“He is very close, listening to every word we say.”
In 1994, Wolfgang Petersen directed the film adaptation of the German novel “Die Unendliche Geschichte”, which was written by Michael Ende (1929-1995). The film/novel is better known in the U.S. with its English title of “The Neverending Story”. It was also the first film that Wolfgang Petersen filmed in English. The story begins with a troubled boy named Bastian (Barret Oliver), who is being raised by his father (Gerald McRaney). An avid reader with an active imagination, Bastian walks into a used bookstore owned by Mr. Koreander (Thomas Hill) and finds a mysterious book that captures his curiosity. Mr. Koreander seemingly doesn’t want to sell the book to him, but Bastian manages to run from the store with book in hand. Bastian takes the book to school with him, where he is tormented by three bullies (Drum Garrett, Darryl Cooksey & Nicholas Gilbert). To avoid the bullies, Bastian finds refuge in a rarely-used attic within the school and begins to read from the book about a magical land called Fantasia. Fantasia is a wonderful place with many unusual characters and is ruled by the Childlike Princess (Tami Stronach), but something terrible is happening to Fantasia as parts of it are disappearing by an unknown force referred to only as “the nothing”. The Childlike Princess calls upon the strongest warrior to find a human child to stop “the nothing”. The warrior, a boy named Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) of a tribe similar to Native Americans, takes the protective signet that the Childlike Princess gives to him and sets off to find a human child, which can only be found beyond the bounds of Fantasia. To his astonishment, as Bastian reads the book and the many adventures, challenges and dangers and Atreyu faces, Bastian slowly begins to realize whom Atreyu and the Childlike Princess are actually seeking.

With imaginative characters, good cinematography & special effects and an endearing & well-written story, “The Neverending Story” is a wonderful and engaging film that not only captures Bastian’s imagination in the story, but the audience’s imagination as well. Other memorable characters in the film include Teeny Weeny (Deep Roy), Night Hob (Tilo Pruckner), Cairon (Moses Gunn), Engywook (Sydney Bromley), Urgl (Patricia Hayes), Falkor (voice of Alan Oppenheimer), Rock Biter, the Racing Snail and the Bat. Overall, I rate “The Neverending Story” with 5 out of 5 stars and very highly recommend it to both young & old alike. It’s a wonderful film that can be watched time and again without becoming tiresome. Sadly, the film’s two sequels (produced in 1990 & 1994) were far less memorable. Other films directed by Wolfgang Petersen include “Das Boot” (1981), “Enemy Mine” (1985), “The Perfect Storm” (2000) and “Troy” (2004).

The Book and Movie can coexist
Like so many other reviewers, I watched this as a small child. My kindergarten teacher just loved it. At the time, I found it horrible, dark and scary. (I was a VERY wimpy movie watcher, Raiders of the Lost Ark sent me into hysterics)

Years later, I decided to bite the bullet and try it again. I found it to be a lovely pure fantasy with (for the time) great special effects and good music. Let’s face it, you either love electronic fantasy scores or you hate them, there’s no real middle ground.

That said, I do think that this movie is too scary for small children, parents should use their own experience and knowledge to decide when their child is ready. (That is what the PG means)

This is the tale of a sensitive child who finds himself being absorbed into the magical book he is reading, called the Neverending Story. (That is where the movie gets its name, the story is different for each person, thus it never ends. There was no ripoff) Dragons, monsters and beautiful images dance in his head as he slowly realizes that the characters in the book are talking to him.

The movie is based on a German novel of the same name by Michael Ende. (a master of surrealist fairy tales for grown ups) Yes, the book is better and yes, the movie only takes the first half of the book. But really, isn’t it better to take the first half mostly intact rather than try to cram in every single scene and totally alienate all viewers? What this book really needs is a miniseries but until then, this movie is great.

Two other questions raised were what was the name Bastion yelled. Moonchild, and it wasn’t his mother’s name in the book (though it is possible if she were a hippy ‘_’) The second question was about the attic. AS the book was written by a German, one may presume that some German schools have attics. Or maybe it was just another fairy tale element added to make the story more surreal. (Attics always seem to figure into fairy tales) either way, it is a relatively small thing to worry about.

This is a very fine example of 80s fantasy, it has a good message and if you or your children are not easily frightened, it is a very good movie on a rainy day. As an owner of 186 books all I can say is see the movie, savour the book.

An answer to the big question…..
Just in case anyone is wondering, as one reviewer did, the name that Bastien yells out the window at the end of the movie is “Moonchild”. My wife happened upon a book version of the story, and it is spelled out there. It is very difficult to understand him in the film, but if you listen carefully, he yells it out in 3 syllables — “Moon—chi—uld!!!” As for the movie, it’s nothing short of a classic. I revisited this movie recently, having not seen it since I was young, when it was my favorite movie. I was struck by some logical inconsistencies (Why is Atreiu the only hope? Aren’t there some grown-up Plains warriors who would fare better? Why can’t he take his bow and arrow??) But that’s the cynical adult in me talking. The movie has such terrific effects and the puppets are incredible. Both the Luck Dragon and the Rock Biter look more real than the digital characters in recent movies.
And as for Bastien’s “wish” at the end of the movie…..it’s exactly what any little boy would want. What a great movie!!!

Randolph Scott’s contributions to the western from 1945-1962 are second to none. His teaming with producer Harry Joe Brown from 1947 produced several wonderful programmers for Columbia up to 1959, many of them directed by solid craftsmen like Ray Enright and Gordon Douglas but the best of them helmed first by the vivid and talented Andre De Toth, then by Budd Boetticher, whose Ranown series of virile, lean chamber works (justifiably acclaimed as petite masterpieces) provided, along with Sam Peckinpah’s Dawdle the High Country an ideal book kill to Scott’s capable career. Reprehensibly, apart from the beautifully restored Paramount/Batjac release of Seven Men from Now, none of the Boetticher-Scott westerns is presently available on DVD.

Columbia have nevertheless released a proper travel of the Scotts, for which we must be thankful. It has certainly been ample to have titles like Man in the Saddle, A Lawless Street, and Hangman’s Knot in the DVD catalogue.

These 2 original Warner Triple Bills are terrific news for the legions of Scott fans: the Warner Scotts, never before surfacing on DVD, gain some of the most delightful entries including the tough Colt 45, some well-directed De Toths like Riding Shotgun and Disclose Over the Plains and the veteran but highly provocative Ample Man Riding. Indeed the taut, suspenseful Riding Shotgun is one of the very best “wrongly accused holed-up in a hostile town” westerns with superbly staged action. Scott is first-rate as always, but Wayne Morris lends worthy wait on as the hapless sheriff caught up in the middle of a conflict he’d rather be out of. I hope Warner issues another set-the sooner the better-that contains some of its remaining Scotts like The Bounty Hunter, Sugarfoot and Westbound (the last film in particular, directed by Boetticher, is a good curiosity) .

Perhaps it has been the success of other, modern Randolph Scott Westerns being released this past year on DVD, but now Warner Brothers is releasing in very reasonably priced triple-headers two 3-film packs of classic Scott Westerns from the 1950s, and it is indeed big news for fans of the classic “itsy-bitsy A” Western, and of Randolph Scott, who in many ways epitomized the Western star of the 1940s and ’50s. These three titles can be purchased together with three more in another place for a pitance. Although the Warner Scotts were not generally advantageous to the Columbia products, they were smooth gracious Westerns and very bewitching, filled with action and the kind of dramatic adventure so treasured by fans of the genre. Several, including COLT.45, FORT WORTH, and RIDING SHOTGUN, are very noble. Here’s hoping that Warner will release CARSON CITY (one of the best from the early 50s), SUGARFOOT, and THE BOUNTY HUNTER…and if they have it, WESTBOUND, one of the seven Budd Boetticher directed Scott films. I’d even bask in seeing the much-maligned SHOOT-OUT AT MEDICINE BEND (with a young James Garner)!

When I was in grade school and we lived in Unique Jersey there was a television space out of Recent York City that would indicate the same movie every afternoon for the entire week. There were two movies that I remember watching five afternoons in a row after school (or maybe it was during the summer) . One was the Steve Reeve’s 1962 film “The Trojan Horse” (”La Troia di Guerra”) and the other was this 1946 comedy from director Mervyn LeRoy starring Claudette Colbert, John Wayne, and Don Defore.

“Without Reservations” is based on the modern “Thanks, God! I’ll Bewitch It From Here” by Jane Allen and Mae Livingston. Colbert plays author Christopher “Kit” Anger who has written a best selling unusual entitled “Here is Tomorrow.” She ends up being a faulty between Ayn Rand, in that her fresh speaks to an idealized type of man, and Margaret Mitchell, in that she cannot secure anybody in Hollywood who could possibly play Ticket Winston, her hero, and has started a nation wide search for an unknown. However, when she hops on a snort to depart from Unique York to Hollywood she gets bumped from her first-class accommodations and has to race coach. She meets two traveling Army aviators, Rusty Thomas (Wayne) and his buddy Dink Watson (DeFore) . Rusty is Price Winston incarnate and Kit thinks he would be perfect for the role. But Rusty has no expend for Hollywood (or “Here is Tomorrow”) so Kit has to pretend she is somebody else and comes up with the last name of Klotch (this raises some eyebrows all around) .

This romantic comedy follows the trio as Kit tries to regain Rusty to Hollywood. Of course she falls for him as they proceed together and she has to withhold scrambling to retain her identity a secret. One of my well-liked scenes is where she goes into a liquor store and scores several bottles by convincing the owner she is Kit Arouse by reciting the portion of her book her is reading. Meanwhile he is convincing her that she really needs to rethink her thought of what a accurate man should be. When he finds out the truth, Rusty is not satisfied and Kit has to fling to bring about the requisite elated ending.

Overall this is a film whose chief virtue is its charm. You quiz Colbert to be able to do romantic comedy, but Wayne’s deftness has to surprise you a bit. Anne Triola steals several scenes as a “beetle” whose path keeps crossing that of the boys. Jack Benny has a nice cameo appearance as himself, seeking an autograph from Christopher Anger, and Miss Louella Parsons, Cary Grant, and Dolores Moran point to up as themselves as well. LeRoy also does something challenging with the final shot, which is of Kit’s bed while we hear the couple reconcile off-camera.

I aloof fetch this movie every time I stumble across it and while it is not a colossal romantic comedy it is unruffled a nice tiny film that you should check out sometime when you stumble across it.

This movie is a hidden classic and has to be one of John Wayne’s more scrumptious roles. It also stars Claudette Colbert and Dan DeFore. You gotta witness this one!

reading the mediocre reviews here at amazon for this anime really had me questioning my take, but i am jubilant to say i really enjoyed my ‘origin’ experience. i honest didn’t behold it thinking “well…this has all been done before”….it was more like “ahhh that’s really cold and a creative contrivance at looking at the future”, and the ‘feel’ of the film is very nice. sorta laid help with no outragous child-tantrum moments most anime’s seem to be plagued with. english negate acting was substantial, music was titanic, the whole thing was objective huge and really really well drawn. very vibrant and dapper colors, textures were favorable. i don’t regret this bewitch at all.

For those of us who long to spy lives of faith portrayed with the grittiness and courage that this life entails and demands, here is the movie we’ve been waiting for. I found the epic immensely titillating - all the more so for it being fair - and the acting, especially that of Frank Rautenbach, particularly favorable. Worth the money for positive.

I fair saw the movie a week ago. It was so challenging that it caused me to judge on my relationship with Jesus. The Bonus materials were equally as well-behaved as the movie. I’ve been a tall follower of the Sherwood Baptist Church movies: Flywheel, Facing the Giants, and Fireproof (which are without request anointed by the Holy Spirit), and this one has moved correct up to the top with them! I continue to pray that all of these movies increase in help and that we witness other lively Christian movies pick root! I unbiased praise God for using such folks at Sherwood and the ones tedious this movie. All of these movies are life-changing because they are based on the Word of God! A moral must gape, along with the other 3 movies I’ve mentioned!

The critique …

Sleepless in Seattle is a brilliantly simple film; that’s what makes it so large. To quote Nora Ephron, “It isn’t a movie about treasure, it’s a movie about fancy in the movies.” To emphasize this point, she incorporates various parallel references to “An Affair to Remember” throughout the film; but, Sleepless is also a movie about our proper romantic fantasies and sentimental ideals about falling in esteem (which, let’s admit it, have been undeniably shaped by what we’ve seen on the silver conceal) . The script is refreshingly candid, yet endearing and Nora Ephron’s direction is impeccable. Ross Malinger, cast as Jonah Baldwin, is the youngest and most essential talent in the film. He does an advantageous job of portraying THE quintessential eight-year-old; he’s impulsive, irritable and thinks he knows it all. (I scream from experience here folks; I currently have a son that age.) He and Tom Hanks arrive together flawlessly as father and son; so successfully in fact, that they would be utterly convincing off cloak. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is equally improbable, which is no limited achievement considering the fact that they rarely appear together in a scene. The supporting cast is brimming with talent and includes Rosie O’Donnell, Bill Pullman, Rita Wilson, Capture Reiner, David Hyde Pierce, and a young Gaby Hoffmann. Families with younger children will savor the film’s integrity; there is very minute nasty language (”God damn it” and ” … it jumpy the shit out of me …” being the worst of it) and no “sexual whisper” to be wary of. All around, this is a winning film. One that I glean myself watching over and over and over again.

The DVD …

For a 10th Anniversary Edition, the special features are few and rather disappointing. You’ve got your basic director commentary, a music video (”When I Topple in Worship” by Celine Dion & Clive Griffin), and a “Appreciate in the Movies” Featurette. This last fraction is approximately 15 minutes long. It features the director, producers,actors and the hosts of Loveline: Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla (why they are included, I don’t know) talking about “Admire in the Movies.” There are some intriguing interview segments with an Empire Situation Building Historian and some very handsome shots of the Fresh York skyline before 9/11; but there’s certainly nothing here to write home about. By far, the most entertaining feature is that you can decide your aspect ratio. (And honestly, how interesting is that? ) This a DVD that you consume for the film alone.

Some people have songs, my husband and I have a movie. We not only met in Seattle, my husband lived next to Lake Union, very discontinuance to where this movie was made. He actually saw them filming scenes from the movie.

You could say the roles were a bit reversed, being I was the one getting over a relationship and he was not really looking at the time. Having lived in Seattle for many years, I especially enjoyed seeing scenes from Pike Dwelling Market and West Seattle.

Rosie O’Donnell adds to the wit with lines like: “You want to be in esteem in a movie.” Tom Hanks gives a sensitive performance as Sam who lost the admire of his life. He and his son Jonah, live on Lake Union. Annie (Meg Ryan) is caught up with plans for her wedding. She is engaged and not looking for fancy. Yet, as it so often happens, adore does appear when you are not looking.

One night Annie hears a radio reveal where Jonah has called in to ask how his father could earn a unique wife. The radio host invites Sam to jabber his heart and Annie literally cries when he says how his wife archaic to produce everything in his life pretty. She makes a connection and starts fantasizing about a man she has never met.

The songs are masterfully woven into the tale and provides a feeling of mature fashioned romance, where destiny draws two lovers to one another. There is also a sense of family and how everyone has needs and desires. Jonah especially wants a mother. Annie and Sam don’t really know what they want, but they do procure what they need. I found that very apt to life.

Wit, chemistry, laugh-out-loud humor and romance, romance, romance! Worth watching at least once a year during the holiday season!

One of the most memorable and eminent characters of the ’50’s Western genre was Steve McQueen’s “Josh Randall”, who spoke softly (with the Southern sigh he cultivated in his early days roaming around the South, particularly Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and carried a Tall Gun, the sawed-off Winchester lever-action rifle then known as the “Mare’s Laig”. I remember the excitement each week eagerly waiting for each episode of this astronomical Western.

It’s release on DVD has been honest too long a wait!

One of my fondest childhood memories was the weekend I spent with my Dad, helping him to hand effect my bear custom-made leather belt rig from scratch for my toy “Mare’s Laig” in time for exercise as share of a Halloween costume when the plastic fresh proved to be a dreadful replica.

With all the second- and third-rate wastage flooding the DVD market lately, it’s really sizable to gaze SOMEBODY bring wait on such a immense actor in this really gigantic Western!

Although Raul Julia is no longer among us, his performance as Archbishop Romero is superlative. Also the presence of poverty and violence evident in San Salvador, is a grand lesson in one man’s danger to rise above the worst in human behavior to the best in worship of neighbor (literally giving his life for the lives of his brothers and sisters in Christ) .

This movie is absolutely fantastic! Raul Julia’s acting is raw and igniting! The Bishop Romero is tested time and time again, and his courage never waivers!!! Its a mountainous testimony to the Catholic faith! The most lively scence in the movie is when the execrable and tyrant urge government discontinuance the church, and Romero goes in to accumulate the Eucharist,the guards shoot the alter preventing him from getting the Eucharist,and Romero leaves. He comes wait on for a second time and picks up all the Eucharist wafers off the floor, and they are shooting at the alter while he is doing this! He leaves, and gets in his car…. A few minutes later he comes benefit puts on his robe and goes into the church and celebrates the Mass, and the guards leave him alone!!!!

He fights for the abominable, and the unpleasant have such respect for him, when he is not afraid; they are not alarmed!

The waste is gloomy because they shoot him while he is saying mass!!! Very murky!!!! But what a life he lived; for the poorest people in EL Salvador!!! After watching the movie it made me devour my Catholic faith and how grateful I am to live in AMerica where I can celebrate my faith without the horror of dying! AMen!

Absolutely incredible!!!!!!!!!

The encounters with the Rock People and the “walking bombs” are also rather bizarre, even by today’s standards. There’s even a topical note to the story line, with a madman bent on genocide; the real-life people of Earth would face just such a threat a few short years later. It’s the slam-bang pace and two-fisted action of Flash Gordon’s adventures that kept audiences spellbound in the ’30s, though, and Flash Gordon Conqurs the Universe certainly gave them their money’s worth. –Jerry Renshaw
