Oliver and Company 20th Anniversary Edition Description:

A timeless classic inspired by Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist, Oliver & Company is a fun-filled, action-packed musical adventure voiced and sung by one of the most talented casts in Disney history!
The film artfully blends lovable characters, cool songs, and action-packed adventure into a contemporary classic. Disney’s hip, high-energy tale begins in the concrete canyons of New York City, where Oliver, an adorable orphaned kitten, is befriended by Dodger, a carefree mutt with a certain street savoir faire. The mischievous little cat is welcomed by Dodger’s pack of pickpocket pooches, including dim-witted Einstein, ravishing Rita, and live-wire Tito. This ragtag family of misfits runs into trouble when the evil mastermind Sykes — aided by his two daunting Dobermans — schemes to kidnap the lonely little rich girl who just adopted Oliver! It’s up to the brave kitten and his newfound friends to race to the rescue in an electrifying chase through the city’s subway system. Boasting five outstanding original songs and the musical talents of Billy Joel, Bette Midler, and Huey Lewis — and overflowing with brilliant animation, Oliver & Company is a modern masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:

Underrated Disney classic gets the DVD treatment3
During the 80’s, the studio hit an artistic, creative, and commercial slump. However, I still find that I quite enjoy Disney’s 80’s films, many of which experimented with computer animation, non-musical storylines, and different source materials. One of my favorite pre-Little Mermaid 80’s Disney films is Oliver and Company. Boasting a soundtrack filled with great songs and a wonderful cast of characters, Oliver and Company finally gets the DVD treatment, albeit a less-than-stellar one.

For one, the transfer is good, but it could be much better and it has a fair amount of grain.

The bonus features could have been much better as well. A few fluff EPK-type featurettes, which are nice, but still fluffy, are sadly enough the meat of the bonuses. Also included, fortunately, are the original trailer, original TV spot, and the 1995 re-release trailer. Two sing-alongs are included as well as two classic Disney short cartoons.

Overall, it’s nice to see Oliver and Company on DVD at last. This is probably the best DVD edition Disney will give it for at least a while, so if you’re considering picking it up, go for it.

Absotively, Posolutely Wonderful!5
Poor, abandoned kitten Oliver is homeless on the streets of 1980s New York City, until he meets a streetwise dog named Dodger. The cool canine takes Oliver under his wing and, with the help of the rest of his all-dog pickpocket gang, begins to teach him how to survive on the wrong side of the law. But when one of their con jobs goes awry, Oliver ends up in the hands of a sweet, lonely, little rich girl named Jenny. Suddenly, Oliver is living the high-life in a Fifth Avenue penthouse, much to the chagrin of Jenny’s prize-winning, pampered poodle, Georgette. When the old gang shows up to rescue Oliver from his ritzy new life, they’re disappointed to find that he wants to stay with Jenny. Their human ringleader, Fagin, however, is more than happy to send Oliver home, if he can get a healthy ransom in the process. Fagin isn’t really a bad guy, he’s just one step above homeless and has a really nasty loan-shark breathing down his neck. Jenny shows up on the dark and dangerous docks to pay Oliver’s ransom and rescue her little kitty, and her sadness is too much for Fagin to take, but loan-shark Sykes has no troubles from a conscience and sees a chance to make even more dirty money. He snatches up Jenny and plans to hold HER for ransom! Suddenly, Oliver, Dodger, Fagin and the gang find themselves on a desperate rescue mission to save Jenny from the ruthless Sykes and his bloodthirsty Doberman Pinschers, Roscoe and Desoto, and even Georgette is getting in on the heroic action!

There’s no doubt about it, Disney’s wonderfully charming classic “Oliver and Company” is one of the most dated animated films you’ll ever see. Of course, that’s a big part of its charm. What could be more “`80s” than 1980s New York City? How about the music of Billy Joel and Huey Lewis? I know they were two favorites of mine in the `80s! Okay, to be honest, Billy Joel and Huey Lewis aside, the `80s is something you look back on and mock rather than view fondly, especially the clothes, and Oliver and Company captures that aspect, along with many others, perfectly. So, it’s dated. Everything is, really. Call it nostalgia. Anywho, as strongly `80s as “Oliver and Company” is, it rises above it! It is simply a great film! That’s something that’s easy to forget if you haven’t seen it in a while. “Oliver and Company” is Disney’s twist on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” and it is an EXCELLENT modernization! All the best characters are there, and the cast is star-studded! The piano man himself, Billy Joel, voices the artful Dodger, a canine so cool he puts Snoopy to shame (we still love ya, Snoopy)! The hilarious Cheech Marin is Tito the Chihuahua, animation alumnus Dom Deluise is Fagin, the divine Bette Midler is one of Disney’s funniest characters as Georgette, Robert Loggia is the excellently slimy villain, Sykes, and a very young Joey Lawrence plays Oliver, just to name a few! With seamlessly incorporated computer animation and painstakingly acquired “dog’s eye view” shots of New York City, “Oliver and Company” was the film that kicked off Disney’s big comeback as an animation heavyweight, though this cute little film was easily forgotten in the wake of Disney’s mega-hit, “The Little Mermaid,” the following year. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying the magic of “Oliver and Company” yourself! Even the soundtrack is terrific, despite that it is powerfully “80s.” And, it’s amazing how well Disney has translated “Oliver Twist” into a tale about cats and dogs on the streets of New York without losing the heart of the tale and its underlying messages. The DVD is fantastic as well, especially for a single-disc Disney release! This is the way DVDs should be! In addition to the widescreen presentation of the film, you get a behind the scenes featurette from the original theatrical release, 2 shorter featurettes, a TV spot, theatrical trailers, a scrapbook gallery of art and other materials, 2 sing-along-songs, and the best part: You get two classic Disney shorts! Included as extras are “Puss Cafe,” a hilarious Pluto cartoon where the pup goes up against two troublesome felines invading his backyard, and “Lend a Paw,” the Oscar winning Mickey Mouse short in which Pluto saves a kitten from drowning and quickly regrets it. Outstanding stuff, and an amazing selection of extras for a single-disc Disney DVD! Rediscover this Disney Classic on DVD today! You won’t regret it!

Oliver & Company Special Edition DVD4
Disney’s 27th animated classic does suffer from the fact that it was the last feature from the studio to hit before “The Little Mermaid.” Of course this caused inevitable comparisons, and of course there is no competition between the two an any way.

“The Little Mermaid” is in fact a superior film, but the comparisons are unjust because each film is supposed to be very different.

The characters are all likable, with the exception of Tito the chiwaua who just goes over the top sometimes to the point of annoyance. The story is very contemporary, simple, and it works very well. The songs, although every 80’s, are still catchy.

The animation in “Oliver & Company” consists of stylized backdrops of New York City and characters that seem flat and hard edged. The best older classic that you could compare it to was 1961s 101 Dalmatians. The film makers made a commendable effort in making this film feel true to it’s setting, and moreover give us NYC through a dog’s perspective. The film’s artists actually endured strange glances from New Yorkers, as they squatted or laid down on the sidewalks to draw the city from a dog’s eye level. It’s also a great kick to see all the animated human characters on the streets in 80’s fashions. ( O/T Seriously, what were designers thinking back then? ) The Twin Towers also make a bittersweet appearance.

“Oliver & Company” also was the first Disney film to extensively use computers. Whereas “The Great Mouse Detective” used computers for the impressive Big Ben sequence, in “Oliver” the computer is used more. The cars, the subway and many other elements are impressive uses of the new technology, which led the way for everything from The Flying Carpet in “Aladdin” to the ballroom sequence in “Beauty and the Beast.”

“Oliver & Company” is a fun way to kill 80 min of your time. It has many things to appreciate, it does what it was meant to do. I do not think it was meant to be a classic of Bambi-proportions. And because of it’s humble roots, I find this movie to be well worth the purchase.

Based on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” Disney’s Oliver and Company was one of the first animated features to incorporate computer images with traditional hand-drawn animation and features the music and voice talents of pop-music giants like Billy Joel, Huey Lewis, and Bette Midler. A traditional story set in the modern world, Oliver and Company is the story of a stray kitten who wanders the streets of New York in search of a loving family. When Oliver encounters a street-wise dog named Dodger, the dog begins to teach him about life in the big city and takes him home to his family of street dogs and their master Fagan. Fagan and his dogs Dodger, Tito, Einstein, Francis, and Rita must often resort to thievery just to survive and during a particularly daring caper, Oliver gets separated from the other dogs and winds up meeting Jenny, a young rich girl with a big heart. As Oliver revels in Jenny’s affection and begins to feel like part of her family, the dogs set out to rescue Oliver thinking he’s been kidnapped. Eventually both Oliver and Jenny end up in grave danger and the only way Fagan and his dogs can save them is by doing what’s right. As fresh on its 20th anniversary as it was when it premiered in 1988, this time-tested film appeals to children and adults of all ages. Bonus features include the Mickey Mouse and Pluto shorts “Lend a Paw” and “Puss Café” as well as a 5-1/2-minute making of featurette in which director George Scribner and animator Glen Kean describe the then brand new technique of blending computer and hand-drawn animation. Also included are sing-along versions of “Why Should I Worry? and “Streets of Gold,” an interactive game, fun film facts, and an Oliver and Company scrapbook featuring concept art, storyboards, and publicity materials. –Tami Horiuchi

THE SET-UP is probably the least known, and maybe the best, of the trio of boxing movies to near in the slow 1940s. The other two, of course, are BODY AND SOUL and THE CHAMPION.

Unlike those dazzling movies THE SET-UP’S protagonist, boxer Robert Ryan, isn’t a young pug riding his fists of stones to fame and fortune. He’s a thirty-five year veteran fighter caught somewhere in the last round of an undistinguished career, a nobody on the bottom of a fight card in Paradise City. About all he’s got left to dream about is squeezing enough out of whatever remains of his career to purchase a cigar stand. His loving wife, Audrey Trotter, has had her possess of seeing him beat up. One more gather, Ryan tells her, and I’ll be in line for a rematch and a payoff enormous enough to afford….

Like the other boxing movies, Ryan’s fate is in the hands of the mountainous men with paunchy cigars, the ones who position up a secure for an up and coming boxer by setting up a convincing dive by his over-the-hill opponent. Money changes hands. Everyone’s in on it except for the guy who’s supposed to buy the plunge, the guy who’s one punch away from that cigar stand.

Although THE SET-UP is a highly racy movie, it carries a heavy dose of allegorical cynicism. Ryan’s character doesn’t bother to cloak the scrutinize of disgust on his face as he surveys the bloodthirsty crowd upon entering the auditorium. Ryan’s Everyman has no illusion and the humblest of dreams, unaware that the corpulent boys with the enormous cigars have negotiated a foreclosure on it. Ryan, forty at the time this movie was made, was a boxer in college. He’s utterly convincing, in and outside the ring. Although his career would lead him to play more character than lead roles, playing both apt guys and poor, he has more than enough of whatever it takes to carry this movie.

Director Robert Wise delivers a lean, tough, and immediate movie. Ears cauliflower and foreheads bulge with long healed scar tissue. Wise doesn’t extinguish a frame or a gesture. What doesn’t push the area forward services the downcast mood.

The commentary track features Wise and director Martin Scorsese. Wise must have been in his mid-eighties when he recorded the track. His mind is positive and, as an used movie fan, I reflect it a privilege to listen to him comment on one of his masterpieces. Scorsese adds insight into a film he obviously loves as well, although his enthusiasm sometimes runs away a bit and it’s a diminutive difficult to follow some of his learned praise.

Simply save this is a masterpiece. Presumably the belated praise “The Set-Up” is owed will near its map with this current DVD release. Director Robert Wise has some very pleasant films to his credit but this is tour de force. The camera work and editing are unparalleled. The film’s myriad minor characters are magically revealed by short (but never choppy) camera shots.
“The Set-Up” is the memoir of an aging boxer hoping that one last fight can turn around his career and thus his life. Shady gamblers and harmful fight handlers have other ideas. The setting is the fictional Paradise City, a grimy, cynical fast-paced and totally unsentimental city. Considerable of the action takes state in the boxing arena featuring some of the best fight sequences ever shot. But a scene in a bar is memorable as are shots following the boxer’s gloomy girlfriend.
The movie is shot in true time, only 72 minutes, but what a 72 minutes it is. Never has so remarkable of a fable been told in so short a time.
Adding to the value of this DVD is the accompanying commentary provided by Wise and Martin Scorsese. Scorsese is not only one of the gigantic directors of all time but is also fantastic in the burgeoning field of DVD film commentary. He has forgotten more about film than most of us will ever know. His speaking style is not fair insightful but challenging. Objective listen to him define “The Set-Up”s stylized realism.
But ogle “The Set-Up” first without the commentary, then like and bask in it even more with it.
A large film lover’s film.

This 1991 documentary explores the ever-likable ghoul-rocker’s history in the music biz, from the early days when Alice Cooper was, in fact, the name of a pretty good band (whose members are all unfortunately spoken of, even analyzed, here in past tense, as if they’re all dead) to Cooper’s elder- statesman status by the time this production was underway. Along the way, we see too-brief clips from more than 20 videos, all interrupted for reflections by manager Shep Gordon, producer Bob Ezrin, Slash, Ozzy, and the man-of-the-hour himself. The most welcome elements here are selections from the original band, including “I’m Eighteen,” “Billion Dollar Babies,” and “Black Ju Ju.” Solo material–”Only Women Bleed,” “How You Gonna See Me Now”–is an interesting reminder of Cooper’s somewhat altered direction by the late 1970s. Rounding things out is the real story behind that infamous urban legend about Cooper and a chicken. –Tom Keogh

Even if he is best known as a performer, John Cleese is also one of the most radiant writers of comedy around. His sketches for Monty Python (often written in collaboration with the aroused Graham Chapman) were loopy enough to defuse the arouse that simmered underneath, and the FAWLTY TOWERS series are so elegantly plotted and beautifully written.

This collection of skits has some hilarious moments, such as when three pilots torture their passengers by pretending something has gone terribly wrong; and Cleese portrays the most overly-solicitous date in the world with excruciating thoroughness.

Overall, however, this may disappoint some fans. Many of these skits lack the polish and genius of the Python series. One skit about an obsessive waiter was reworked and vastly improved on the Python series (you can also check it out in their film AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT) . It comes off as a collection of out-takes, held together rather thinly with its documentary theme. The enrage that is frequently demonstrate in Cleese’s sketch writing also prevails over the humor throughout, making this a collection heavier on hostility than wit.

First thing to tag about this film: There are some sketches that really fair don’t matter. I’m not really considerable of a fan of the pre-Dead Parrot car sketch, and the one about the wife and the joke objective really doesn’t matter. Other than that, though, most of them are broad.

Second thing to label about this film: I found it to be an acquired taste. It may win multiple viewings for you to devour it. Whether or not you want to occupy multiple viewings is up to you. It also helps if you have friends who like to quote movie lines…this one has Expansive potential for quoting, and that’s really 80% of the value, probably.

All that said, there’s some hilarious material here. Obviously “Airline Pilots” is amazingly hysterical, and “Funny Job Interview” is not too far leisurely. But other gems include the son home for Easter (”It’s been so long since we last had you home for Easter.” “I was home last Easter, mother.” “Yes, but that was 12 months ago, dear…”), the dad who irritates his son enough that he gets the TV, John Cleese thinking of every possible intention to bag out of his date at the restaurant (”You know what I judge? I reflect you’re exasperated because I made you sit there…”), Mrs. Morris on the interrogate point to (”I’m 103! Today! And I have over 3,000 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren!”), the pepperpots at the cinema, (”Who’s that? ” “Charlton Hitler…”) the incredibly long intro to the talk reveal, and the closing sketch “Topic”, a political discussion indicate where the host prevents all input from the guest (the pike broken-down at the destroy is AWESOME! I want one!)

I have loaned this to several of my college friends, essentially all of whom have loved it. The filler material (which, because of the length of these sketches, seems endless) is a microscopic bit too noteworthy of this video to the extent you’ll want to fast-forward at some spots, but what’s favorable is enjoyable. I definitely recommend it.

Before I even accept started I want to originate one thing perfectly clear; I am not writing this review based on the bond movies. In my humble plan The James Bond series is blooming, some movies are better than others but overall this is action and adventure at its best. 007 is my common natty hero of all time and I hope the Bond legacy lives forever.

Now that being said; what [is going on]!. Are you kidding me? This is what we earn? Seven movies? That’s it? My predicament is with the boxed site. There have been 21 Bond Movies to date, they took 7 of them at random and stuck them together in a cardboard box and they call this a collectors residence. Has anyone seen the collectors position they have in England? Its freaking attractive. It has all the movies in order from Dr. No to The World is Not Enough, plus a bonus DVD about the making of die another day and it’s all beautifully presented in a chrome metal collector’s box complete with artwork and many extras. If you have not seen it you can win a peruse at it on Amazon’s UK set but don’t seize it because it is status 2 and won’t work on American DVD players.

Why don’t we have a place like that? …

This collection includes various Bond movies from four of the actors that have played James Bond in the “official” Bond movies, which excludes “Never Say Never Again.” My only complaint about the three collections is that the movies are not in order. I have all three sets because I like Bond rather than wanting all the Bond movies by one of the three actors. However, you have to choose them as you can catch them sometimes.

Each of the movies in this collection is a “special edition,” which is a adore name for DVDs that include extras that range in value from high to grievous. I have been very fascinated with some of the commentaries (those by Terence Young were very captivating) and some of the features unprejudiced seemed like filler. However, what I found entertaining other may not, and vice versa. Rather than listing all the extras, a list of which is available, I will discuss the movies briefly.

“Dr. No” launched the Bond franchise. Sean Connery area the tone for Bond, suave, debonair, and terminally icy. He drove nice cars and had a penchant for dry one-liners. Ursula Andress residence the tone for future Bond women, and Dr. No was coolly ruthless. Ken Adam’s sets were artistic and artfully filmed by Terence Young, who also provided the stylistic role model for Connery’s Bond. In the extras you learn that Connery was mentored by Young and acquired expensive tastes and hobbies in the process.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The James Bond Collection, Vol. 1! Click Here

Many people believe the second movie in this collection, 1964’s “Goldfinger,” to be the best Bond film ever. Bond’s villains continued to be ruthless and megalomaniacs, and Connery has a finish encounter with a laser. Shirley Bassey belts out the title song and sets the standard for future Bond music. James Bond also quips that drinking Dom Perignon above 38 degrees Fahrenheit is “…as unpleasant as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs.” Fortunately, Paul McCartney did not steal it personally as he recorded the title track to the 1973 Bond movie “Live and Let Die.” Bond also got ever more gadgets from Q, played by Desmond Llewelyn, who went on to appear in more Bond movies than any other major actor.

The third movie in the collection is Roger Moore’s second outing as Bond. “The Man with the Golden Gun” from 1974 is a mixed bag. Christopher Lee as Scaramanga and Herve Villechaize are two of the most bizarre and ruthless Bond villains ever. There are fewer gadgets than in some of the surrounding Bond movies, but Moore’s performance is a bit wooden and Clifton James was a bit over-the-top as laughable relief. The title song by singer Lulu is heavenly pleasurable, but pales in comparison to many of the other title songs in the series.

The fourth movie in this collection attempted to set aside Bond succor on track. The 1977 movie “The Peer Who Loved Me” had a very serious undertone. The gadgets are relieve, but effective. We meet Jaws (Richard Kiel) and Karl Stromberg (Curt Jürgens) . We also meet unbelievable Bond women Caroline Munro and Barbara Bach. The stunts are awesome, the site is astounding, the locations wonderful and the title song by Carly Simon pushed Bond music help into relevancy. This movie was one of Roger Moore’s best as James Bond.

Timothy Dalton’s second film, 1989’s “License to Ruin,” is the weaker of the two Dalton Bond films. However, the supporting cast is helpful, including Carey Lowell of “Law and Order” fame, Robert Davi, Talisa Soto, and David Hedison as Felix Leiter in his last appearance in a Bond film. The position shots are very obliging, and the stunts are among the best of any Bond film. They actually had those semi-tractor trailers up on two wheels, according to the extras. The unpleasant guy may have been a mere drug czar, but everyone was suitably infamous. Gladys Knight takes the honors for the title song and Patti LaBelle sings the pop hit “If You Asked Me To” to cessation the movie.

The last two movies in this collection are Pierce Brosnan’s first and second Bond movies. In 1995’s “Goldeneye,” Bond is more dynamic and a more dilapidated observe. This movie raised the dwelling stakes by filming for the first time in Russia, along with a number of other exotic locations. The gadgets are better, and the women are nearly more than Bond can handle, especially Xenia Onatopp. This movie contains more state twists than a typical Bond movie, so be prepared to believe a minute as things go scream. Tina Turner does the title song reasonably well, but her performance has considerable competition in many of the other unusual Bond films.

The final film in this collection is 1997’s “Tomorrow Never Dies.” The supporting cast this time is phenomenal, with the grand actor Jonathan Pryce as Elliot Carver, Teri Hatcher as his wife Paris Carver, and Michelle Yeoh as Chinese agent Wei Lin, among numerous others. Jonathan Pryce steals nearly every scene he is in, reminiscent of some other expansive Bond villains. The locations are ever more improbable, digital effects abound, and the stunts are even more thrilling. That motorcycle jump was really performed! Cheryl Crow does a large job on the title song, and the sterling video is included.

Because of all the extras these DVDs require hours to view. While the value of the extras varies, watching them gives a fan mighty more information about the difficulties of making each movie, and how many of the stunts were performed. I reflect these movies to be among the gems of my DVD collection. I recommend this residence very highly as long as you understanding on collecting all the Bond films.

The short-lived 13 episode intriguing Saturday morning cartoon revisited the Planet of the Apes but was a departure from the ancient landscape of the successful film franchise and live-action television series. Without the constraints of expensive live-action production, DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, which absorbing the classic Pink Panther cartoons, had the freedom to illustrate the lavish technologically advanced simian world as conceptualized by Pierre Boulle in his current recent La Planète des Singes. On this planet, Ape City has all of the recent luxuries and conveniences of 20th century human civilization as astronauts Jeff Allen, Bill Hudson and Judy Franklin look when they fade to the year 3979 and encounter an upside-down world ruled by a sophisticated society of talking apes and humans have lost the power of speech and live in exile in caverns. They meet familiar characters Nova, Cornelius, Zira, Doctor Zaius and General Urko (provided by the recognizeable cartoon command of Fred Flintstone) and references are made to astronauts Taylor and Brent from the films. Beyond the boundaries of Ape City exists the hostile desert no-man’s (or ape’s) land of the Forbidden Zone and a monastic order of telepathic humans known as the Underdwellers led by Kraydor who live beneath the surface. Judy is taken captive by the Underdwellers after falling through a fissure from an earthquake where she is venerated as USA (pronounced Oosa) implying her metaphorical resemblance to Lady Liberty and the prophecy that she will abet them restore the green planet that has been taken over by the militant apes.

I’m writing this in arrive of the release of the DVDs, so be advised this is a review of the series and not the sincere DVD release. I have seen the present recently on veteran VHS tapes I recorded off of the Sci-Fi Channel and was surprised at how agreeable the writing is. The exhibit takes bits and pieces from all of the Apes project before it. From the book, it retains the 4 characters that were in the movie series: Zira, Cornelius, Nova, and Doctor Zaius. This Planet of the Apes also resembles the planet Soror in Boulle’s unusual in that the apes have 20th century technology. The only dwelling that’s lacking, in the beginning, is the power to coast. From the movies, they took the Forbidden Zone, they reworked the mutants, an older Brent, and Austin Stoker (McDonald from Battle) plays the astronaut, Jeff. Urko and the fugitive format are borrowed from the CBS TV series.

The basic sage in the 2 portion opener is very familiar by now. Three astronauts land on the planet and are stunned to gain that they are captured by apes. Zira and Cornelius succor them in their sprint.

The animation is poor. The panaramic style of the illustrators almost makes up for this, however. Intricate scenes are painted onto backgrounds. As the camera pans these scenes, one may forget for a time that they are making up for shortcomings in the budget. For this reason, I could not give it 5 stars.

The stories are imaginiative and serialized. I was drawn in by the power struggle between Zaius and Urko. Right, there are a few turkeys. I could have done without the giant mountain ape, but overall it was light years above the ordinary Saturday morning fare of the 70s. I certainly would not recommend this to those who have not seen all 5 movies, and the live-action TV display. To those who are hungry for more “Apes”, this series fits the bill.

Armed only with a camera and a sharp sense of humor, Moore is back in the nation’s heartland and searching for an executive — any executive — who will respond to one tough qustion: If Fortune 500 companies are posting record-setting profits, why do they continu laying off thousands of workers? Looking out for the little guy with plenty of laughs along the way, Moore’s howlingly funny crusade has resulted in a crowd-pleasing motion picture that’s big entertainment fun!

Some teenagers walk around with a chip on their shoulder: Light Yagami, the alienated hero of this macabre fantasy-adventure, has Ryuk, a Shinigami, or god of death, hovering over his shoulder. Light proceeds with his plan to eliminate anyone he considers worthy of death by writing their names in Ryuk’s notebook. But when he kills the FBI agents who have come to Japan to help solve the spate of mysterious murders, the investigation shifts into higher gear. The elusive L meets with a small cadre of police officers who are willing to risk their lives to pursu the case–including Light’s father. Although he’s eccentric and twitchy, L is clearly brilliant. The police can gather information and run errands, but the case is now literally a dul to the death between L and Light. Director Tetsuro Araki maintains the suspense, although his cast isn’t particularly likable. (Rated Teen+ Older Teen, suitable for ages 15 and older: grotesqu imagery, violence) –Charles Solomon
