Bill Murray at his comedic best5
It is said that the role of Peter Venkman was originally written for John Belushi, but we’ll never know how he would have performed in the role. Fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Murray stepped into the role and ran away with the movie. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd fit into the story like a glove in Ivan Reitman’s masterpiece, but Bill Murray steals his every scene - which means most of the movie - with a performance full of dead-pan, ironic, world-weary, been-there-done-that hilariousness.

He has a sarcastic remark for every occasion, and the audience is the only one in on the joke every time.

When prospective girlfriend Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver, who gets a plum opportunity to show off her comedic skills) gets possessed by an evil demon, she is transformed into a slinky seductress. Bill Murray has come over to her apartment and in his hilarious dead-pan manner lets the audience know that he recognizes all is not normal with Ms. Barrett. As hilarious and sarcastic as Venkman is, he’s at least a gentleman of sorts and doesn’t take advantage of the situation when the demon tries to seduce him.

“Do you want this body?” Sigourney-demon asks him.
He pauses for a perfect beat before replying:
“Is this a trick question?”

The special effects don’t look like the CGI visions that have been on screen for a couple of years (this was 1984) yet they’re part of the fun. Even so, the special effects serve the story rather than up-staging it, and when the movie was initially released I remember howling with the audience after the first special-effect ghost “attacks” Bill Murray and leaves him on the floor in a glistening mess.
“He SLIMED me!” Venkman yelled, and we laughed our heads off.

This disc is not dated by contemporary references - it’s just as hilarious today as it was in 1984, and it’ll probably be just as funny 100 years from now. The DVD comes with extras that add to the fun, and in the commentary tracks Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis show that “Ghostbusters” was an absolute highlight in all of their lives.

Mine too.

OPEN THE TRAP5
When you pick up GHOSTBUSTERS on DVD you’re picking up more than just a movie, but a library. Packed, stacked, and fully featured, GHOSTBUSTERS is the end all be all of movies (on a FIDDLE FACTOR of one to ten, i.e. - bells, knobs, whistles… GHOSTBUSTERS is a ten… you will spend a good hour or two just playing with all the features). Beside a clean transfer, excellent sound and a timeless movie, you get commentary, concept to screen both in art work and special effects (a chance to use your ANGLE button here where you can watch the finished scene, then flip to the rough cut and special effect cut of the same scene). Excellent interactive menus (wait long enough and STAY PUFF will turn a corner and come marching down the street), a FACTS and TRIVIA track which scrolls inside information in subtitles under the film. Three extra trailers for GROUNDHOG DAY, STRIPES and GHOSTBUSTERS 2 are also included… shamless promotion, but also of historial interest as well… when was the last time you saw the STRIPES preview? All in all… buy it.

Is it worth the Blu-ray version of it?5

And the answer is absolutely YES!

I won’t get caught in the main synopsis of the movie, I’m guessing you know the story and the actors. If not you should be asking your self where have you been the last twenty years or so…now lets get into it!

Video Quality on this release is in full 1080p using the MPEG-4 codec on a BD-50 (50 gigabyte dual-layered Blu-ray Disc). This is a great catalog release. It is so refreshing to see a studio not attempt tweaking the original image with digital noise reduction and edge enhancement. This is a faithful to the source transfer. Clarity and resolution is where this transfer shines, all the little signs, switches, knobs and so forth are all clearly defined displaying an excellent depth of field. Colors are nicely saturated and accurate displaying good natural hues.

As for the Bonus Materials: these are presented in Standard Definition 480i and High Definition 1080i with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound.

* BD-Live - Keep in mind that BD-Live requires the user to be on a “Profile 2.0″ capable Blu-ray Disc Player and connected to the Internet to access online content via the studio (in this case Sony). Once online you can access content such as downloadable trailers for other Sony Blu-ray Disc release upcoming and already available. Title specific content in this case is actually included. 2 different Ring tones are available which are just dialogue from the film. Standard rates apply to get these I’m sure, nothing is 100% free these days.

* “Cinechat” - This BD-live application allows viewers to chat with friends and family while watching the film. A easy to understand tutorial is included.

* “Slimer Mode” is a Blu-ray exclusive feature that is using Bonus View which requires the user to be on a “Profile 1.1″ or higher capable Blu-ray Disc Player. If you are capable of it, this is worth the time to watch all the way through. A neat “Ghostbusters” border frames the film while it’s playing; at the same time a Picture-In-Picture track plays interview clips featuring the cast and crew looking back at the production. It is complemented with additional still photographs and behind-the-scenes video. A pop-up trivia track is also inserted into the mix, showcasing interesting facts about the film and its shooting locations.

* “Blu-Wizard” - A BD-Java feature that will allow viewers to create their own play list of special features by selecting only those of interest. Once activated, a pop-up marker indicates when that particular feature is available to view.

* Audio Commentary - Director Ivan Reitman is joined by co-writer/actor Harold Ramis and associate producer Joe Medjuck. It is unfortunate that they weren’t able to update the commentary (originally recorded in 1999 for the DVD release) with thoughts from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, or Sigourney Weaver. This is very informative track but unfortunately it comes across as dry. Opcional subtitles are included.

* “Scene Cemetery” (9 minutes - SD) - This is a collection of 10 deleted scenes that while fun to see in their own right aren’t missed in the film.

* “1984 Featurette” (9:45 - SD) - This is a fun vintage featurette shot for the original 1984 release. Featuring behind-the-scenes footage and short interviews with cast and crew talking about the various aspects of making this beloved movie.

* “Cast and Crew Featurette” (10:53 - SD) -This is a short 11 minute featurette originally recorded for the 1999 DVD release. It is a collection of interviews with Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis talking about the film and its impact in general.

* “SFX Team Featurette” (15:22 - SD) - This is a panel discussion with the original F/X team. They discuss their experience of working on the film.

* “Multi-Angle Featurettes” (SD) - This is broken into three sections: “Spook Central Exploding” (2:49), “She’s A Dog” (2:00), and “Crossing the Streams” (1:23). Here you can watch the rough video and animation work in before-and-after stages from three particular scenes.

* “Storyboard Comparisons” (SD) - Also broken into three sections: “Slimer” (2:13), “Dogs Drag Dana” (2:09), and “Atop Spook Central” (2:04). you can watch the hand-drawn storyboards and compare them to the film’s finished cut.

* “Ecto-1: Resurrecting the Classic Car” (15:37 - HD) - Sony and the filmmakers had the hero car restored to its original glory for the promotion of “Ghostbusters: The Video Game”. Interview clips include Dan Aykroyd and the talented crew of people who worked on the refurbishment of the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor Ambulance. The real treat is seeing the process of breaking down the car and building it back up to look better than it ever has. Once it is restored Dan Aykroyd was invited to see the Ecto-1 in all it’s glory and it is a pleasure seeing the genuine joy he displays at being reunited with the old girl.

* “Making of Ghostbusters: The Video Game” (11:18 - HD) - A promotional fluff piece for the video game has the cast and creators sharing their thoughts about the game and its storyline. Brief clips of the video game are interspersed throughout. The game looks like a fun trip down memory lane. The graphics look authentic to the “Ghostbusters” films.

* “Ghostbusters Garage: Ecto-1 Gallery” (HD) - This is a beautiful slide show highlighting the restoration process, whilst Elmer Bernstein’s music plays in the background.

* “Ghostbusters: The Video Game Preview” (1:43 - HD) - Simply this is the trailer for the now available video game.

* Theatrical Trailers (HD) - A collection of previews in HD `The Da Vinci Code: Extended Cut,’ `Close Encounters of the Third Kind,’ `Men in Black,’ `Fired Up!,’ `Paul Blart: Mall Cop,’ `So I Married an Axe Murderer,’ and `You Don’t Mess With the Zohan’.

Hope this was useful.
At the end if you ask me this si a must have!

Amazon.com essential video
Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins–who knew they could “slime” people with green plasma goo?–but hovering above the plot is Murray’s patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black. –Tom Keogh

I am eagerly awaiting this release. I peek that BBC Warner is the studio, so hopefully this version will be of as high technical quality as BBC Warner’s release of Series 1-3. The main complaints about the previously available version (by Acorn Media) of Series 4 was that the transfer to DVD was not very well-behaved.

Glad to sight the Royal Appearance is tranquil included with this recent version and suitable now the brand ($19+) is wonderful!

Update: after purchasing this situation, I can happily say that the quality of the DVD transfer is on par with the release of Series 1-3. Also, the Royal Appearance episode is really a treat and a noteworthy better “ending” for the series than the somewhat bittersweet “Anniversary” episode. One of the few series I’ll want to go encourage to and peer again and again for all time.

Now if someone would impartial release “The Norman Conquests” (which features Richard Briers & Penelope Keith as husband and wife and stars Tom Conti in a unbelievable performance) and “Lovejoy” (in an upgraded, reasonably priced box residence), my life would be complete…

Good Neighbors composed stands head and shoulders above many classic Britcoms as the funniest and most though-provoking. The situations and actors are bright (this is arguably Penelope Keith’s best role), and its filled with enough wit, double entendre, and generous silliness to acquire it delicious over and over again. Regardless of which residence you are in the rat run, you’ll salvage this series hilarious and meaningful. Be obvious to accumulate every season - its definitely worth it! This dvd situation, “Recent Beginning” is anything but the beginning of the series. It’s episodes 2-5. Why they would do this, I have no opinion. It makes no logical sense to me. I ordered it because Cartoon Network Started with Episode 3. Which also makes no sense because the first 2 setup the entire series.

Well, all very gripping. About the DVD itself, discover out. It only has episodes 2-5. This means that I will probably never look episode one of this series. But, oh well.

Since that’s about all there is to say for the DVD, let me talk about the reveal. Though it seemed that this would be a continuation from energon/armada, it really isn’t. In the indicate they never say so, and too noteworthy would be unresolved. It seems that it is a series unto itself.

From all the transformers I’ve seen, this series is really honorable. Compared to the 2 before it, it is outstanding. It makes sense, and it’s icy. Finally, there is a series where Megatron can kick Optimus’s butt! The animation is an awesome touch, and though the illustated shows are cold, it’s nice to have another one since Beast Wars.

The shows have a frigid station. The Autobots need to salvage the four Cyber Planet Keys (as Optimus laboriously states in the opening song every weekday) to halt the sunless hole. Megatron wants them to net power and rule the universe.

The four on this disc are satisfactory, being that they spot up the whole situation for the series, but are drastically missing episode one. But who cares, they were cold enough for me to procure it.

I can’t assume of a mountainous enough cynic who can dismiss the charms of this movie. On my list, Paper Moon qualifies as one of the best comedies ever made, a mixture of childlike wonder and wry sarcasm, simultaneously unruffled in its myth come (thanks to improbable understated camerawork) and intimate.

The script has no faults. Scenes hurtle forward at a brisk but never hyper scoot, every moment pregnant with character development and moving dialogue. Ryan and Tatum O’Neal’s exchanges are pristine in their laughable timing, side-splitting and touching at the same time, effortlessly exploiting the chemistry between father and daughter. Their scenes in the car are so hilarious and endearing that you’d wish you could wobble with them for hours longer. And the film is rich in period flavour, from the stark black-and-white photography to the music to every character, evoking a sense of longing for a more innocent age without ever lapsing into downright nostalgia. The themes — the vagabond heart which can’t stand tranquil, growing up, identity, friendship — ring as suitable today as they always did.

I saw this movie when I was quite young and it’s never lost its magical fill on me. Gawk it again even if you have already; you will witness something unique every time.

Adapted from the matchless current “Addie Pray” by Joe David Brown, Paper Moon is status in the Midwest/dustbowl during the Sizable Depression/Roosevelt era. One-of-a-kind directing by Peter Bogdanovich, ravishing murky & white cinematography, a enormous musical catch with snippets of weak time radio shows like Fibber McGee & Molly, Jack Benny and a host of others.

Real-life father & daughter duo, Ryan & Tatum O’Neil team up in this gem of a movie.

Ryan plays Moses Pray. A slick, sliver-tongued, gold toothed, travelling huckster & who always has a unusual con to turn up his sleeve such as door to door Bible selling to recently widowed women, bootlegging, short changing, and a “car swappin’ wrasslin’ match” between Moses and a very young Randy Quaid. Tatum plays Addie and garnered the coveted Oscar for her performance at the tender age of 10. Addie decides to gain in on many of the cons and becomes quite a prolific short change artist. Addie decides on her acquire to retract Moses’ last name and move with him under the guise as his daughter. In one of the best scenes in the movie they deal with whether or not Addie is Moses’ illegitimate daughter. That scene is region in a diner while drinking NeHi’s and eating Coney Islands. Addie is definite that Moses is, indeed, her father as she states, “We got the SAME jaw!” Moses responds and says, “I know a lady who has the jaw of a bullfrog but that doesn’t mean that she’s the damn things mother!” Addie asks Moses, “You meet my mamma in a barroom? ” (implying that her mamma was a prostitute) . Moses comes honest assist asking Addie, “You reflect that unbiased because a man meets a woman in a barroom means that they accept a baby? ” Ryan and Tatum’s bantering repartee is natural, hilarious and touching all at the same time.

The Prays drop “prey” to a con played on them (well, Moses anyway) as the film progesses, by a hootchie-cootchie sideshow carnival dancer/prostitute named Miss Trixie Delight, adeptly played by Madelyn Kahn who was also nominated for an Oscar. The sneaky and a minute jealous Addie deals with Miss Trixie in her acquire time and also helps out Miss Trixie’s maid, Imogene and gives her money to return help to her family.

This is a mountainous family movie with a touching father/daughter fable to piece. No nudity, few “cuss” words, and an all-around crowd pleaser whether you are 6 or 106. I don’t mind telling you that this is my celebrated movie of all time and I have viewed it upwards of 100 times. I peaceful laugh, bellow, and go through a multitude of emotions no matter how many times a peep the film. Certainly, a hallmark of a gigantic cinematic masterpiece! Gratified Watching!

Here are the episodes found on this DVD:

INTO THE DEEP - In this underwater Bollywood musical, Deep-Sea Explorers Tyrone and Pablo attempt to lift the garden-guarding Mermaids Uniqua and Tasha–on film, that is!

NEWS FLASH - Proud, Motown-singing Farmers Pablo and Tyrone inadvertently region up an out-of-this-world encounter in their cornfield to find their prized corn gash on the news.

SAVE THE DAY - Groove to psychedelic soul as Harbor Patrollers Uniqua, Pablo, and Tyrone repeatedly assign sure Fisher-lady Tasha, who insists upon fishing in unsafe waters!

CATCH THAT BUTTERFLY - It’s a Wild West trot plot to funny opera when Professor Pablo hires tough Stagecoach Drivers Tyrone and Uniqua to assist him find the rare Gilded Butterfly.

Unfortunately, it seems that Austin, the purple kangaroo, is absent from all the episodes on this DVD… (Oops! I stand corrected. My son objective told me that Austin appears in Newsflash.)

The Special Features are minimal: a Dora Saves the Mermaids sneak seek (it will be released in September of 2007) and a Can’t Close the Cops video.

This DVD has a runtime of 99 minutes–and is yet another exquisite addition to the Backyardigans DVDs!

The Backyardigans series is one of the few children’s shows that can be watched over and over again without causing involuntary twitches, nervous breakdowns or constant look rolling on the allotment of adults. The five characters are extremely likeable, the episodes highly imaginative, and the selection of a different genre of music for each episode is a stroke of creative genius.

Two of the episodes on this DVD qualify for special praise in the musical department, and these are “Into the Deep” which uses Bollywood melodies, and “Fetch That Butterfly” which is pure operatic brilliance. “Establish the Day” is psychedelic soul and “Newsflash” is inspired by Motown music.

A summary of the four episodes on this DVD is below:

“Into the Deep” (summarized to the tune “Octopus’s Garden”)

Here you will stare, under the sea

Tasha and Uniqua’s garden in the shade

But don’t go in, they’ll cause a din

A runt mermaids’ garden escapade

Then undersea, came P and T

With their underwater plans for a movie

The girls freak out, and open to scream

But everything works out eventually

“Newsflash” (summarized to the tune “Oh What a Handsome Morning”)

There’s some smart golden corn in the cornfields

There’s some knowing golden corn in the cornfields

The news people affirm, no newsflashes arise

When down at the farm, two guys sensationalize

Oh what a delicate newsflash

Oh what a shapely eye

I’ve got a amazing feeling That there will be some news tonight

“Build the Day” (summarized to the tune “Pop Goes the Weasel”)

Round and round the Harbor Patrol

The lady chased the whopper

The lady told them to salvage lost

And they couldn’t cessation her!

A jet ski for a sea of sharks

A chopper for a rescue

That’s the plot the narrative goes

Oh! What a whopper!

“Gain That Butterfly” (unusual lyrics from “Obsession” by Animotion)

I will have you

Yes I will have you

I will salvage a design and I will have you

Like a butterfly

A wild butterfly

I will win you and pick you

No more needs to be said about this absolutely shining episode about a British bug collector and two qualified stagecoach drivers. Hi-ho aged chap, I’ve said a mouthful here.

…Kubrik masterminded Dr. Strangelove, loosely basing the movie upon the book “Red Alert” (the book is a completely serious Frosty War nuclear war scenario, but Strangelove is a complete and total farce) . “Strangelove” came out a year or two after the Cuban October missile crisis, a year after US President John Kennedy was assassinated as well as 2 other contemporaneous films, the shiny and paranoid “The Manchurian Candidate” and the serious treatment of the same book, “Fail Salubrious.”

Kubrik originally state out to do a serious treatment of the book. But Kubrik found as he tried to perform the screenplay that he kept running into scenes that he ended up writing as satire. Recognizing the challenge, Kubrik enlisted the talents of one of the best comedic screenwriters in Hollywood, Terry Southern, to do the screenplay.

Casting the film was piece genius and piece hit-and-miss joyful accident. … Somehow Slim Pickens’ name came up and Pickens favorite the role of the B-52 bomber pilot. Even more ironic yet, Slim Pickens was more conservative than Dan Blocker, but Pickens never caught on during the film’s production that Dr. Strangelove was a comedy, remarkable less a satire and a farce unsympathetic to the official propaganda of the cool war.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove! Click Here

In of itself, it was a comical master stroke telling Pickens play the role seriously. Pickens was apparently no big wit, so Kubrik was able to withhold Pickens completely unaware that Pickens was actually playing in a comedy, not a serious war movie (one can only recall that the humor of the residence was not lost on the other cast members, including James Earl Jones who played Capt. Kong’s bombardier.. “Don’t bid Slim this is all a enormous joke, we have to let him contemplate this is a loyal war movie.” ) .

Other than Peter Sellers’ roles, George C. Scott (later in “Patton”) and Helpful Hayden delivered memorable performances. Both were obviously instructed to play their roles “over the top.” Kubrik instructed Scott to overact the role of the cigar-smoking, gut-slapping, martini-drinking & womanizing General Buck Turgidson (fetch it? Turgid-son? ) . In the scene in the war room where Turgidson exuberantly proclaims the spectacle of a B-52 bomber evading radar by hedge-hopping, Kubrik instructed George C. Scott to deliberately overact the share. Kubrik had Scott re-take the scene several times, asking Scott to compose it even more over-the-top than before. On the last lift of that scene, Scott practically performed it as a burlesque parody, which was of course, the final buy that Kubrik actually stale.

Sterling Hayden delivered a gleaming performance as the psychotic Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, the Air Force general who unilaterally orders the nuclear strike against the USSR. The confusion of Chilly War paranoia, paranoid psychosis and fraudulent sexual power in Hayden’s scenes is the blackest of sunless satire. Totally over the top, ludicrous and frightenlingly possible (what if one of your top military brass really went insane and over-rode all the safe-guards against nuclear war? ) . The insane babblings of General Ripper plot the film’s direction and act as its centerpiece, delivering both Kubrik’s satire of anti-communist propaganda and the air of impossible odds for the rest of the film’s characters to overcome that they might somehow avert doomsday.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove! Click Here

Peter Seller’s performances as the President, the British officer and Dr. Strangelove (a left-over Nazi scientist) are memorable, Sellers delivers the title role as the deranged wheelchair-bound Nazi scientist who suffers from involuntary palsied “Seig Hiels!” in his legal arm. Again sex is the dependable underlying motive to yet another character and the opportunities for a sexually prodigious post-apocalyptic eugenic world brings the deranged Strangelove to a frenzied outburst of libidinal energy: “Mein Fuhrer! I can vwalk!” But as worthy as I indulge in Sellers’ roles, they seem overshadowed by the rest of the film’s characters. P>It comes probably of no surprise that the U.S. Air Force refused to support Kubrik in shooting the movie. Having to choice, Kubrik had to resort to mocking up the B-52 flying scenes and bomber interior cabin scenes as best he could (the bomber interior was apparently such a genuine replica of the right thing that the FBI launched an investigation into who gave Kubrik such a detailed layout of a B-52’s flight deck) . Appropriately, the exterior B-52 flying scenes contain a comical flaw if you examine closely enough: In one scene, as the damaged bomber hedge-hops across the Siberian taiga (northern boreal forest), you can leer that the underlying shadow of the plane is actually that of a four-engine propellor aircraft and doesn’t match the profile of the overlaid B-52 model.

Suffice it to say, when the movie came out, it was not universally received or even widely understood. It was drummed by political commentators and movie reviewers who found it to be tasteless and sophomoric. The studio was very concerned about the potential a negative backlash from its release (contemplate that in the same year, the Manchurian Candidate was withdrawn from theaters after Kennedy was assassinated) . An internal memo described Dr. Strangelove as “a expansive, sick malefic joke” and questioned the wisdom of even releasing the movie at all. After all, the movie starts off with B-52’s and tanker planes copulating during mid-flight refuelings, displays Air Force “Peace is Our Profession” billboards in the midst of a fire fight between the US Army and Air Force security, depicts two Air Force generals as complete sex-obsessed baffoons, one a psychotic and the other a braying ass, delivers a deranged Nazi scientist and finally a cowboy pilot bucking the biggest phallic bronco of his career (never mind blowing up the world) .

I can reflect of few other films whose film makers so defied convention and created a memoir that really turned old-fashioned wisdom on its head. Dr. Strangelove keeps coming at you as one improper scene after another, interspersed with segments of complete straight-faced dead-pan, piling them all on until the fateful kill. When Pickins died in 1983, CBS news anchor Dan Rather delivered the obituary replete with the out steal of Pickins riding the bomb (Perhaps DeForest Kelley topped that and made suitable on his threat to have “He’s expressionless, Jim” engraved on his tombstone….) .

There are some things you impartial can’t live down: Being the face that gets a titanic closing falling scene that leads to the ruin of all life on Earth happens to be one of those things. Dreadful Slim, he’s probably suffering in a purgatory of a Liberal Methodist heaven.

In closing, I have to agree with that long-forgotten studio executive who wrote in the memo: Dr. Strangelove *IS* a astronomical, sick malefic joke. But it is one of the finest tremendous, sick malefic jokes ever created, and stands as a film masterpiece. Those who extoll the virtues of this fil

I doubt that you could imagine how worthy it would distress me to give a single-star rating to an edition of the film I believe to be the singular greatest contribution to the motion narrate. However, the original “40th Anniversary” edition of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To End Worrying And Like The Bomb is, unquestionably, requiring of such a rating. Why?, you ask.

Because about fifteen to twenty percent of the camouflage image has been removed!!!

If you pick a recognize, you will discover that this unique “Special” edition of Dr. Strangelove is presented in anamorphic widescreen, with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This, as you can bag from examining older editions of the film, is the first time the film has ever been presented in such a manner. The reason why (and you may cross-check this with the Internet Movie Database [IMDb] or any book on Stanley Kubrick worth its salt) is because Dr. Strangelove was NOT FILMED in 1.66:1. It was technically filmed with a varying aspect ratio (the reasons for which are calm not fully explicated, as far as I’ve seen), but, in general, it was filmed in about 1.33:1.

So, you ask, how does a film shot in 1.33:1 net presented in 1.66:1? Did someone return to the unique negative and show material previously hidden from search for, lost on every print and VHS, Beta, laserdisc and DVD copy heretofore released?

NO!

They simply gash off the top and bottom of the cover!!!

Such things are not unprecedented. An extremely similar case is the so-called “panoramic” Gone With The Wind. The film, made in 1939 (before there was anything BUT 1.33:1, the “Academy” aspect ratio), when released in the Panavision/Technorama age of the mid-1960’s was similar chopped and changed to magically become 2.35:1. This edition was released on video and DVD a few times before, finally, it was restored to its current 1.33:1 glory.

Stanley Kubrick was absolutely famous for his perfectionism and auteur station in the film industry, and I cannot occupy that a company proposing to release a definitive “Special” edition of his greatest masterpiece would be so heartless as to unnecessarily delete a estimable section of the conceal.

Please avoid this original, bastardized Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Discontinuance Worrying And Fancy The Bomb. While the few novel extras thereon are of interest, they can easily be seen via rental from the local video store, as suplemental to the last “Special Edition” of the DVD (which, incidentally, clearly states on the benefit that it is “Presented in the current aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1″.

Thank you,

Marc-David Jacobs

P.S. For those of you involved in seeing the dreadful editing job for yourselves, feel free to go out and rent the current edition and the previous edition and go to seven minutes and forty-eight seconds, which is the outrageous tight shot of the B-52’s CRM-114 decoder book. As you will gape, an entire line of text on the top, and about one-and-a-half on the bottom are not completely missing.

The film:

“Dr. No” and “From Russia With Admire” are classics in their hold rights, but “Goldfinger” really has it all. A pleasant villain, Bond-babes galore, lush locales, and Sean Connery at his best. And it’s all done at a brisk, involving journey which never feels bloated in the arrangement “Thunderball” did.

The classic moments in this film are too numerous to mention. The babooshka-granny with the machine gun, death by gold paint, the tricked out Aston Martin, lasers to the groin, Uncommon Job and his peculiar haberdasheries… This film has been referenced and spoofed so many times by so many lesser movies and shows that you’ll likely not be surprised even if it is your first time watching.

It’s all pulled off with such panache and style, it doesn’t feel cliched at all (plus, it pays to remember that it was all unusual and unique when it premiered.) Goldfinger has the perfect mix of humor, violence, style, and frigid. The mix went out of whack with most Bond films after it, and the franchise (arguably) probably hasn’t returned to a noble balance until “Casino Royale.”

Anyway, it’s shapely nearly a perfect Bond movie. Relentlessly inspiring, fun, entertaining, and unprejudiced darn first-rate.

The Blu-Ray:

This transfer really shines at times, with impressive detail on facial close-ups, mountain vistas, and clothing. There are some soft spots, but this is quite forgivable in a 45 year weak film. Overall, the detail is very impressive, and tops that of the previous two films on Blu-Ray. I was surprised by how many microscopic things I noticed when I impartial sat succor and let it all soak in - wood grains, dandelions in a field, pebbles on the ground. Dusky levels are rock solid, color is very naturalistic and stable. Overall it’s impartial a tall job by the MGM studio and Lowry Digital to not overdo it and let the natural film elements stand on their enjoy merits. So many times studios feel the need to over-enhance their older films to have them “compete” with newer releases, which usually fair ends up introducing unique video noise, or ends up washing out right detail in the image (”Dusky City” and its waxen faces springs to mind.) “Goldfinger,” by not going overboard, sets the bar very high for a catalog film restoration.

Special features also shine - several HD documentaries, a commentary with the cast and crew (including Connery), and some recent period promotional pieces round out a really great package of extras.

*********

For any Bond aficionado with a valid HD setup, this is a no-brainer. This is blooming grand the best Bond film of its era (although I am quite partial to “From Russia With Savor,” as well) . The disc is a certain upgrade over a DVD. Action film fans and fans of 60’s era thrillers will catch a kick out of this, too.

I recommend buying “Dr. No,” “From Russia,” and “Goldfinger” on Blu-Ray. These three films will give you pure 60’s Bond without any of the silliness of the later stuff. You can end there, or maybe occupy up the two latest flicks, too, as they are gargantuan Blu-Ray presentations also.

This was the first Bond film with the tricked-out look car (the classic Aston Martin DB-5, the best of all the Bond cars), the gadgets and other stuff that came to elaborate the series. In my mind, Connery is the best Bond, Goldfinger is the best villian, Oddjob is the best henchman, “Goldfinger” is the best theme song and this is the best Bond film. It looks & sounds awesome in blu-ray.

The Scooby-Doo movies of unusual years have been generally warmly welcomed in our household. They tend to be of two schools: 1) more comic than serious, outrageous on mystery, and catering to a young audience (Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School or Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf advance to mind) and 2) more serious than funny, emphasizing mystery, and catering to an older audience (Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island or Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders reach to mind) . My wife and I bask in Scooby-Doo and stare it with our children, but we try to end away from the sillier films. This movie, Scooby-Doo and the Monster of Mexico, looked to be of the more serious variety, so we bought it. Here are my thoughts:

The Animation: The first thing I noticed was that the movie opens with some nice animation eye-candy. (Generally, key scenes seem to open with some startling visual, such as rippling water or flickering flames.) I view the quasi-3D animation was a nice change from that seen on some of the previous Scooby-Doo movies.

The Plot: It is a more serious film: Fred’s friends from Mexico are being unnerved by a monster of local account prior to the Day of the Tedious. Is the monster accurate or the fabrication of criminal minds? What differentiates this from the standard Scooby-Doo set is the emphasis on the Mexican culture. Local customs (i.e. Day of the Tedious) are introduced and explained. The folks in the Mexican village are treated respectfully. The gang and the audience learn some Spanish. This intimacy with the culture makes the monster’s threat more essential. You do care what happens to Fred’s friends and their neighbors. Initially, the set seemed rather weak: the first half of the film deals with tracking a monster and the second half deals with the mystery. I wanted more mystery, but it seemed to acquire the gang a long time to realize that some detective work was required. Upon reflection, I peep that the pacing was deliberate to allow the locals to contribute significantly to the gang’s detective work; it’s a group concern.

The Problem: I enjoyed this movie until the obligatory waddle scene, which grew increasingly astonishing. I notion I had the mystery all figured out–I was disappointed that I was plan ahead of Velma so soon–and then found myself confused by the queer events occurring during the slide. Although all is explained later–and more satisfactorily than in Epic of the Vampire–I understanding it was too over-the-top. It didn’t abet that the accompanying song grew rather plain. Also, it made the movie feel too long.

Overall: I enjoyed this movie, especially its respect for Mexican culture and the Mexican characters, which, not being dumbed down, reacted normally toward some of the unusual events, especially approach the waste. I abominate the obligatory crawl scene, but I realize that this is for the young audience (my son loved this section) . I would have preferred more mystery, but it does play out rather naturally. Considering the reactions of both myself and my children, I recommend this latest installment in the Scooby-Doo movie series. Although it has its flaws, I believe it makes for a fair righteous time. Adults will like it, and kids will probably treasure it.

Upon first viewing of this recent movie with my five-year-old son, I was prepared to converse it as somewhat disappointing and meandering.

But when the credits rolled, my son looked at me with a substantial smile and declared, “That was the best Scooby-Doo ever!”

So, what do I know? I bow to his critique and award this movie a elephantine five stars.
