again was substantial. Although the movie did nothing to go the series along, it was unruffled vast to glance some of the stuff that made me appreciate the note. The movie did construct me miss the series however, so if someone from CN is reading this, bring the present serve!!! If you liked the note, you’ll savor the movie.
